  1. I am hard to please. If guys are supposed to be among the best in baseball mere “quality starts” of giving up 2 or 3 runs in 6 innings are not that impressive to me. With an offense like the Brewers have that often isn’t enough to win.
  2. I’d like to see them pitch 6 or 7 scoreless innings once in awhile because that’s what it often takes to win with this team. We’ll have to wait for another day to see that as Woodruff looks like he’s headed for another 5 inning outing like his last one.
  3. One batter and Woodruff already looks to be headed for a short start.
  4. We’re going to have to hope for one of the Brewers supposed aces to outduel Steele to have a chance today. Steele does have the advantage of facing a weaker lineup.
  5. And Brosseau looks at strike three and strike four.
  6. Actually they are fighting for the second and third wild card spots along with the Padres and Phillies. Whichever of the Braves and Mets doesn’t win their division is pretty comfortably in control of the first one. The Brewers controlling their own destiny is a mixed blessing. Because they are losing more games than they are winning it might be better to be ahead in the win column and hope the other teams lose.
  7. The Brewers have managed the seemingly unimaginable collapse of going from 4 games ahead of the Cardinals to 5 games behind them during a stretch of 3 weeks that included half of the 18 games against the Red Sox, Pirates, Reds, and Cubs. They have to turn things around soon to stay in the playoff hunt because the Padres lineup figures to come around eventually.
  8. Maybe he wants the flexibility to watch his sons play.
  9. I pulled together some numbers this morning that show how the Brewers run scoring totals relative to the other NL playoff contenders are inflated by: 1. Playing so many games against the 5 most generous teams in the league (Nats, Pirates, Reds, Cubs, and Rockies), and 2. Padding their run totals against those teams (especially early in the season) even though their aggregate won-loss percentage against those teams is significantly worse than any of the other contenders. Those big double digit run games pad the numbers while only accounting for one win or, in the case of one game against the Reds, one loss. I could go into more detail, but I don’t have the stomach for it today when it should be obvious to the most optimistic fans that this team is leaking oil badly, especially on offense.
  10. Since Memorial Day the Cubs are 33-38 to the Brewers 31-38 and have beaten the Brewers 6 of 7 times. So, there’s a pretty good argument that they are a better team right now. Or maybe a slightly less inept team.
  11. That 10th inning could be used as Exhibit A to demonstrate the Brewers futility. First, failing to add on with runners on 1st and 2nd, started by Yelich trying to pull the 3-1 pitch then striking out. Second, allowing Happ a free stroll to third, to set up, Third, Yelich letting a ball drop out of his hands to allow Happ to waltz home with the tying run.
  12. Can’t say I have confidence in Rogers here given his tendency to bounce balls at or into the feet of right handed hitters.
  13. I can’t believe he’s letting Williams pitch to another batter.
  14. Williams is on fumes now. Madrigal has been hot this series.
  15. OK. Now up,to the revamped bullpen to bring it home.
  16. Three of the wins have been in extra innings, meaning runs scored with the aid of a free runner on second.
  17. Not just the batting average but the low number of baserunners and runners in scoring position. I quickly counted 66 hits in the last 11 games. No wonder the majority of their runs have to come on HRs.
  18. It was the statement that it would be terribly disappointing to miss the playoffs for a record fifth straight year. Taken literally and out of context it could have sounded like it would be disappointing to miss the playoffs for 5 years in a row,
  19. Any starting pitcher with a pulse can shut this offense down.
  20. Lucky to squeeze a run out of what started as a promising inning. Cubs flubbed what should have been an easy DP.
  21. Looking at the radar I think they will be able to get the game in today, though there might be a delay at some point.
  22. I think his point is that the Brewers have been in the playoffs the last 4 years and came into the season with high expectations for making it 5 in a row. It would be disappointing if they miss out on a golden opportunity to make it 5 playoff appearances in a row, in large part because of underperforming against the worst teams in the league.
