  1. Only a misplay prevented complaints about the contact play.
  2. This time it took two misplays for the Brewers to score. The first run was an error and a fly ball misplayed into a double.
  3. Unearned runs created by opponent errors shouldn’t be counted against you.
  4. Today’s game will determine whether this homestand will be a minor disappointment or another step backward. Winning 4 of 6 at home against these teams is not a way to gain ground against playoff contenders. Going 3-3 at this stage of the season and given the Brewers position is a failure.
  5. The Diamondbacks are breaking out the whooping sticks on the Phillies again after scoring 13 unanswered runs on them last night. They’re warming up for the Brewers’ visit this weekend.
  6. Maybe it’s because there isn’t one reliable reliever in the bullpen these days. So, if you need 3 or 4 of them to be perfect to scratch out a win the odds are against you.
  7. 4 runs in 4.2 innings in that one which came the next week, so they saw him in consecutive starts.
  8. Yes. 1 run in 5.1 innings in a game in April that the Brewers ended I winning 4-2.
  9. Also 6 of his 11 HR and 15 of his 34 This is his 12th game against the Brewers. He’s had 43 against everyone else.
  10. That will change soon as the Pirates have a series with the Cardinals coming up. The Pirates also play the Cardinals for the last 6 games of the season, though those games may be meaningless.
  11. Cruz has hit 6 of his 11 HRs against the Brewers (55%). That’s roughly equal to the percentage of the Pirates wins since June 30 that have come against the Brewers.
  12. I stand corrected. I was probably so irked after the second HR that I probably tuned out and didn’t care whether they left him in or not. Regardless, that is 3 straight less than quality starts from Burnes. They need more than that from an ace, both in terms of covering innings and preventing runs. Those subpar outings put more strain on the bullpen and potentially impact other games. Having to use Suter last night with Alexander starting tonight is a perfect example. Burnes quality start percentage, IP per start , and ERA this season are not up to the standards I would expect from an elite SP. it’s definitely what the Brewers need considering that they rely so heavily on elite pitching.
  13. Usually it’s 3-4 days of playing shorthanded then they put the player on the IL. The fly in the ointment of the wins the last two days is that the short start from Lauer on Sunday, Burnes not making it through even 6 yesterday, and some hiccups from the bullpen on Sunday have put more strain on the bullpen than necessary. In the middle of this stretch of 18 games in 17 days with no off days, some pitchers have to be more efficient.
  14. I don’t think the game threads have changed significantly in the last couple of years. Do they just seem different to you because you didn’t participate in them until this year?
  15. Having an easy schedule on paper doesn’t mean squat when you can’t win games against a team that can’t beat anyone else.
  16. My guess is that we’ll be seeing the Pirates start a RHP tonight but switch to a LHP quickly. The Brewers really need to put up some early runs, get out to a lead, add on, have Burnes go 6 or 7 innings, and give the bullpen a break.
  17. You have to factor in that this was already an especially stressful time in his personal life. It’s possible that adding to that stress by forcing him to move and deal with the pressure of performing for a new team affected him.
  18. The only way I see Counsell not being the Brewers manager next season is if he decides that after 9 years he wants to take a break from the daily grind to have more time following his sons in their evolving baseball careers and being with the rest of his family. He’s young enough that he could take some time off and have no trouble getting another manager job in a few years.
  19. That first paragraph is totally inaccurate and uncalled for, but par for the course for you. I’m not sure how many “positive Cardinal updates” you think I’ve posted. You must be including my comments that they helped themselves at the deadline when they picked up Montgomery and Quintana. That conflicted with your take that they didn’t do much and needed to pick up a higher end starter. I hate the Cardinals as much as anyone, and that should be obvious from my posts. Then you proceed to agree with the substance of what I said.
  20. The Cardinals were the winners of the weekend by getting through a series with the Braves without losing ground to anyone. Their next 20 games are all against the Reds, Pirates, Nats, and Cubs, except for 2 home games against the Brewers, 14 of those 20 games are at home. The Brewers are going to have a hard time gaining ground on them.
  21. Hader getting shelled by the Royals turning a 9-6 deficit to 12-6 and he hasn’t retired a batter. Barring a major comeback by the Padres the weekend will be a stalemate in the wild card chase.
