  1. The Brewers offense seems to be the panacea for anybody’s bullpen. They managed 3 hits in 5.1 innings against the Cubs pen today, and I think only one of the hits left the infield. A rainout seems like a real possibility for tomorrow. A doubleheader Sunday before the trip to LA is not ideal.
  2. According to both Fangraphs and 538 the Brewers chances of winning the division are sinking like a stone. They both put it at about 24% with about a 30% chance of getting a wild card berth.
  3. The only wind that inning was the Brewers hitter flailing hopelessly at pitches in the dirt. Maybe they would have better luck just making some contact and hoping for some of those weak hits that are treated with such scorn here.
  4. But 8 might. Though the dregs of the Brewers bullpen isn’t likely to keep the Cubs there.
  5. 2018 is not a good example. That year the Brewers were 13-6 against the last place Reds and 7-12 (including an obligatory disaster in Pittsburgh) against the Pirates, who finished over .500 for the season and don’t really compare to the tanking teams of 2022. Against the other last place teams in the NL that year (the Padres and Marlins) the Brewers were a combined 9-4, so their record against the 3 last place teams was 22-10 (.688). The Brewers were given a gift this year being in a division with 3 of the 4 weakest teams in the NL. They haven’t taken advantage of that gift, and it’s only the high number of games against those weak teams that has kept them in the watered down playoff race.
  6. Yes. Contending teams will do that routinely. A .560 winning percentage for the whole season gets you to 90 wins, which is about what it usually takes to make the playoffs. The usual way to get to those 90 wins is to play .500 or maybe a little better against the good teams and pile up wins against the bad ones. If you look at the numbers I posted above the other NL playoff contenders are all winning at a much higher rate against these weak teams. The Brewers did it last year, going a combined 29-9 against the Cubs and Pirates. Those 38 games right there accounted for 20 of the 28 games they finished over .500. In their other 124 games they were 66-58 (.532).
  7. I think part of that is related to an agreement the Cubs made as a condition to putting lights in at Wrigley Field. There was some pushback from the city because of disruptions to the neighborhood created by night games. So, the number of night games is limited.
  8. On one Ashby didn’t get to first quick enough. Another was hit up the middle and Adames made a diving stop to technically make it an infield hit. One was a swinging bunt, the kind of hit you can get occasionally if you don’t strike out.
  9. To put this into perspective, here’s how the Brewers 26-21 record against the Pirates, Cubs, Reds, and Nats compares to the rest of the NL playoff contenders: Cardinals 24-11 (they have a lot more games remaining against those teams than the Brewers; that’s going to make it hard for the Brewers to get help down the stretch. They have to start winning well over half their games to keep pace and catch up. Dodgers 16-8. Despite the incongruous 1-5 record against the Pirates, they made up for it by going 7-0 against both the Cubs and Reds. When you’re cruising to a division title and best record in the league like they are, you can afford to take a series off once in awhile. The Brewers don’t have that luxury. Phillies. 16-5 Mets 18-5 Braves 21-9 Padres 17-5. So, yeah, the Brewers’ failure to dominate the bottom feeders like they did last year may be what keeps them out of the playoffs this year.
  10. 23-18 against those teams is not good enough for a team that wants to make the playoffs. Throw in 3-3 against the Nationals and they are losing significant ground against other playoff contenders.
  11. It isn’t just the 1 out, it’s the 3 runs. I don’t think it’s asking too much from an ace Cy Young pitcher to deliver more than a “good job”. If the best we can hope for from Burnes is 3 runs in 5+ innings that isn’t going to be good enough against the best teams with their best pitchers on the mound. The Brewers were able to put 5 runs on the board against Heaney, who likely won’t be in the Dodgers playoff starting rotation. They likely won’t be scoring 5 runs against the kind of starters they would be seeing in the playoffs.
  12. With the wind blowing out it’s going to take a lot of runs to win today, Giving away outs is a sure fire way to lose. This is where Burnes failure to get through 6 or 7 innings yesterday is going to hurt. The bullpen is going to be covering a lot of innings.
  13. Burnes giving up 3 runs (would have been 4 if Taylor hadn’t pulled Lux’s drive back into the park) and failing to get out of the sixth inning was the one disappointment in that game. With a 5 run lead it would have been helpful for him to get through 7 innings. Boxberger, Rogers, Bush, and Williams were all available to finish the game, but being forced to use them all yesterday could have an impact today or tomorrow depending on how those games go. During this stretch of 30 games in 30 days with just one off day it will be difficult for the Brewers to stack up the wins they need if they have to use 5 pitchers to get every win. The ace pitchers covering more innings would be a big help.
  14. In my case I was away from home all afternoon. That was a big win for the Brewers to get a split in the series and mitigate the ground lost while the Cardinals swept the Rockies. It figures to be a frustrating stretch of scoreboard watching as the Cardinals catch up on their games played against the league bottom feeders. They do have a tougher assignment this weekend against the competitive DBacks. The Brewers could really use a series sweep, something they haven’t done in a 3 game series for quite awhile. I think their last two 3 game sweeps were against the Reds, one about 2 months ago and the other in early May.
  15. I’m not saying the Brewers necessarily have a lot of losses left. I’m just pointing out the reality that the Brewers haven’t been beating up on even the bad teams recently and haven’t shown any signs of emerging from the mediocrity of the last 3 1/2 months. Its hard for me to get too excited about losing games close when the common thread is scoring a run or two on four or five hits virtually every day without the benefit of free runners in extra innings. I still have hope that the Brewers can make the playoffs and maybe even progress in them. But my expectation is significantly lower.
  16. True, but the Cubs are also leading the season series head to head against the Brewers. So there is no reason to expect that the two series against them the next two weekends will be easy.
  17. When you’re 81-35 you can afford to be patient with a veteran player. Come playoff time I trust Roberts to use the best pitchers available and not be tied to Kimbrel as a closer.
  18. I didn’t think that was going to score two. Renfroe really read that well.
  19. Caratini has to get the ball in the air. Anything on the ground is a game ending DP.
  20. Yeah, it is a bad idea to walk Muncy here. He’s a K candidate.
  21. At least Rowdy won’t be the runner in the 11th.
  22. I think “bar none one of the worst” is an oxymoron.
  23. Lamet is pitching for the Rockies in the last of the 9th in a tie game with the Cardinals.
