  1. How many times tonight have we heard “grounded into the shift”?
  2. It also tells me that that formula can’t hold up when the pitching drops off as it has this season. Last year the Brewers had the good fortune of not having significant injuries to the pitching staff so they only had a small handful of games started by anyone other than their 6 regular starters, and all of those starters were between outstanding and effective. They also had better offense for parts of the season and were able to win 51 games without saves, giving the back end of the bullpen some breathers.
  3. The teams seem to be warming up for a quick getaway game tomorrow so they can head off for their break.
  4. It is not true that every team has a stretch of over 2 months playing under .500.
  5. That was the last inning I saw before going to bed. It took some help from the Giants defense to get those runs. I was looking at something today that I think says something about how the Brewers offense puts pressure on the pitching staff. The Brewers lead the NL with 35 saves, so they’ve only won 15 games without a save. Those are either walkoff wins, or games with no save situation because of having a large enough lead late in the game. I looked at the other NL playoff contenders and the Brewers 15 no save wins are by far the lowest. For comparison, the Dodgers have 33, the Mets 31, Cardinals 27, Giants 26, Phillies 25, Braves 22, and Padres 21.
  6. Cobb should be able to go 11 tonight. 2 hits for the Brewers in their last 8 innings.
  7. No, I meant the different areas of the team: starting pitching, relief pitching, and hitting. I could throw in fielding too. The Brewers formula for success is (1) exceptional starting pitching, (2) Lockdown bullpen in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings, and (3) enough offense to win when pieces 1 and 2 do their jobs. The starting pitching has been weaker than expected due to injuries and under performance. The depth of the bullpen has been affected by injuries, and, in addition to Hader’s recent problems, Boxberger has had a couple of rough outings recently. The middle of the bullpen has often let small deficits turn into bigger ones and is being called on to cover a lot of innings because the starters aren’t going deep into games. The offense has been prone to droughts that turn winnable games into losses even with excellent pitching. Some times you have to be able to win a game 8-6, and the Brewers haven’t had many of those.
  8. That can be fine, but the what about getting to the ninth with a lead? The Brewers formula for success has always been fragile and each piece of that formula is having problems. Hader’s meltdown is obviously the main story last night, but for all we’re hearing about the lack of depth in the Giants pitching staff, things might have been different if the offense could have done something in the last 4 innings off of a beleaguered bullpen. That same failure cost some wins against the Pirates and Cubs too.
  9. I’m trying to get some comfort from the fact that Hader’s worst stretch last year came right before the All Star break. Maybe he just needs a reset. But, I think it’s safe to say that this bad stretch is the worst and longest of his career. Even a couple of his saves have been shaky. If he can’t return to form the Brewers chances of making the playoffs, much less doing anything in them, take a huge hit.
  10. Glad I didn’t stay up to watch that. I probably wouldn’t have been able to go to sleep if I had. I stayed up long enough to see the five runs the Brewers were largely gifted in the fifth and hoped that would be enough. The reference to Hader’s problems coinciding with his family situation made me think of the episode “The Mighty Casey” from The Twilight Zone.
  11. Easy decision going to bed early tonight. If the Brewers make a game of it it won’t be over until 1 AM at this pace.
  12. Nice to get up in the morning and see that the Brewers were able to nurse the free runner across the plate in the 10th without getting the ball out of the infield. It would have hurt to waste another great outing from Burnes, especially with all of the scoring opportunities squandered early in the game.
  13. The internet service is fine. I can watch it on my iPad through the spectrum app but on the TV through the cable box it freezes. I went through my Roku device, added the Bally Sports app, went through the activation steps, and signed in through my Spectrum credentials and that worked. Like on the Spectrum app it’s a couple of pitches behind but at least it’s on the big screen (just in time for me to retire for the night). But this will be a good backup if this continues through the series as it often seems to once this starts. Thanks for the tip.
  14. Maybe the Brewers can bring in a baserunner with Rodon out.
  15. I raised this question yesterday and nobody responded. I thought maybe one of the stat gurus here would have that at their fingertips. I’d be really surprised if the Brewers weren’t near the top of this list because they are middle of the road at putting runners on base but near the top in HRs. I heard the Braves announcers talking about how high their percentage has been.
  16. Perfect example of why this isn’t a good park for teams that rely heavily on HRs to score.
  17. My mistake. With the frozen screens on the TV coverage it’s hard to keep track of what’s going on.
  18. Severino is costing the Brewers a run a game because he can’t catch.
  19. The Brewers have a better chance of getting a run on a solo HR. Bases loaded and nobody out is not their thing.
  20. I can get it on the Spectrum app without the constant freezing, but it’s about a minute behind.
  21. Burnes is on my opponent’s fantasy team this week so I expect him to pitch 8 shutout innings.
  22. Now the Brewers get to move on to face one of the top LHP in the NL in a park that isn’t homer friendly and with the back end of the bullpen likely unavailable. Burnes is going to have his work cut out for him. 6 or 7 shutout innings might not be enough, just like it wasn’t in his last start.
  23. What’s with all of the complaining from the Twins fans about their bullpen? They’ve looked pretty solid in these two games. 7.2 innings with just one unearned run,
