  1. Is Suter going to be released?
  2. If Benintendi can play CF decently, that would be the only way acquiring him would make sense to me. Otherwise he’d be replacing Yelich, Mc Cutchen or Renfroe and that wouldn’t seem like enough of an upgrade to the offense to make it worth giving up much for him. It would give them more depth in the OF to cover days off and injuries.
  3. Who would Benintendi replace in the everyday lineup if everyone is healthy?
  4. A good opportunity this weekend for the Brewers to start to reverse the mediocrity of the last two months. It’s going to take better performances and/or some deadline roster improvements to get the Brewers into the playoffs. This article on mlb.com is not real bullish on the Brewers: https://www.mlb.com/news/midterm-report-2022-for-every-team?partnerId=zh-20220721-656768-mlb-1-A&qid=1026&utm_id=zh-20220721-656768-mlb-1-A&bt_ee=9EPIxTpEgQuU9TuCWmDwKKlmff0R5K3KnBupQi7WczU%3D&bt_ts=1658413359124
  5. I don’t know what stats anyone would want to use to put an objective measure to it, but how would we compare the performance of the Brewers infield to the infields of the other NL playoff contenders? Position by position, I don’t think it would stack up very well, especially against the top teams (Dodgers, Mets, and Braves) and the Cardinals
  6. I’m not going to quibble about specific grades because they are so subjective and depend so much on what the baseline is. You say that you based these on what could reasonably be expected from a player, and that’s fine. Presumably if you based the grade on a league average, or what a playoff contending team should be striving to get from that position, the grades would be different. If you expect a player to be average for his position, and his actual performance is average, that would be a C in my book. And that would leave the Brewers with a lot of C’s. The Brewers being in the top half of the league in most offensive categories is great if your goal is to have an average team or if you expect the pitching to be so exceptional that it can lift an average offensive team to one of the top playoff positions. The comments about the “offense is so bad” narrative seem to miss what that “narrative” really is. The offense was a question mark coming into the season and it’s hard to identify many players who have exceeded their expectations. And the troubling thing is that the offense has been progressively slipping as the season has progressed. If the performance in the games following the 19 run outburst in Pittsburgh are a sign of things to come, the Brewers have a real problem.
  7. The schedule in the next 5 series is about as “favorable” as the last 5 series against the Pirates (twice), Cubs, Twins, and Giants, and the Brewers went 8-10 in those games. The Giants weren’t exactly lighting the world on fire either, but the Brewers got them straightened out. After a steady diet of Blue Jays, Rays, and Yankees the Red Sox will be looking at the Brewers as a break in their schedule. The Brewers had better get themselves straightened out in the next 5 series because the next 5 after that (Rays, @Cards, Dodgers, @Cubs, and @Dodgers) are going to be a stern test. It’s a pretty safe bet that Peralta and Houser won’t be back for any of these games so the Brewers are going to have to find a way to win without them. The performances that we’ve seen for the last two months from the pitching, hitting, and fielding aren’t going to get it done.
  8. I think the lockout and pandemic have something to do with it. The Brewers get a lot of attendance from groups that schedule outings, mainly during the summer months, and last year and this year there was uncertainty about whether games would be played. I also wonder if there are more people like us who have lost some enthusiasm for attending games in person because the pace is so slow and there is so little action. It was a lot different 40 years ago when the average game was about 40 minutes shorter than it is now.
  9. I wouldn’t say I’m worried yet but it is a little puzzling that they gave him a couple of extra days before his start against the Giants, possibly to set him up to pitch in the ASG. Hopefully it’s just a decision that he needs a break from pitching for a few days and will be ready to go next weekend.
  10. Add the Giants to the list of wild card contenders who have wrapped up their season series against the Brewers.
  11. I think Arenado would have made that play on the catcher.
  12. Burnes out of the ASG. That doesn’t sound good.
  13. Looks like the Brewers aren’t going to have 3 straight heartbreaking losses.
  14. Brewers might have gotten a break on that call at third. A safe call probably wouldn’t have been overturned.
  15. Because the Brewers are loaded with average hitters in their lineup, and true impact bats are hard to come by, it’s going to be hard for them to make significant improvements there. There probably will be third and fourth starting pitchers available and picking up someone like that could significantly prop up the Cardinals rotation. I also think the Cardinals have more resources to go after a higher end pitcher than the Brewers have to chase a real impact bat. If there were someone like Max Scherzer available this year I could see the Cards making a strong run for him. My expectation is that the Cardinals will be able to do more to improve themselves at the deadline than the Brewers, whose main hope is for Peralta to come back and be effective and some current hitters to start producing more. We’ll be finding out soon.
  16. I have no doubt that they will be picking up some pitching. It just remains to be seen who it will be.
  17. The Brewers have scored one run in this series that wasn’t aided by Giants mistakes or a free runner on 2B.
  18. Another dreary defeat in what’s becoming a long line of them. Webb vs Alexander isn’t the matchup you want to try to right the ship.
  19. He’s been HR or nothing for about a month, and for the last few weeks it’s been nothing.
  20. Apparently Counsell is trying to avoid the left handed pinch hitters on the Giants bench.
  21. Davis might be out. Looks like the fielder had his glove between his foot and the bag after his hand came off. That would have ticked me off if they had overturned that. I don’t trust the replay system.
  22. I hold my breath every time he tries to run hard. A guy who has had calf and hamstring injuries is always one step away from another one.
