    Speaking of good pitching performances, regardless of the final outcome it looks like Max Lazar had quite the opener.

    Brown now is tied for third in the Southern League in ERA, first in WHIP, third in strikeouts and has a strikeout to walk rate of 4:1. Great night in a really impressive season.

    That Carolina pitching staff might not be the Brewers' best, but it might be the most bizarrely compelling from a prospect watching standpoint, between the guys with some upside seeking improved control (Webb, Diplan, Harber) the former high picks coming back from injury (Williams, Kirby) and Cam Roegner's big season.

    I'd seen Carmona and a few others, but where did you see that about Sibrian? Looking at those, two things come to mind 1. The starting infields and the Arizona outfield look pretty intriguing. 2. Outside of the Helena infield (with Carmona moving up to Helena and Familia sliding into that spot in Arizona), there is precious little depth, especially given that it is quite possible the Brewers sign no 4-year college infielders or outfielders from their draft. You're right about the undrafted free agents likely being needed.

    I don't know how he projects at that size, but man, give him credit, sub-2.00 ERA and one of the team's best hitters. He's one heck of a college player.

    I wonder if this is the longest the Brewers have gone without taking a college junior. If form holds from last year, maybe half of the guys 11-20 will sign, but you can't say they aren't placing a focus on upside.

    Really, the only thing that has changed for Brown is that he has kept the ball in the park better. A lot of his stats through those first five starts were pretty good, he just had given up six home runs. He has given up one since, and his ERA has caught up with his WHIP, K/9 and K/BB. Nice to see him being probably one of the top five pitchers in the Southern League thus far.

    It seems as if the Brewers have been ready to accept more risk in their search for pitching upside in the draft rather than using a high pick. They've gone with guys with injury issues (Kirby, Webb), disappointing college stats (Zack Brown, Hanhold), lower than usual floors even by high school pitcher standards (Walters, Lemons). I will say, if they push these guys next season, outside of catcher they could have a very young Wisconsin lineup with Wilson Martinez, Carmona, Turing, McClanahan (I guess the old man of the group), Ward, Gray and Bello, and some combination of Pinero, Egnatuk, Coca, Familia, Lujano, Castillo and Abreu backing them up. While it is probably unrealistic and would be entirely dependent on the draft board, you could make a case for spending the next 17 picks on pitchers and catchers. I wonder if they go with a catcher like Tyler Cropley for the usual eighth or ninth round position player senior sign.

    Part of the issue for Gatewood is that it takes a fair amount for a first baseman to make those lists. MLB.com had three on its one, and while I'm guessing Pavin Smith and a couple of the other ones who made their top 10 first basemen are likely falling, McKay and Bauers likely aren't, and at this point would you really put Gatewood ahead of Alonso or Naylor? May has been great, but given that he is a right-handed first baseman who hasn't posted an .800+ OPS outside of Helena, he probably needs to post something like a .270/.350/.530, 30 home run type season to have a shot at the postseason lists.

    There are a number of things that are going to be really interesting in the next poll. Does the value that the Brewers' bullpen has supplied this year lead to increased support for relievers (Torres-Costa) or projected relievers (Houser)? Are people buying Ray's improved production? Gatewood's power surge? What about the guys who were showing improvements before injuries? Am I going to be the only one putting Zack Brown in the top 10? On a lower note, with Hiura's promotion and Neuhaus' recent struggles, how many position players from Carolina will get votes? You can make a good case that a 24-year-old repeating the level who needed a recent hot streak to get his OPS above .700 is now the team's best position player prospect. Same question, given the struggles of Carlos Herrera and recent downturn of Bowden Francis, about the Wisconsin pitching staff?

    I still have a feeling that Brinson isn't a complete washout, but it is looking more and more like it might be a scenario where he has a long and occasionally productive career that always just seems disappointing given his former prospect status and having been the centerpiece in a significant trade. So, you know, Cameron Maybin.

    His OBP is up to .400 for May with 16 walks to 19 strikeouts. I don't know if it is sustainable, but if it is, suddenly he is looking like a guy who deserved to go No. 5 in the draft.

    If you want to feel better about Hiura's hitting thus far, look at the other college bats from last year's first round who are in A+. Relative to league only Brian Miller is even close. The Virginia duo are both struggling to sub-.700 OPSs.

    The irony of this is, wasn't the concern when he came over that he had had reverse splits his last four or so minor league seasons and thus wasn't an ideal platoon partner for Thames?

    If you're buying into Ray's early season production this year, then I think you could at least make a case for Nottingham under a similar production finally matching hype, premium position argument, but that's neither here nor there. As for Ray, the track record of college first rounders who have the type of season that he had last year is pretty depressing, but he does fit the type who I could see breaking the trend. He always felt kind of halfway between the advanced college bats and the toolsy prep outfielders in that he had progressed enough in college to remove some of the early flameout risk of the prep guys but not enough to suggest smooth sailing through the minors like Benintendi or Senzel. Because of that, I also find myself more ready to shed the skepticism last year brought if he puts together a quality season this year, especially given that he isn't repeating a level.

    I wonder what the odds would have been on Orf and Segovia homering on the same day. Also, here's hoping Henry can keep this pace up.

    The home runs have really been the only thing holding Brown back from being one of the top 3-5 pitchers in the Southern League this year. He's among the the league leaders in a number of categories, and I believe he is the only one to have a WHIP of better than 1.20 (1.06), a K/9 of better than 9 (9.53) and a K/BB of better than 3 (4.67). It's just those six home runs. If he can more consistently keep the ball in the ballpark the rest of the way, he's on his way to a really good season.

    I've got a feeling the offense rebounds a bit. You've got a few very talented guys really struggling. That being said, as weird as this is to say, I've been pleasantly surprised by the pitching staff. Look at it this way, at the start of the season, they had one guy who was on any prospect lists, Herrera, and he is clearly not fully stretched out. You also are coming off a draft in which you picked two four-year college pitchers in the first 20 rounds and one of those is out with an injury. The previous year I believe you only signed two high school pitchers and one of them missed the following year with injury and the other has been cut. And the DSL guys on the roster really had a total of one above-average year between them. This truly had the potential to be even worse than it is. Francis has looked good thus far. If he or even someone like Peterson becomes a solid prospect and Herrera and Pennington pitch well, the Brewers will have emerged ahead of the game, prospect-wise, even if the staff as a whole posts pretty dreadful numbers.

    I know it's early, but I'll take nine starters with 1.20 WHIP or below and a 10th (Burnes) who is close enough to be included with a CS discount. And of those nine, I think only Woodruff isn't averaging at least 8 K/9. And back on the topic of Francis, that 0 under walks for the season looks nice, too.

    I'm quickly becoming very intrigued by Francis. On a staff that isn't filled with touted prospects, he's becoming one to watch.

    It's nice to see Clark getting off to a good start, even if is is just a few at-bats. He is one of two guys on that Wisconsin roster (with the other being Francis) who I could see going from no votes in the preseason prospect poll to legitimate Top 25 contender with a good first half. He's kind of in the same boat as Orimoloye, in that man, if everything starts to click ...

    Nice to see Roegner's great start. Rare I get to cheer for someone from my alma mater. Go BU! Hopefully Webb can make it 5-for-5 on nice starts from the 2016 college pitching group. Combined Burnes, Z. Brown, Jankins and Roegner have a 1.29 ERA (they are a Zack Brown balk away from having a combined ERA below 1), .96 WHIP, 9.38 K/9, and 6.25 K/BB. Obviously it is just one start each, but that's the way to start a season.

    Solid if not terribly efficient first AA start for Brown (who weirdly got called for twice as many balks in this game as first first two seasons combined). Nice to see the K/BB ratio. Also nice to see the three Ks from Ramirez. That was really the one part of his stat line last year that was lacking.

    An interesting thing is that Davis was listed in the numerical section of the initial roster (No. 17).
