  1. I disagree with that. Putting him on the 40-man is a pretty clear indication that they're trying to shelter him from any further consequences. If they do continue to test him, it's probably just so they can find out before the league finds out.
  2. As far as I'm concerned, adding Jeffress to the 40-man roster was borderline unethical. I'm not sure if any other prospect has ever been in the same situation and Melvin just set the precedent that as long as you're talented, lifetime bans will never be enforced. They're just for show. I think the timing also leads to speculation. Melvin could have added Jeffress to the 40-man in April, but didn't. That he added him now with only three months to go suggests to me that Melvin had good reason to think he wouldn't stay clean.
  3. If the time comes to move Gamel to 1B, he can learn that on the fly at the Major League level if necessary. Every decent 3B in baseball can handle 1B just fine without needing months of practice. And Weeks is injury prone and nearing the end of his contract, so I don't think we should move Lawrie off 2B unless he is truly as terrible as some scouts have reported.
  4. I think this move has been coming for a long time and was pretty much inevitable. Let's face it, Jeffress has never shown the command to be a successful starter. Let him focus on two pitches. Instead of several years of inconsistent and mediocre results in the rotation, we can potentially get a dominant late inning reliever.
  5. The Bucs could be a good offensive team in the very near future but they still have a long way to go pitching-wise. Taillon and Allie sound awesome, but they're years away, of course.
  6. I just watched Allie's MLB Draft video and I can see why people are excited about him. Powerful drop-and-drive delivery with no obvious mechanical issues. The ball explodes out of his hand. I also watched Harvey's video and... blah. Seems to cut off his delivery before he's finished and his fastball didn't have much life. Biddle has a decent delivery but it doesn't sound like he has the stuff to go 14th overall. I like Allie way better than the other two, but that's based solely on the tiny sample in the scouting videos.
  7. Smith's main obstacle right now is simply that he's not on the 40-man roster. With Gamel and Riske due to come off the 60-day DL soon, that probably won't change for a while, either.
  8. The other big difference between Salome and Jeffress is that Salome has performed well when he's been on the field and Jeffress has not. Even if you take away the drug concerns, Jeffress is a thrower with no command. In his best season he walked 4.5 batters per nine innings. He obviously has great stuff, but the performance is a long way from the potential and he's failed at both attempts to crack AA so far.
  9. I ran through the game log and 8 of the 11 hits were ground balls, with three of those being infield hits. The other three hits were "fly balls," which I take to mean bloops. No extra base hits and no line drive hits. Sounds like he could have fared much better, but that's a sign of a good pitcher when luck seems to be going against him and he still gets decent results.
  10. I get the service time argument, but I really don't think the super 2 argument makes any sense. We're talking about a relief pitcher here, and probably a middle relief pitcher for a while. It's not like he's going to be making Ryan Howard money in arbitration. I don't think the financial implications will or should play any part in the decision to bring him up.
  11. It's not like Macha has to green light a plunking. Bush is going to hit guys no matter what Macha says, so he might as well make one count tonight.
  12. I don't think Hanson hit Braun intentionally, but I agree that the pickoff attempts were essentially kicking him while he was down. I usually think that retaliation is a bad idea, but in this case, we really needed to send a message that you can't be hitting our players with 96 mph fastballs. The best chance would have been the next half inning when the number 8 hitter led off for Atlanta. Unfortunately, Davis walked him, which put Hanson in a bunting situation. And you can't plunk a guy when he's trying to give you an out in a close game. When Davis did end up hitting McCann, it was on a breaking ball. There was clearly no intent. I don't think it's too late, though. If Heyward starts tonight, he'd be the guy to go for as the team's young star corner outfielder.
  13. I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict Lawrie goes 1-4 tonight. I've been referring to him as Mr. 1-4 in my head for a while now - that's what he's done in 7 of the last 10 games and of course he's hitting exactly .250.
  14. Suppan's roster spot grows more and more ridiculous every day. With Stetter, Braddock, Axford, and Smith, there are at least 4 pitchers in Nashville who would be more valuable to the Brewers than Suppan. But on the flip side, you could argue that we don't really need another quality reliever right now, so we might as well keep the service clocks paused until the need arises. I'm not saying that's a good argument, but it's an argument.
  15. Wow, I hate to say it, but yuck. There are literally only three players on this roster I care about. I sure hope Prince's injury isn't serious.
  16. Thanks, And That. Sounds like classic Royals baseball. And I definitely don't think this locks up a rotation spot for Narveson. I don't really think he has a chance at the rotation simply because I can't see us going with four lefties. I do think he's fighting for the long man spot in the bullpen, though, and I can't imagine he won't get it at this point. If life was fair, Suppan would be released, but I have a feeling it's Bush that'll go because of the contract situation.
  17. Can someone explain this double play: (Narveson-Treanor-McGehee, C-Fielder-Gomez, C)? The only way I can explain it to myself is by assuming Escobar and Inglett ran into each other and fell down. Seriously, how are the 1B, 3B, and CF involved without the 2B or SS?
  18. I think we all saw these moves coming, but why so early? An injury or two in the next two weeks could make this look bad, especially for Iribarren. Then again, he might actually slip through waivers. Would the Brewers owe them money if they waited to cut them?
  19. I think you'd have a point if Gamel was clearly ready for a big league job or if he was out of options, but he has plenty to work on in AAA. While his defense may or may not be improved, it's definitely a question mark. He has not been able to stay both healthy and productive for a full season over the last two years, and his K rate was downright alarming last year. I'm still a huge Gamel fan and I prefer him over McGehee as the long-term answer at 3B, but right now the obvious thing to do is give McGehee a chance to prove last year was no fluke and give Gamel a chance to play every day and get better. I don't see any reason to rush him to Milwaukee.
  20. While .299 would have been a nice average, that was actually his OBP. He hit .248. Whoops.
  21. I should clarify that I'm hoping Gomez is in the 2-hole just to get more at bats. Putting your worst projected OBP at the top of the lineup would be pretty indefensible once the season starts.
  22. At this point it's probably just to get him as many Spring Training at bats as possible. He needs the most work, so he might as well hit at the top of the lineup.
  23. So Zito has to be suspended, right? I can't imagine they'll let him get away with it. What a stupid, petty thing to do. They think the Brewers acted without class, so they acted with even less class. Way to set an example, San Francisco.
  24. Anyone trying to listen in Madison? It doesn't appear to be on 1070 or 1310 and online is not an option for me. Boo.
  25. That's easy. Every Suppan start will be a game where we're down by a ton, so we don't even need to worry about it.
