  1. Yes, and sadly it was needed. The Herb Kohl approach of going for 85 wins year after year wasnt working. We needed an overahaul. My opinion is the Lind trade was really really bad, but thats just me. We wont replace his bat for 2016, but I dont think it matters because the team was going to lose 95+ games regardless. The farm system however looks like it will be top ten after the draft/Luc trade and guys like Phillips and Arcia look like possible All Stars. Santana and the two Astros pitchers look to be solid and possible plus players. If DS can turn Luc into a Shelby Miller lite move, this will be a very exciting farm system and the MLB roster will look excellent by 2017/18.
  2. You can't understand that people may not like that the Brewers may have just turned a proven, reasonably priced, major leaguer into three guys that are unlikely to amount to anything? I think it's possible to agree with Stearns' overall plan, and question individual decisions. Now, none of us know what else was on the table, but the Brewers farm system has come far enough that you can make an argument that lower risk quality might be more important than higher risk quantity at this stage. Especially since the Mariners farm system isn't exactly swimming in talent. And the money available would have been the same in either case. Agreed. Moving on from Lind makes perfect sense for a team that is likely to lose 95-100 games with or without Lind. That isn't the issue. The issue is trading for 3 guys that (I havent read every single post, so apologies if I missed one) all of us hard core fans had to go to google to find out who they were. That says a lot. It is VERY likely that none of the 3 will develop into anything based on their profiles. Could they? Sure, I suppose so. You'd have to be a very optimistic fan to spin this trade as anything other than a salary dump on a player who had a pretty darn reasonable contract. To put it another way, we did trade away a good asset and acquired no one that will crack our own top 30 or move the needle on our farm system to any degree at all. On paper, it appears that Doug picked up more for 2 months of Aram than DS picked up for a year of Lind. Ditto Parra. Time will tell but so far this offseason is a whole let less compelling than Dougs final two months. I am hardly a Doug fan, but so far the new guy hasnt shown much.
  3. Not enough. If we're wanting the #1 pick (or top 3), we've got to lose more. We're competing against the Phillies, Braves and whoever miraculously heads to suckitude this season. This team is going to lose a lot more than 90 games. None of the pieces we aquired this offseason will be MLB helpful in 2016 and there were meaningful subtractions in KRod and Lind. Not saying we shouldn't have traded them of course. Only that we didn't aquire talent in return that will help the MLB roster anytime soon, if ever. The MLB goal it would seem is to get another very high draft pick.
  4. After seeing what we got for Lind and how our current MLB roster is shaking out for 2016, I am not seeing wisdom in trading anything of value for a CF. This is looking like a strong candidate for a top 3 pick type of roster at the moment. Reed or even an out of position Santana is perfectly fine for 2016 while we wait for Phillips.
  5. Just for clarification baseball reference has Lind at 3.1 WAR for 2015 which is what i was quoting. I have zero idea what kind of arms we obtained only that for a relatively cheap year of a solid 1B we should receive someone we know. This does feel like we are getting too cute here and trading a very real asset for 3 small RHP that no one on a hard core baseball board has ever heard of. Or we just traded for Glavine, Smoltz, and Maddux in our 2021 rotation.
  6. Nothing against these kids at all, and I am happy we have them, just NOT at the price of a 3 WAR guy with a cheap contract.
  7. That is entirely incorrect. I am 99% sure that they were all international free agents not subject to the draft. You are right. But neither ranks as top 30 guys for a very bad Mariner farm system. To call that alarming is an understatement. I am liking Atlanta's GM a lot more than our guy.
  8. Well neither of us have seen these guys pitch but right now these arms look more like organizational depth and dont even fit the prospect label now. For a 3 WAR player at $8M that is an really poor use of an asset. 1B is a position of need, so it should have been a sellers market??? Im thinking I dont want DS trading Lucroy now.
  9. This is a trade you'd expect for Scooter or maybe Segura, not Lind. I might be putting too much stock in the top 30 and I certainly have never seen this guys, but its really hard to get excited by our offseason so far..........
  10. 3 guys not on the weak Mariners top 30 list for a 3 War player? Seriously underwhelming.
  11. None are in the top 30 prospects for the Mariners. Which is saying a lot.
  12. He has a 60 Fastball and is ranked as the Mariners number 2 prospect, such as that is. He is also a lefty. But you are right, he downright was terrible in 2015.
  13. Its not Peterson, but he did break his jaw at one point in the minors.
  14. The Mariners and Brewers have agreed to a trade that will send first baseman Adam Lind to Seattle in exchange for a pair of prospects, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports (Twitter link). Milwaukee will receive two lower-level prospects, per Heyman. Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times tweets that neither is on Seattle’s 40-man roster. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/12/brewers-trade-adam-lind-mariners.html
  15. StL has to be kicking themselves getting rid of Miller one year too early.
  16. Peterson was the 85th best prospect in baseball pre 2015. I wouldn't take him straight up for Lind of course, but seems like he has the tools to turn a bad 2015 around.
  17. Yeah, their stats are both really bad, no question. The 3rd pick in the draft in 2012 and the 12th pick in the draft in 2013. However, both guys were rushed and both were premier prospects quite recently. As it turns out Zunino isnt part of the trade anyhow per MLBtraderumors.
  18. I think you are being generous. Its 25% he makes it all on the major league level due to injuries. Id take him of course if the price is right because I love prospects, but to trade for him would give us the RH equivalent of Wang until 2017 if that.
  19. These are two former high first round picks with power plus at positions of need (assuming Luc goes). That would be a heck of a trade for one year of a very good but not elite 1B. Ive been very underwhelmed with DS so far but this would be quite a haul.
  20. Toronto is not a fit at all. As someone already mentioned, there are a small number of farm systems qualified to make a Lucroy trade and Toronto isnt one of them. Since they also don't have a need for a catcher, I dont see how they would be compelled to give us what we would want even if we were willing to except a quantity vs quality trade.
  21. Phillips is our guy by at the latest 2017. So what is one year worth of a stop gap CF to us especially if it means we are going to lose 100 games AND not give Santana ABs?
  22. With the team not going to leap StL, Pitt, or Chi, I can't imagine why it would matter who our CF is until Phillips is ready. If they don't want to start Santana there, and I see no reason why not (just to get him ABs), this should be a very minor acquisition.
  23. If he comes out and does anything he can be traded based on his contract not being THAT bad at this point and his decent resume. I wouldnt trade him at this point since his value is about as low as it can possibly get.
