  1. Why does he need to play when we have so many better options and everyone can still get plenty of days off by rotating them all? He should be happy getting the big league check and just being there for emergency due to his positional flex. Sogard took his spot by massively outplaying him, that's the way she goes sometimes. That said, the way CC has been going Frankling will get 3 hits today.
  2. I was going to say something similar about Franklin but trying not to be too critical as CC seems to be pulling some good strings. I know he wants lefties and all but I'd still much prefer Broxton or Aria in there. Both have been solid lately, Brox just homered last night. Franklin basically shouldn't see the field with all the other options we have with this team which is surprisingly very deep.
  3. What about a guy like David Robertson due to our financial situation? Obviously he's way overpaid, but it's only through 2018, 12 mil this and 13 next. Basically the logic I'm suggesting would be that we'd be using money and our low payroll to add a player rather than using prospects of significance. He's still a solid pitcher but with his pay I can't imagine them getting much back for him without eating salary. We could just take the whole salary and hopefully give very little back. Maybe I'm wrong and a desperate contending team still outbids, just an idea. Garza is gone next year so he kind of just takes that salary. Of course this is still all contingent on being ahead in the division by deadline which is a big if. And I'm sure there's some cheaper better options but I'm thinking those would cost more in prospects than him, which we really don't want to give up. Most important to me is that it's not my money. Also, could likely re-flip him next deadline if we're not contending next year. Salary wouldn't be an issue at that point as he'd be expiring.
  4. One would think a real contender like the Nats would trump us anyway and we shouldn't be in any spot where we should be getting in a bidding war.
  5. Wow this is pretty pathetic to look at, think it's the worst in MLB? ETA: Probably Colorado would be worse. But understandable due to being new and their obvious issues there.
  6. It's weird to look at NL Central standings today. Every team lost last night and all are below .500 in last 10. We've lost 2 in a row, Cubs 5, Reds and Cards 3. We've been really close in a few of our games recently, it really wouldn't be far fetched at all to have a 4-5 game lead right now (I know all 3 teams at top of Central could say that) which would be crazy considering our expectations at the beginning of the season. Hopefully can get these 2 against the Mets before seeing Kershaw on Friday (I think). The longer we hang around in this the better, could make for a fun summer. Also, as much as we all expect the Cubs to get it together. It's not unrealistic to think their struggles continue as their pitching is still largely not good right now. Last year relied heavily on Arrieta/hendricks and neither has really shown signs yet of being back to that level. and their 5th spot is still a mess with seemingly no fix in place as of now. Now if Lester gets hurt they're in trouble. I still expect Arrieta/Hendricks to be better than they have been (even if not on last year's level) but there is a shot they just continue to be mediocre guys this year just like our guys are for the most part. Just saying it's not unrealist at all for that team to continue to struggle and for the NL Central winner to only have 87-89ish wins, if that's the case anything is possible.
  7. I'd guess their logic of the second extension was that by doing it so early they only locked themselves into age 36 and they didn't want to face the possibility of him being a FA at age 31/32 (whatever it would have been) when he'd presumably still be a superstar level hitter and where they would have had to let the best hitter in franchise history leave, or the other option of paying a dumb Pujols type contract until he's like 39/40. That's my guess on the risk/reward they were looking at. It eliminated them having ridiculous deal on the books for his late 30s. And every year they waited he would have gotten more leverage to add more to it. Of course in hindsight that wouldn't have been the case, but you can't blame management for the PED/injuries to a guy like him in seemingly great shape. No way they could see that coming. Let's just get the DH by the 2019 season approved so we can stop worrying about this as much.
  8. Yea constantly getting pitched away now and he's willing to take the walks. Teams are probably fine with it too since Braun isn't there. I've actually said for years the most impressive thing about Braun is that he's managed to completely adjust to getting pitched almost exclusively low and away, and he still manages to hit the ball hard and produce (when healthy of course). It's not an easy thing to do, hopefully Thames figures it out. Regardless the walks should be there though and he'll still be a solid hitter
  9. Couldn't watch last night, i went throught the game thread but didn't see an answer. Why was Villar pulled early from the game? Just a standard double switch situation?
  10. I'd like to get a very good prospect in that example. We're basically just cutting a year off of the contract if it is Braun for Sandoval straight up. Braun is paid $~20 million/year through 2020 with a '21 option of $4 million buyout and Sandoval is $18 million through '19 with a '20 option of $5 million buyout. We're basically giving Boston an All Star DH to save $20 million in a year that we'll barely need it. Let's say this rebuild is going pretty well and by 2019 we've got a playoff contending team with a deep farm system. Look at teams like Houston who have done this and to plug holes they'll sign an overpriced vet like Beltran to a 2-year deal because when you're contending, you might as well spend up to $100+ million instead of staying at the $55 million all of your young team fills up. We'll essentially just be signing Braun to one of those gap-filling deals for a 2 year deal. We do have depth at OF, so maybe Braun is the overpriced 4th OF by then, maybe (unlikely) we'll be able to have a DH in '19/'20, or maybe we trade Braun for a similarly overpriced pitcher to be our #4 starter or for an overpriced 3B if we don't have a solution there. I agree i'd rather just keep him unless you get something legit. Just putting out a basic framework that could work but of course lots of things around it to sort out. Plus, Pablo isn't a known lying cheater. He just takes contracts and then gets fat and doesn't try. That seems important to many.
  11. You can just play Perez in LF. Maybe send down Franklin for a better OF backup though, rather not see a real prospect up just to have him sit the bench. Grab kirk types if you need, but don't start them.
  12. I'd actually say the vast majority of players cut corners in some way or have done something immoral or lacking integrity in some part of life and most teams have someone like that or who cheated in some way. There's cheating that goes on every day in baseball but everyone just looks the other way. Let's just say I don't see any outrage on here for what Paul Molitor was doing. Overall we all society should chill a bit on the gotcha way they treat public people and make sure to keep the Glass houses/throw stones line.
  13. Right but Bos would have a need for him at DH and we'd take Sandoval's contract to help their cost a bit. We'd save money, they'd get a DH and middle of the order bat they desperately need. Sandoval is essentially useless to us, it's just the money so hopefully they'd throw in some lower level lotto ticket type in a deal like this. Who knows if he'd even consider going into the media circus of Bos and just east coast in general, but maybe with every injury he realizes more and more he needs to be a DH. And apparently in Boston as long as you hit well and win a title or two you're still a hero in spite of PEDs.
  14. Yea I don't put any stock in the public images presented by any athlete, celebrity, politician. Over and over they're proven to be complete frauds. But to Brew4u, so are most average joes too. They just don't have a camera on them
  15. He had no choice but to lie, every player caught for this has lied. Big Papi still is to this day and is going to walk into eh Hall right next to Pudge. What was he gonna do, beat the case and then admit it? his mistake aside from doing it to begin with was so adamantly defending himself, knowing that he'd done it he should have been humble. He had to deny it but should have done it while just blaming it flaws in the testing system, mistakes happen, blah blah and get off the topic. Hey, it kept him on the field with that injury late in 2011 (groin I think?) and it almost got us a title...
  16. He did apologize for that, just like everyone gives BS apologies. And the collector did not do his job properly.
  17. Yea it sucks the way this looks now. But contract-wise we all should remember it's the nature of MLB contracts that these guys get massively underpaid the first chunk of their career and massively overpaid at the end to compensate. As recently as 2015 he was making 'only' 12 mil. Basically just reminding everyone that in spite of MKE likely getting negative value the next few years that they got way more value out of him prior to this and that's kind of just the way it is in baseball. In 2011 and 2012 which he should've been MVP in both he made 10 mil combined for both years. Just trying to keep it in perspective.
  18. Even last year would've surprisingly gotten close to .500 without the Lucroy and relievers all getting traded. Once again, another thing to remember is at the time of all those decisions they were planning on having an MVP level player in the heart of his prime. Brauns' hand injury and suspension was a huge curveball they could not have predicted. That's where I think hindsight they should've pulled the plug the offseason after that happened. I don't want to look exactly back but I'm not sure what more they would've had to sell at that point that they still weren't able to a couple years later.
  19. Exactly what I'm getting at, thanks Brew4u. I'd say most agree we probably held on the 'go for it' mode a year or two too long. But in spite of that look at all the assets we still had to sell once we did it so I'd say they did alright all things considering. Nobody is perfect.
  20. Just saw a stat during the Cubs game that MKE has 4th best bullpen ERA this year in the NL? I never would've guessed that.
  21. Fair enough, that's reasonable. Problem comes that you'd logically then starting looking trading Weeks, Gallardo, etc after that and you never actually go for the title. No way I could've seen that team competing for playoffs within 3-4 years unless you got back ML ready high quality pitching in the trades for Hart/Prince. And i think we all know how likely teams are to give away ready pitching, which is almost never. You'd have had to go to lower levels and wait for them to make it, or more likely bust.
  22. Agreed. And I wouldn't want to do any 'win now' unless we were ahead in the division so just trying to maintain at that point. Don't bother at all if you're chasing, heck that should be excuse to pull the trigger on moving Garza or whatever pieces make sense to sell.
  23. And on almost every team you can point out weaknesses like you did on our 2011 team. Look at the Cards that year who won it. no starting pitching, had to get an out of nowhere hot streak from Freese and a late season trade for a washed up and oft injured Furcal who managed to stay healthy and get hot at the right time. Almost impossible to build a perfect team. Our team had tow legit MVP level hitters and added a legit ace in his prime and had solid backend of bullpen going 4ish guys deep. 2012 could've easily contended too if not for a month of horrid bullpen. Remember that team still almost snuck in the playoffs after trading Greinke. Good discussion of the past by all. Even all that we just said trying to get back to original topic of this season, I don't think any of us would argue we're currently at a similar stage as going into 2011. Not even close.
  24. The championship is the goal line and they almost won it, they should have won it.
  25. I honestly don't know how you could advocate for tearing down before 2011. Why even have a team if you're going to punt at the goal line? You're just perpetually trading for the future, you have to win at some point and they put out a team that was the favorite to win it all in the final 4. Up 1-0 in the NLCS with home field in WS
