  1. I'll take it, was hoping for another prospect with Davies but for a 2 month rental of an ok of what can you really expect. Besides trying to get more from Baltimore I wonder if Melvin was looking a high minors 3B instead as that spot really hasn't been addressed, I'm sure that's what the plan was with Flores. I guess that's what the target would be for when Lind gets traded. I'd be fine bringing Davies or one of the other minor leaguers like Cravy right away and put Lohse in mop up, see what they can do.
  2. I don't think they'd ever had to "pay" for Davis. He's streaky and came up older so just ride him out years in arby and see what happens with him. No way you'll have to make a big commitment to him.
  3. Santana is 6'5 225. Why not have him start working at 1B in AAA now and see how he does? Have him ready to play it when Lind is inevitably traded this offseason or by the deadline next year. I understand he's never played it before and Braun has IF background so it's probably easier for him, but I would bet Braun is a better OF than this guy in spite basically just being average.
  4. I couldn't remember for sure, so I just went to look at them a bit. Seems he has been in the rotation the last two months or so, doing ok. Last I remembered he was bouncing back and forth. They look really week at 2B and 3B too, well actually SS too. Their rotation is fine with Sale and Quintana as longer term pieces and could afford to trade Rodon if they're confident in keeping Samardzija. As Brewer fans I'm sure we wouldn't be OK with trading a cost controlled young potential top of rotation starter for a 1.5 year rental but similar things happens. If they balk maybe add in Segura or Fiers and find a way, maybe even Parra as their OF is weak. They also have the money their to sign Gomez so they could view it as a longer term thing
  5. Think Carlos Rodon from the White Sox would be possible for Gomez? Has all his team control left.
  6. Wow, reading that Haudricourt summary I wonder how anyone deals with these guys. Yes, they have a completely loaded young pitching staff set up for years of winning, so frustrating. Yea Flores could still click but far more likely not, but no way we were getting enough back from Gomez, maybe for Parra but that probably wouldn't be enough for the Mets. I just tried to point out that when the guy is in someone else's system he has potential (flores), when in ours he's replacement level and has no value(segura) when really they're very similar. Just lots of grass is greener people I guess.
  7. So he has potential and Segura doesn't? they're one year apart in age. He's better now? he has a .281 obp, worse than the main thing Segura gets ripped for. The guy has been up for 2.5 years and never an OBP over .285. The only difference is power potential, most people rip on our management for getting so many power guys with low contact/obp guys, that's what he looks like. I didn't look at his K rate but he looks like low obp but some power for an infielder, and he's probably more capable of playing 3B than Segura. I guess if I was doing a straight up trade of the two I'd probably take a flyer on Flores over Segura the chance that he can improve his avg/obp, whereas Segura probably is what he is at this point. But it's pretty debatable and in this trade we'd be giving up one of the best players baseball the last two years. Gotta have more than a so/so IF prospect back and pitcher on TJ.
  8. Flores doesn't improve the 2016 team? Nonsense. My guess is you'll be underwhelmed by what they do end up with. So most people on here basically say Segura is 'replacement level' and really not good. Yet Flores improves the team? Only thing it helps is to be a 'replacement level' player at 3B through the next couple crap years instead of whatever else we have. Really could get about the same from Sardinas and not have to give up our best asset. If there is concern on Gomez's hip and not great play this year. Hold him, let him get healthy and/or play well the last couple months and trade him in the offseason. Need to get more back than a TJ pitcher and a middling IF, which we already have a few. If he was a FA this year then yea take what you can get but there is no rush right now.
  9. I'm on board with others as being unimpressed with this return. A pitcher currently out with tj and another middling infielder similar to segura sardines we already have. Kind of worried they're trying to work these trades into retools to compete next year instead actual rebuilds like we'd prefer. Gomez was a top 5 player the last two years under team control for next year for cheap and it seems we got less than all the other deals that have happened for lesser rental players
  10. Oh, so all we need to do is get rid of our old, crap free agent signing pitcher and develop a top 10 pick into an ace? And if we take away our two awful months we're an 84 win team? [sarcasm]Yay![/sarcasm] Take that away and a true ace and you're basically the same as the Giants and win around 90. I wasnt bringing it up to try and claim the route is right, just about how close things are in baseball and that it really has come down to not developing pitching. The lineup has been adequate this whole time and so has the pen really outside of the first half of 2012. And I bring up those two months because it's so fluky, I mean [expletive deleted by moderator] happened. Also bring it up because people on here wouldn't be acting like this FO is the worst ever if they'd made the playoffs last year and were in wc contention now, just pointing out the gap isn't that big. Also take a look at a boxscore from the WS of the Giants over the years, you'll be surprised how blah it is. Starting pitching development is the difference. The only route they had after failed development of their own pitching was these old vet signings and trades.
  11. If you think about, the current team could compete if they just had an ace pitcher like a Bumgardner in place of Lohse. SF just won the world series starting Ishikawa in left due to one hot pitcher. Our 'team' is better than theirs, as weird as that is to say I think you know what I mean. But they have Bumgardner and actually play smart and generally put the ball in play more consistently, though we have more power. That's how close things are in baseball, unfortunately we all know that ace isn't walking through the door anytime soon. And this generally solid core lineup is about to dwindle with Gomez leaving, Braun aging, Ramirez gone, etc. It all comes back to not developing pitching to match up with the core at the right time, the current guys up look somewhat promising though missing an ace type, but they're a couple years too late. If you take away just Sept and April (still including some rough stuff around) they're 112-103, 14-34 in those two months. I'd really like to know what happened there behind the scenes with Roenicke to lead to such apathy.
  12. All I'm saying is these posts are acting like this guy is some kind of bumbling idiot when he's overseen the second best run the team has ever had. This is the first time he's had to go through this situation as owner, give him a chance and hope that someone who is heavily involved, cares, and is willing to spend money more than anyone here ever has will figure it out and learn from mistakes and the next run ends in a WS. Of course he'll make mistakes, everyone does, but the guy is trying though. Maybe support him instead of calling him a moron. I guess the other attitude is better, "if you don't win the WS in your first 10 years you're an absolute failure and should lose the team".
  13. Well, and I mean this sincerely, hopefully the Brewers can lose enough in the next several years so that Mark will sell the team. Because the current model clearly isn't working. He needs to either change his ways, or sell.... otherwise we'll be constantly in this .500 team "catch lightning in a bottle" hoodwink that he is perpetuating on himself and the fanbase. Mark Attanasio is his own worst enemy. I get where this line of thinking comes from and agree they should bite the bullet here for a couple years. But does everyone not remember the 20 years before he came? I mean, we have a guy who wants to win badly, that's generally a good thing and better than someone who doesn't care, puts out a crap team and collects the profits based on revenue sharing and franchise value going up. Maybe he bought the wrong team if he went into with that mindset but ease up a bit, the guy is trying to make a winner in the smallest market. Beats the heck out of what we had before. Some of the posts read like he's some joke of an owner like the Marlins, Clippers, etc. I bet if he knew the Dodger were coming for sale he'd have waited a few years, seems like he fits better for a team with those kind of resources.
  14. exactly. Signing him means you're going to stay down the path of trying to put together a .500ish roster and hope things fall right to win 88 games and make the playoffs. Which means you have to keep Gomez and Lucroy or it's pointless. Looking at the past two months or so, getting above .500 next year doing that plan isn't really crazy to pull off but you're really not building a true contender. And since Gomez will almost assuredly wait to hit FA without signing an extension so he'll be gone after next year so it's really only one more year of potentially making the playoffs if everything falls right. And with STL, CHC, Pit remaining strong it's just not likely.
  15. This is their one big payday of their career, they both have every right to maximize it. Gomez at least had that 30mil contract, Lucroy has gotten next to nothing (relatively speaking of course) for an MLB player. Gomez is going to get 100mil plus. Lucroy having two cheap years left still could probably be pressured to take a team friendly deal just so he puts money in the bank. I guess I wouldn't be totally opposed to it if it was super team friendly but no way on a Molina type extension. It sounds like he wants to play for a contender and he's our best chip to jump start the rebuild.
  16. Lucroy may come at a decent price given this season's fall-off. I'd offer him a 3-year, $22.5 million extension - especially if the system still cranks out starting pitching prospects. Ditto for Gomez. I'll happily offer him 3 years, $36 million. If you can sign them to those extension it will only increase their trade values. That's not even in the ballpark of what these guys are looking for. Though you could probably talk Lucroy into something reasonable since he hasn't made any money yet and might value the comfort of having 35-40mil in the bank no matter what
  17. I'm fine with 6 and I'm fine to just use Lohse in mop up or to let a guy skip a start here or there if he feels tired/off. I wouldn't just release Lohse unless he demands it due to being pulled from the rotation. Last thing I want to see is home going back to STL, they of course fix him and get 6 good starts from him down the stretch.
  18. The logic is he's playing way over his head so sell high rather than give him a big contract and have him come back to reality while paying him 15mil a year.
  19. So, why not get young impact bats instead? [sarcasm]Agreed, veteran starting pitchers on short term 3/30 type deals can easily be had to fill the gap if we need pitching.[/sarcasm] Yea I agree though, doesn't have to be pitching. They can use help pretty much everywhere in the system.
  20. Who doesn't do it though really to some degree? It seems they're really going harder than most but it's commonplace for all teams to go for it. I guess Tampa is the only one who really haven't in recent years, and so far 0 titles.
  21. Besides Bill Hall? Even that was only like 4 years and under 30 mil. Maybe Rickie but that was mostly injuries and he did make an ASG in there and I wouldn't call his deal 'bloated', wasn't even 10 per year if I remember. JJ, didn't extend. Hart, exact right amount really. Prince, no extension. Gallardo, about perfect. Lucroy, about perfect assuming they don't hand him a big deal now. Gomez, about perfect and possibly not extended quite enough. CC, no deal. Greinke, no deal. Aoki, traded instead of signing. All the mediocre "closers" over the years never got big deals. Can rip the aging pitcher signings if you want but I don't really see this area as a problem. Braun's is it's own situation that's already been beaten to death.
  22. It wouldn't surprise me if the only move they do is Parra, and I would be shocked if Parra isn't traded.
  23. Where are the people who a few weeks ago were using KC as an example of a good FO while ours is brutal due to us trading everyone and "going for it"? I read a quick summary of the prospects, seems to be a very good haul for 2 months since they have 0 chance of signing Cueto. I saw they are looking for OF and 2B help too with Parra being mentioned. What do they have left in the system for a Parra/Segura package?
  24. Yea it depends on definition. Of course management is treating him like and trying to make him the face but if we're discussing like espn blowhards arguing about whether someone is "elite", but in this case we're talking whether someone is "the face" then I would say No. He's just not at that level of player and there wouldn't be the uproar like if we traded Prince in 2010 or Braun a little later. He's kind of pushed by management out of default. Really it should be Gomez but I'm sure they were worried about possibly trading him this year and for promotions he doesn't really speak the greatest English. As someone else said, it's Braun, like it or not
