One of the things that used to get me the most with the Cardinals is they would take any offense to our young guys actions, especially if Braun celebrated a HR in anyway or watched it for one or two steps. Yet Pujols back in his glory days was probably the worst HR watcher/walker/poser since Bonds. Personally I don't care if he did it, but then what gives you the right to plunk Braun intentionally multiple times each season

I'm generally on his side. He made a mistake and was mad about. No different than a bball or football player angrily spiking or slamming the ball after a mistake. The yanks then yell at him and confront him and he's the bad guy. For the most part this is how his issues have gone, he doesn't do anything specific to anyone yet they come after him and he defends himself.

I agree Monty. The trades might not happen until the deadline though, at which point Phillips comes up. But I think if Lind finishes the year healthy and hitting, offseason has to be the best time to trade him. And it's the best time for someone else to be training at 1B rather than doing it on the fly in season

Cueto and Price ar FA this year. Dodgers have a young all star C they got back for Matt Kemp. [sarcasm]Although, he was in the same scandal as Braun so maybe they'll kick him off the team. Maybe he has the same negative attitude that apparently Braun has. You could say to give him back for us but then what's the point, flipping one PED cancer for another.[/sarcasm]

He looks like he has the build to be adequate at center if he just plays there every day and learns the little things. That said, he did botch one of the wall last night. Kid should be playing every day here on out. If they don't like the trade options on Lind or Davis just roll with him in center with next year being a loss anyway. Someone will get injured and he'll be able to play a lot of corner OF too. Braun has to at least put in some work at 1B this off-season so he can play there if Lind gets hurt or at least vs lefties (while Lind is there). Can actually give Lucroy a real day off then next year.

Last night was brutal. Mechanics were completely off and he was off balance after almost every pitch. He probably won't be right until next season. -
I think they're in the same boat in that Pujols was a user too. Difference is of course he's never been caught other than a past trainer of his saying he did it. I would be every dollar I have that at some point Pujols knowingly took something he knew he wasn't supposed to. Probably not at the level A-rod was but I bet he's done much more than Braun ever did, just on account of it being earlier before the testing came in so he could get away with it.

And to this, I totally get how one can make that argument. And if this was a few years back with brutal teams Pitt, Houston, Chi, and mediocre Cin in our division I would probably say yea, why not at least try. But there's no reason to think Chi, Stl, and Pit aren't going to be very good again next year. Maybe Pit will come back to earth a bit but should still at least be in WC contention and above .500. Now's not the time, load up for 2017 and beyond.

I think you missed the main point. For the top 5 to happen that means your 3 young starters all flopped and none of the young hitters did anything. Thus making the future very bleak. Future looks pretty good if you win 74-77 games, 3-4 of the young pitchers do well. Santana does well, Arcia comes up and does well, etc. Lucroy, K-rod, Lind do well and fetch good prospects.

I think you can include Davis as a player they've developed and though he's having an off year, Gennett's put up decent numbers for a 2B: .289/.321/.435, albeit in a platoon over roughly his first 1,000 career PA. The only "stars" they've developed over the past 15 years were drafted in the top 10. They last picked that high in 2005. Your argument in the first paragraph doesn't hold up. Betancourt had 5 RBI and an .875 OPS in the NLCS in 2011 and Hairston, who by that time was playing 3B and not McGehee, posted .391/.440/.565 in the NLCS. They got by just fine with that left side because they had the most potent duo in baseball in the 3 and 4 spot in the order all year. They wouldn't have had that had they traded Fielder. Starting pitching is what failed them in the postseason, in particular the two they traded the core of their system for, Marcum and Greinke. If anything it was the inability to develop/draft quality starting pitching in the decade of the 2000's that did them in and they are still feeling it. Way off point here, the premise was to do more to improve the team. Pick whatever you want as the moves. Also, that leftside was terrible at defense and offense all season. And in spite of good O in the playoffs it was brutal on D. If they win 1-2 more games heads up vs STL, then STL doesn't make the playoffs. Maybe you're content there and trade for another pitcher, could be anything, that was just the most obvious weakness on the squad. Torts, exactly. And KC is basically going down our same path in going for it with their trades the last years. Specifically Cueto and Shields.

To be devil's advocate, maybe they should have made a few more trades and spent more money so we didn't have to start a left side of Betancourt and Mcgehee, maybe they would have won it all. I agree with your main premise here though. They should be trying to get guys to take deals that buy out a few years of FA and puts them in FA around ages 30-32, then grit your teeth and let them go or trade them. The problem here is that is what they did with Lucroy, Gallardo, Hart, Weeks, Gomez and others. Fielder just wouldn't do it and of course Braun was the exception they felt to lock up long term. These two are exceptions to the rule since they were true superstars. What I mean is, they did do this. Problem of course is Hart and Weeks were not able to bring anything back at the end (production or prospects) for various reason. To re-iterate my take on this old argument. The problem has been brutal draft/development for the last 7+ years. Not the trades, extensions or signings, of course you can nitpick some but no one will ever shoot 100%. They just haven't developed much for a long stretch before what looks like something now in Nelson, Jungmann, and maybe Peralta if he rebounds.

The guy was fine last year. This year started horrible for everyone then he got hurt and hasn't recovered. Give him the offseason to recover and come back strong next year before writing him off. If every pitcher that went through a crappy stretch was discarded and sent to the pen, well I guess there wouldn't be many starters left. -
This argument has been beaten to death in numerous threads. Some argue on here that once a guy is up and proven good but it is a year or two away from FA then they need to be traded for future prospects, they would be the ones arguing against extending Braun and for trading Fielder in 09 or 10. You seem to be in the more commonground of rebuild right now but if/when this pile of prospects hits that we should try to win the WS rather than just trade them and that there is a few of those prospects that need to be extended (like we did with Braun, Gallardo, Weeks, etc last time) and you're likely open to a trade to fill a hole at that point. I haven't seen anyone make that point in this thread but this argument has been beaten to death over the last few months and some argue that line. Personally I'm fine with the rebuild right now. Lind and Lucroy have to go too eventually. Hoping Lucroy can come to next season healthy and have a really strong first few months and they clean someone out.

There others who are more extreme than your stance, wanting to trade everything. That's what he was getting at. That being said, TB doesn't really look like it will be competing for the playoffs anytime soon now that all their high picks are gone, so they went through a window just like us. Yea they've hung around mediocrity the last couple years just like we did, yet we're idiots and they're genius. Maybe they should have traded a few prospects over the years when they were in contention and they would have won, we'll never know. Yet nobody makes that argument ever on here, just that we were wrong to go for it.

Rewind to 2008 and other teams would have been listing us as the examples. We'll see how long they sustain it and if they win anything. All everyone did by refuting the guys point by saying how we should get more prospects was prove his point. He was being a little facetious and taking it to the max to prove the point. Everyone knows a small market team needs to build through the draft to have cheap contracts, the difference is what to do once they hit on several at the same time. Many here say to trade them high and get more prospects, that's all he was saying he disagreed with.

I totally get why one would make that type of sarcastic joke. I feel there is a lot of people on here who greatly over value prospects and seem to want to be in perpetual re-build mode. Kind of like why trade for all these prospects if you're just going to trade them for other prospects if they end up being good rather than keeping them and going in win-now mode. I get the argument

I think it was meant to be a jab at the folks who always want to be trading for the future rather than actually trying to win.

Just looking at that stat link it reminded me of Ted Williams and Babe Ruths' OBPs. 482 and 474, that's nuts. To me the steroids are in the background. It was inevitable the record would be broken when you moved fences in 50-100 feet.

I generally like Davis but I think he's kind of maxed out as the descent hitter he is now and that he's underrated, but he is brutal on D. If we had nothing else I'd be fine with riding him on the cheap as long as he keeps being like he has. And I like him because he just keeps proving everyone wrong but his swing is so funky that I think we all fear the bottom is going to fall out at some point and that he's always going to be streaky. I just can't believe he's been as successful as he has with his step out of the box swing. Hope he keeps it up though and at least earns one solid contract from someone, seems to be a hard worker and good guy.

trwi, I agree. It's only a few weeks to get him at bats. Something will be resolved with Braun/Davis/Lind in the offseason. Someone mentioned him needing to be ok with playing center. I'm sure he's happy to collect a big league paycheck for the next 6 weeks, don't see him complaining too much. Will probably make more in the next 6 weeks than he has in the last 4 years. Someone mentioned Davis going to 1b and being replacement level. That's not an option, he's lf and lf only. It's Braun or Santana to first. Braun should at least be able to be adequate with his IF background and an offseason of work. And of course he should be able to hit well above replacement level. Who knows on Santana there or anywhere, hope to see good things the next few weeks.

By next deadline Lind will be gone, if not sooner. Frees up a spot for someone to move to 1B. Of course Davis might be traded by then too but Lind will be for sure

Totally agree. I didn't like the Mets trade right away, was happy to see it fall through. The more I learn about what we got back from Houston the more I like, hopefully at least two of these guys end up as quality big leaguers, and anything more than that is gravy. And as of now it looks like more than two.

I hope to see him in center most days at this point. Who cares if he doesn't quite hack it on D right now. At the very least some time in center will only make him better at right or left in the future. And who knows, maybe he'll be fine and you can play him there to start next season until something resolves itself with Davis, Braun, Lind.

Heck, trot him out there in center to finish the year then. Why not. Peterson has been fine and all but isn't really a prospect beyond backup outfielder.

Not sure why they would need a LH first baseman right now who isn't really a prospect long term. with the DH needed next week and 3 off days to keep the BP fresh I'd bring up Santana. Then get some arms when Sept comes around
