  1. Yea I only agree if he takes a massively team friendly deal. Like say a 3/30 extension. So he'd only be signed until 34/35ish age. You might be able to talk him into something similar since he's made almost no money in his career so far, might just take it so he doesn't have to worry about money ever again and the risk that would come with being 31 when he hits FA. If he gets hurt again or doesn't hit well he might not get the monster deal. But I doubt he takes something like that, I think he wants a trade and then work an extension with that team. He is our best chip to really jump start the rebuild, I think you play it, it's not like his 'marketability' is anything close to Braun/Fielder in their day. He's not a start anywhere near that level.
  2. No I didn't see it and don't really plan to. I just saw a few articles and they thought it was good.
  3. If he was truly innocent that was the way to go as he would have had no skeletons in his closet. At that point I guess he was "all-in" and went for it hoping this Biogen thing would never come out. I see why he did it, who would've thought MLB would go through the lengths they did. Still, probably should have been humble about. Especially if that synthetic thing is true. Either way glad to see getting the first ASG out of the way, just another step towards everyone moving on and enjoying the game. Arod seems to be doing everything right as well, I didn't see the Espy thing he did last night but supposedly it went over well. Can't believe they even nominated him for the award actually.
  4. Yup that was his big mistake, besides of course doing it. He knew he'd done something and there was a chance something could eventually come out. Should have never been so brash. Could be on the synthetic, I'm no scientist. There was so much stuff thrown around back then.
  5. I don't believe there is such a test, one of the misnomers perpetuated by ESPN. They view it as synthetic if it's a certain level, there's no way of knowing if it was natural or not. Supposedly it was the highest test ever to go through the process and was just barely under the limit that would have allowed it to be thrown out because something had to be wrong with the test. That's what was reported by insiders at the time, obviously no evidence was ever given to people like us to know if that was true or some hype put out by Braun's camp.
  6. And it's sounding like Jabari won't be ready for the beginning of the season. That Dudley trade is making less and less sense. Would've loved to see Perry Jones from OKC. I liked what I see from Vaughn so far, he might get thrown in the fire a bit if Parker is out and someone else goes down.
  7. That quote doesn't even mention having to pay BJ Upton's contract. This pails in comparison to what the brewers traded away that panned out (Escobar, Cain, Odorrazi, Brantley). Especially when you factor in it took Brantley 6 years to do much and that only one of he and Cain could have played. And that Escobar was comparably replaced by Segura. The article also got into what the prospects were doing in the minors in their new spots, more guys will likely make impacts. A key for them will be what they get back from Upton at the deadline, have to trade him really and they need to nail the prospects back to make up for what they gave up. After that, yes give it another year and hope the pitching does better next year with some infield D upgrades or picking up a true CF to take Upton's spot.
  8. I never heard the names. I understood it that every person tested the same day as Braun at Miller Park all had astronomically high tests that were thrown out, but Braun's was slightly below whatever the throw out line is. Pretty bland ASG for the most part, I guess because it wasn't really down to the wire. Loved the HR Derby.
  9. http://grantland.com/features/aj-preller-mlb-san-diego-padres-national-league-west/ Article on what happened in SD last offseason, seems like a disaster.
  10. It hurt him being in Cinncy so they're aware. TV here cut in really late as the pitch was coming in already so couldn't really hear the walkup, fans seemed to be happy when he hit the triple and scored through. Did they boo Peralta, Cruz, Grandal?
  11. right I never intended for a debate on Segura, was just the most obvious example in front of. To me the whole point comes to this phrase MLB-ready replacements as to why moves like this are risky as we have no idea of these guys are MLB quality. So you trade from this position thinking that but if they don't pan out then you're left with nothing, that's all I was saying. Arcia on the other hand is now considered elite prospect so no one can blame a GM if he trades to open a spot for him. For guys like Sardinas/Rivera who knows. Unless you get something juicy for Segura I'd rather let Sardinas/Rivera/Scooter play 2B and 3B and see who swims.
  12. Yes and two No votes aren't present today. They would show up if their votes matter but they know it's passing.
  13. Sorry it's semantics to me. To me competent means a guy in the middle of the pack like 14th and that holding his own but not really a star and that's what he is to me. I don't mind flipping him if the right thing presents itself as Sardinas probably won't be massive disaster like a Yuni. This was all about discussing trading minor leaguers for other minor leaguers and trying to explain why teams don't do it and went off on a tangent.
  14. Didn't someone just post he's had a positive WAR the last two years. Isn't that kind the definition of competent. I think someone used some figures that ranked him the #14 SS in MLB this year.
  15. Who says they won't make it? You never know, odds are against simply because most don't. You can play Sardinas and Rivera right now at 2B and 3B until mid next year when Arcia needs to come up. You should have a good idea on them by then. Chances are they won't show much offense, hopefully one performs and is deemed worthy of a starting spot. Then you can bring up Arcia and have Ardinas/Rivera, Segura and Arcia as your infield. But yea I'm fine with trading Segura now if you get something back that you view favorably, like in a Mets deal with Ramirez that nets some kind of pitching prospect. The basis of this question all started around trading minor leaguers for minor leaguers didn't it? Trading a proven MLB player to free up spots for unproven mid level prospects that are by no means locks to be MLB starters is what I was talking about. It makes sense in an Overbay/Fielder situation. And yes it's starting to look that way with Segura/Arcia but we currently have two other starting spots available in the IF. Sardinas/Rivera are who knows types.
  16. Why not just move Segura to 2B or 3B when Arcia comes up? Unless of course you get a deal that you feel is clearly in your favor. Otherwise just keep the competent MLB starter in Segura that is cheap for a few more years as the others likely won't make it.
  17. Sorry, I thought winning 15 consecutive and getting in the playoff chase was being irrationally optimistic and he was joking. Like several posts in the optimist thread. Nothing wrong with want to see them win as much as possible, totally legit to me. I've enjoyed them playing generally well the last two months or so. Beats the heck out of what April was like
  18. If Sardinas is ML ready he should be up playing 2B and 3B to see how he hits. My guess is he won't be able hit enough to be a starter.
  19. Or the one that you decide to trade pans out, the guy you got back doesn't and none of the SS you kept panned out either. In the Brewers situation you just move them to 2B and 3B and see if they can hit big league pitching. By the time Arcia is ready we'll know if Scooter and Perez are legit players. You can even move one to LF if Davis doesn't pan out. Maybe even one to CF after you trade Gomez.
  20. I think it's a factor. but also because a GM would wonder what's wrong with the other team's prospect if the GM is willing to give up on him for just your prospect. Mostly this comes down to no matter how set you think you're at a position in the minors chances are they're not all panning out. And if they do they can usually change positions, other than some 1B. And if you're set at the MLB level with a star and someone is banging down the door, you just switch one of their positions and give the young guy a chance. Or you trade the prospect for a position of need. Or you do the Lyle Overbay type trade. Basically, you don't trade them until you know what they are, unless you secretly know the guy isn't that good and want to rip someone off (which is what the opposing GM is fearing). I know that was a ramble, but hope it made sense.
  21. I'm looking for them to win out in July and be at .500 heading into August. Maybe a few minor trades (moving Parra, Cotts, Ramirez, Lohse/Garza) but keeping the core together and going after it in the second half with a very young pitching staff. I then see said young pitching staff to run out of gas in late September and miss out on the playoffs but giving us hope for the future! Shouldn't this be in the optimism thread?
  22. Right, I think that was the biggest reason (besides money) they added the extra team. It's also why it's a sellers market this year. Basically noone in the AL is out of it. And only a couple teams in the NL. When I say I prefer competitiveness I still want to see effort and energy even if it's a loss. And don't want tons of blowouts, April was brutal this year with the blowouts so it got depressing. If they go 2-4 most weeks but don't get blown out I'm fine with it. It's also generally a sign that the young pitchers are doing at least OK if they're not getting blown out.
  23. Your line about the lineup just hit me about how this team shouldn't be so bad. Braun, Lucroy, Gomez, Lind, Davis, Ramirez should have been a good offense. Killed by injuries early, Braun struggling in April, but most importantly by Lohse and Garza being disasters this year.
  24. Braun to be healthy the rest of the year Gomez and Lucroy to hit well the rest of the year to increase value as I don't either will be dealt before the deadline. Trade any of the older guys, Parra and Lind should bring back decent prospects with a chance. Ramirez is a class act, hopefully he gets traded to a contender and does well to finish his career. Nelson, Peralta, Jungman, Fiers locked in the rotation. Lohse can go to mop up or released and if Garza keeps struggling bring up another young guy and see what happens.
  25. Thanks for the info. Backs up my opinion that prospects are usually overrated and trades for them usually don't get the return you expect, and generally the folks on this board overrate them too. The true 'can't miss' types like a Braun, Harper, Trout just don't get traded so you're taking chances. Cubs did seem to get a few of the near 'can't miss' types so we'll see how many of them work out. Of course it's an impossible argument to settle either way so thanks for the info. And yes I still agree that we should trade Gomez and Lucroy for as much as we can get, it's a numbers game so hopefully you get 6 promising guys back and 1-2 really produce. Or one of them gets back one 'can't miss'. If I recall Cleveland traded Bartolo Colon to Montreal and cleaned up in that one, I think Lee was one they got back for him. Brandon Phillips and Grady Sizemore I think too. I think Lee took a long time to pan out though.
