  1. Not to go too far off subject but I wonder why Tom Brady can essentially lie and throw a couple ball boys under the bus and not receive any crap about it. I understand those dudes did actually deflate the ball, obviously at Brady's request, but that doesn't make Brady's actions relating to them any less wienie like. and most people in the general public seem to have a shrug the shoulder mentality on it, like oh who cares its just a little air out of the ball. Yet a guy like Braun is a pariah. It's the media getting people worked up in a frenzy about MLB PED use. To me it's all hypocritical and just doesn't make sense. They really need to kill this story as it's giving constant bad PR to a great game, and at this time the game can't afford the negative press.
  2. Sorry, I don't see you saying anything other than. "no you're wrong. That medicine is ok, but this medicine is not." And again I'm fine with all those things being done, all these advances really show how everyone is willing to do whatever they can to play and play better. Just don't think it's then logical or fair to call these people the devil for using some supplements. We should just enjoy the game instead of getting all worked about stuff like PEDs. You're right though, this is irrelevant to the Braun contract stuff. my point was to take this bs out of the discussion and just focus on the game.
  3. good point monty, right in line with what I'm getting at. Guys like Jimmie Rollins were hitting 30+ homers, that isn't going to happen anymore. But I don't see anyone hollering at Rollins every time he comes to the plate. And one thing I should have mentioned in my last post. TJ or other major surgery isn't just getting people back to where the should be, where they should be is injured and unable to play (that is what is natural) and therefore they're not as good as the people who had stronger bodies and never had the major injury. That's the way it would go if people want to stick to this old school classic BS narrative that everyone should be doing it like they did in the 20s and 30s and 40s. What if Mickey Mantle had today's medicine to deal with the knee problem he got in his early years, he'd probably be the best player ever if so, by this line of thinking (that these old school people have) then no one should be able to have those surgeries to help.
  4. You're actually proving my point Crew. If all that is ok, which it is, why are is it such a big deal if someone takes some supplements. So taking a ligament from a different part of your body or from another human and inserting into your body is ok, but taking a pill that makes you produce a little more testosterone is absolutely evil and wrong.
  5. Also, every play caught in the PED scandals has initially lied about it, just like Braun. He's just the second largest profile. I mean, what was he supposed to do? He won the appeal, was he supposed to win the appeal yet come out and admit it? Also, from everything I read at the time there's still a very real chance that the mishandling is what led to such a drastically high test. Arod doing what he did with the lawsuits etc. is it's own thing. To the actual point of this thread. My take has been clear but I get the recent points about marketability and lower WAR. All true but as long as he hits respectably the next 4 years I don't think it should be considered a brutal contract. I think it's the nature of the contract structure of MLB, really anyones contract after their controlled years just will not live up to the money involved. If you want to take the stance that small market MKE just shouldn't sign anyone past their age 32ish age season that's fair. I still stand by the thumb, normal age decline, and general mld offensive decline as a bigger reason for his dip from 1.00 ops guy to 850-9 than not taking a legal supplement instead of an illegal one every once in a while. It's still TBD though, last few weeks show well. we'll see if he keeps that up or falls off again. I could see a stronger argument made that the reason for his constant injuries now as attributable to not being able to take the extra supplements. His ability to hit the ball really hard was always there.
  6. tmwiese55 said: T Contact lenses, lasic surgery, tommy john surgery, are these not performance enhancers? Simply put, no. Quote sooo, a guy goes from out of the league to still being able to play? his performance wasn't enhanced? Babe Ruth couldn't have done that. My main point is that they're not just cramming real steroids to bulk up like they were before. People going for every edge they get is nothing new, been going on since the game started. little stuff is always going to be going on and the current PEDs are no different, yet the media has whipped everyone in a frenzy about it. Also, no one cares about PEDs in other sports yet they obsess about in baseball for some damn reason. It is what it is, just enjoy life and the game.
  7. There's PED guys all over the league, they just don't get the hype that Braun and Arod get. And those are just the known people, think of how many were using these minor supplements just like the Biogen guys but didn't get caught because it's such a minor thing. I don't want to get in yet another discussion but I'd recommend giving up on obsessing about it. And I think MLB should quit obsessing over it and creating bad pub for themselves. They've put in the most stringent testing of any sport in the world, move on. Contact lenses, lasic surgery, tommy john surgery, are these not performance enhancers? Frankly, steroids saved baseball in the late 90s after the strike. Now they've drastically cleaned it up and offense is gone and everyone says baseball is boring and needs more offense. Can't win with people. Nelson Cruz is probably the worst move Melvin ever made when he threw him in that trade with TX, guy crushed AAA for like two years and we wouldn't give him a shot because he struck out too much. Then we basically roll with strike out prone HR hitting team, seemed like he would've fit perfectly in what they were doing but they wouldn't give him a shot.
  8. Have to be realistic, no way he's coming here. So many contenders have money if he were to leave LAC. Clips can offer 5 years and like 110mil, he'd be an idiot not to take that as other teams can probably only offer around 4/80ish. Three years from now when we're theoretically contenders, this would be the type of thing to get over the hump. Personally, I wouldn't want to spend 20mil on a guy who can't make a FT and therefore can't play at crunch time. Tyson Chandler money, yes, max salary, no thanks. Just realized typos in my last post in this thread, 'step up and become stars'
  9. As I said way back in all this, I'm in the camp that the thumb was more of an issue than anything else and I'm glad the last few weeks have somewhat supported that view. That being said, those who think that 3 weeks of good hitting has swung him from being absolutely untradeable to 'sell high' are delusional. 3 weeks doesn't do that. Everyone has been in wait and see mode with him and continues to be. Also, those that say 3 weeks is small sample and they're not convinced he's back. I totally get it but I could just easily make the argument that the last 2 months of last year and April this year are the true small sample size when compared to the rest of his career. Another thing people need to remember is that he's now 31/32 (natural regression) and that hitting in all of baseball has gone way down from 2012. So coming back to being an 850-900 is perfectly fine imo. Regardless, will teams be willing to pay 20 mil for that production, maybe not as most teams have realized the value in having players in their cost controlled early years unless they don't have to give much up in the trade. I still think if he has a good healthy season and finishes with something like 285/360 with 25-30 HRs that some rich team will take him. Especially an AL team that can give him some days at DH to keep fresh. Finally, 20 mil per year is a lot but 5 years from now with rapid inflation in pro sports contracts it will make it a little easier to manage come 2019.
  10. Right, they have plenty of time to put a winning team around these guys and establish a winning team here so both want to stay. If they start winning I don't see why they wouldn't stay, Parker is from Chicago so somewhat local and Giannis seems to love how the city has embraced him and his family. And if the Bucks treat him right going forward he should have some loyalty for them drafting him and bringing him over right away. First things first, they need to step and become starts.
  11. Looks the same to me as the last few years. Has probably gained 10-15 pounds since his rookie year, but what guy isn't going to gain some from age 23-31 while consistently lifting and working out. I don't see him noticeably smaller this year from the last few years. PEDs now aren't what they were in the 90s and early 00s. They were using straight up steroids back then to tack on mass and muscle. No way they can get away with that stuff these days, what they're using now is basically the same as the supplements that are legal to just stay fresh from the daily grind and nagging injuries.
  12. If the Bucks are going to be legit title contenders one of Parker and Giannis will need to be the type you're describing, possibly both of them. If they don't progress to that level, we're not winning anything anyway. Have to remember they're 20 yr olds right now. Giannis has the ballhandling and playmaking ability already, just needs to learn how to shoot and he's the guy you're talking about. It's not crazy that Giannis could be a 6'11 Westbrook type attacker. Jabari is a huge unknown after the injury. Also, there should be no fear in locking Middleton into whatever he needs right now. His deal will only be 4 years and we have no big contracts right now. Two years from now the cap will go up 40-50%, so that 13 mil he'll be getting will be what we view as like 8mil these days. When Giannis and Jabari (possibly MCW) need to get paid his deal will be coming to an end. If he's not producing or not living up to it you just let him go, if he's good, you're happy and try to win the title, even if you go over the cap.
  13. That's what's so frustrating, they had the exact player they needed in Sanders and he was signed at a reasonable 10mil cost for four more years. 15mil+ per year for Lopez, no thanks. If he gives a bargain you have to consider it, but I doubt he'll do that since this is probably his last payday because of his foot problems, and he knows it.
  14. Aldridge isn't leaving Portland for MKE. If he leaves he's going to a contender (Cle if Love leaves, San Antonio, etc.) or back home to Dallas. To me Lopez is the type of guy who will put up numbers on teams that don't win anything, doesn't hasn't have the intangibles and do the gritty things. somehow he's 7ft and gets 6 rebounds a game. Factor in huge injury risk (foot problems have historically been big problems for big men) and to me it comes down to price and/or years of the deal. If he's going to need 4/60 no way I want him. 3/30, yea why not. Also, blocks are a hugely misleading stat. Lopez is considered a brutal defender, terrible on pick/roll etc.. I think the person point regarding Parker and Giannis was that they're just going to be shooting more going forward, therefore there won't be shots left for someone like Lopez. Not saying I agree, just saying what I think he meant.
  15. Lopez is brutal on D, a poor rebounder, and more of a post up guy, not really the type we need. Plus I don't think he has much heart/fire in him. that being said he's a good offensive center and we certainly need offense so if he's not looking for a max deal and will take something reasonable it's worth considering. Could buy time to find a young guy to pair with the other young guys, and his contract would go away as Giannis and Jabari need new contracts. If they manage things properly they can get him without losing Middleton. Have to sign Lopez first, then sign Middleton and go over the cap, you can go over if you're signing your own guy. The year after they could drop back below the cap with Zaza and Mayo coming off, maybe Ersan too? And the year after that the cap will balloon up. Can be done if the owners are willing to spend this year. I suppose they could trade Ersan away to save money too. I would 100% choose Middleton over Lopez though if it comes down to it. MCW, Middleton, Giannis, Jabari, Lopez. Bench: Dudley, Mayo, Bayless, Ersan, Zaza, Henson. For sure playoff team and in the east, they could get as high #4, maybe even 3. Personally, I'd rather stay the course with a young guy rather than this strategy (which is kind of like the old Kohl way of just being happy being in the playoffs). But if he's willing to take a reasonable contract it's worth exploring.
  16. 5 games out of the wild card. You know, these guys aint so bad.
  17. Yea not a big deal. Plus lives in TX so really can't blame someone. I like the whole league and Spurs are probably my second favorite team to watch after Golden State. When they were playing that slow grind style of the mid 00s and winning titles with scores in the 80s, I can't say I was a fan of that, now their style has started a trend for the whole league to follow and it's really good for the league. Really interesting offseason for them. Can't wait for that game 7 on Saturday, should be an instant classic. As an example for bs frontrunning. I work with a guy born and raised in WI. And his teams are Packers, Red Wings, and Braves. Doesn't really follow NBA. He's about 30 yrs old so grew up as those teams were all the most consistent winners of their sports, claims he's not a frontrunner/bandwagon fan. Whatever though, each his own. Don't give up on the Bucks after one game though, if you would've watched the first 5 games of the series you wouldn't have had that take away. Make them your eastern conference team at least. Kohl regime is gone and this going in the right direction.
  18. Great ride here at the end to get some fans excited, I won't let the blowout dampen it. Stuff happens. Really surprised by it though, with how good their D had been I wouldn't think that to be possible. Just shows the difference between the upper class and the low seeds in the East edited for language
  19. Very interesting offseason coming for the Spurs. Sounds like they'll make a strong run for Aldridge as Duncan's replacement, he's from Dallas and went to Texas. Yea I chuckled at the Spurs not being a front runner, they've been a good team pretty much since Robinson got there, other than the year he got hurt which led to Duncan. Support your own, unless there's some ties to the SA area or something from parents etc.. I'd be ok with a Chandler type signing for a couple years. Team building is very different in the nba now with the restrictions to short contracts so it's tough to really plan on anyone being around for more than 4-5 years. Would fit exactly what we do on D and provide good vet leadership for the young guys. As I may have mentioned earlier, I strongly doubt he'll come here. Every contender other than Houston needs him and most have cap room. Throw in the Lakers also as an option, I'm almost sure he's from California. Chandler and Love as FAs this year to get them to respectability. He's the perfect C to play with Love. My money is on Jordan sticking with the Clips and Chandler in Dallas. Or conversely, if DJ goes to Dallas, who's the best guy to replace him with the Clips? I wouldn't want HIbbert, too slow and plodding. Rather have a guy like Mozgov, but I'd be surprised if Cle traded two firsts and won't resign him. Build through the draft another year, see how they play next year and how Parker looks and then make some decisions as lots of money comes off the books the year after.
  20. There was a share of people out there ripping Scherzer, kind of calling him a whiner, pansy, and that he knew it when he signed the contract etc.., turns out the media spun it all to drum up a story.
  21. Waiting for someone to say that in those two days off he did a quick PED cycle...
  22. Awesome to see Braun take one to left. The whole team's offense would be so much better with him close to his old self in the middle of the lineup. Segura and Lind have been solid all year. It would at least make the games watchable and have a fighting shot, with the nba playoffs I've had options to not have to watch all these beatdowns.
  23. I think the first thing he needs to fix is the chasing of the low outside slider. This wasn't a problem for him in his glory years, I just don't see why he's started to drastically fall for that pitch now. If he cuts that out, he'll start having the count in his favor again and maybe start driving the ball again. He stands really far off the plate so turning on the inside pitches should be doable if he wasn't always behind in the count. Then hopefully as time goes on the thumb injury and messed up mechanics from it will go away and he can at least be good again.
  24. good point Jericho. Well right away you have LA, NY, WAS, SF, Chicago, PHI, all as what would be considered big markets. Yea, not good for us. For those picking on Scherzer (http://www.si.com/mlb/2015/04/28/national-league-dh-max-scherzer-clarifies-comments). Gee, I wonder why athletes more and more refuse to talk to the media. I think it's plain stupid to have different rules in both leagues. It inherently puts the NL at disadvantage in intraleague and world series. I would slightly favor making it the NL way but I don't care either way, just make it the same. I accept there's no way DH is going away so they might as well just move to it in the NL already.
  25. Tplush, yes totally feasible, we'll never know. It's also feasible the scenario someone else laid out in this thread breaking down the timelines of injuries etc. We'll never know. That's just the side I would bet on. I could be wrong but I thought he counted as two strikes and the next is a lifetime ban. I thought that was part of the negotiation of his suspension, but it's been a while so I don't remember for sure I guess. Regardless, at this point he's looking at a 162 min which with his salary going up will be significant and that he'd have no chance at recovering his image/rep at all.
