  1. I thought the runner on 2nd was gimmicky going into it and wouldn't like. But at this point I'm for it, though not adamantly. Essentially it means you're on edge/excited that something could happen at all times. For me, if I'm flipping around stations and get to a baseball game and see runners on, I'll stop and watch because it's likely to have something happen. This creates that every inning of extras rather than the 'oh here we go, we could be here forever' type mindset that sets in. Or if you're actually at the game, how long do you ride it out? With the current 3TO issues and general dominance of pitching I think this leads to this being needed even more. I liked someone compromise above though, maybe 10th inning is normal and then go to this way of doing it after. I'm for DHs going back to 9 innings though, can't get behind that. You're adding an extra P as it is for the games. I'd rather let them add two spots if needed than go to 7 innings, or possibly other ideas on how to manipulate the rosters to help the pens.
  2. Brewers also seemed to use Richards a ton while they had him. One thing that popped into my head is they think he might hit a wall or fall off due to workload. He certainly was solid while he was here and helped win some games.
  3. Wiki summary of that aspect. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Fortitude#Effect . Even as bit of a WW2 nerd this was something I didn't learn until maybe 10ish years ago, so it might be new to some. Overall though, to the initial topic it is just another thing to show they did what they could to try and reduce the defense they were going to face on D Day.
  4. Yeah I think it’s going to hold him back a bit but probably still gets enough votes for manager of the year. It’ll be a slimmer victory though I bet as more and more see how truly awful he is. Considering our injuries, offense, and roster churn he was given you look at our record and conclude the manager is 'awful'. The fact they're in the spot they are is basically shocking. Every year they've been above expectations and win more games than they should have, yet we still can't get consensus the manager is good. I know people enjoy complaining and being negative, but calling Counsel an awful manager is just a flat our terrible opinion. Dude you're a veteran poster, you know that guy is sarcastic on just about every single post. lol fair enough, snuck one by me.
  5. They also had a deception going on making Germany to think they were attacking elsewhere, which seemed to work in helping limit the defenses at that spot. I'm pretty sure weather also caused a delay of one day, so even if the things mentioned above didn't work the full way they hoped they couldn't delay anymore and risk it being found and prepped for defense even more than it was. Bottom-line, unfortunately the technology and way of war at the time was at some point you just had to go head to head. Resources were also limited. It was essentially a crap or get off the pot type moment. You'd invested a lot of resources and planning into this and at some point you were gonna have to invade the 'mainland' or whatever you want to call it. They decided they couldn't pull back even though several things didn't go as they hoped. But most importantly, they did do paratroopers like suggested. Watch Band of Brothers, that's the group that show was about. But they didn't have GPS and communications to coordinate like you would now, so that's the best you could do at the time. Plus, to hold the land afterwards you needed boots on the ground like the 150K you said were sent. War back then was just done with people much more than now with the technology.
  6. Counsell has gone from innovative to cookie cutter managing.
  7. You know they’re winning as is now, though, right? After all of the offseason complaints about what they did or didn’t do? Perhaps we should learn from that and trust the people in charge to make the appropriate moves? Despite all of the complaints, they’ve more than earned the benefit of the doubt. This is pretty much the exact response I was thinking as I read through, well said. It's been several years of winning above expectations, salary, advanced metrics, etc. Yes every year we have to watch people bash the GM and Manager. Lots of things can leave us scratching our head and of course not everything works. But overall we have to trust them at this point that big pic they know what they're doing.
  8. Was thinking the same. If this plays out the way it looks having the West teams play in the WC and then play each other in round 1 and MKE gets to skip to the Mets is a huge perk. Let's hope we do well and get homefield vs Mets in such a scenario. Only negative is no homefield in NLCS, but that's more than balanced by having two of the three seemingly best teams (SF has to regress though) being eliminated before we play them. Basically, it seems a very unlikely scenario to play SD and LAD back to back. Add in this is the first time we've had more than 1 top level starting pitcher is a huge advantage over past playoff appearances too. Since it's the optimism thread. Degrom consistently has small nagging injuries, if he has one of those to finish the year (of course I don't want anything major) it helps. Just saying if he were to be out due to being somewhat injury prone its a huge help. Mets are a scrappy team though and have a lot of other guys coming back from injury that could give a big boost.
  9. Good post. Interesting FA decision he'll have, several of the big spenders wouldn't have a need. Probably can rule out both LAs, NYY, Bos, Cubs (need if Bryant leaves but it shows they're likely not spending), SD. Maybe be left with CWS, Mets, Phillies. Maybe ATL? I think Nats have their next big prospect at 3B. Most likely could be a renegotiation with STL to let them save face but he locks in more money? ETA: Stl will have Carpenter off the books after 2022, what a horrible extension that was and was kind of clear at the time. Think he had that one crazy hot streak that tricked them into thinking he wasn't washed
  10. Yea I think that's the biggest takeaway from the SF titles. If you have pitching you'll probably be in the game, at which point anything can happen if things go your way. That said, look at the staffs of WAS/LAD the last 10 years and yes they both finally got titles but it took a long time until they did. And in line with the pitching is key thing, WAS won after letting their best hitter go knowing the real key to it all is pitching.
  11. I'd assume most here are old enough to remember that for about 20-25 years the Bucks and Brewers were two of biggest laughing stocks in their sports. UW was awful in both sports until the early 90s. Essentially the Bucks had 2 good year in my life before Giannis. Heck, Packers were bad until the early 90s. Combine that with no team except the Packers has won a title in most of our lifetimes, or adult lifetimes at least. So, it's easy to see how people feel invested or frustrating it is now that they get so close but continue to come up short in usually painful ways. Basically, we've put in our time and deserve one. While also acknowledging how good it is now in that all teams are good. I try to remind younger people of how bad it used to be whenever it makes sense, not in a woe is me way but just for them appreciate what they have now. With all the brutal UW football closes losses over the years I've attended my friends and I used to say it would be better just to get beat soundly and not deal with the 'heartache'. Then 59-0 happened and we learned our lesson. Oddly, with having come across so many overly cocky type Packers fans(ages under 35ish) over the years and seeing how they act to other teams fans as if GB is just destined to be good because they're GB. They're so spoiled and have never known them other than being good. I actually look forward to them being put in their place a bit which is eventually gonna happen and likely very soon.
  12. I wanna say the two opposite field rockets yesterday were on low outside sliders, if my memory serves correctly. So that's a good sign overall and lines up with what Ballfour just said on staying back for pitch recognition. For those that missed yesterday, besides the HR and RF gap double he also had a rocket line drive to RF caught by a sliding catch by the OF.
  13. Hit a couple balls hard at least and first AB would've been a HR in almost any other park. Generally positive sign. However, I didn't see enough swings to make any guess or opinion. Most of my views before came from seeing his follow through on swing and misses. I did miss some pitches but guess it's a good thing I didn't see those today, haha. If he can just be what he was in 2020 it would be a huge boost to the O (not trying to be greedy for 2019 version).
  14. Players stopped playing every day long before COVID. In 2019 there were five guys that played all 162, in 2018 there were seven, in 2017 there were five, in 2016 there were three, in 2015 there was only one, in 2014 there were four, etc. Even picking a random season in the middle of the steroid era, 1999, there were only five guys that played all 162. This is one of the reasons I would like to see MLB reduce the number of games played. Go from 162 games to 100 games. Losing 62 games won't kill the leagues profits and if it does just add more playoff teams. I think losing 37% of the games would very significantly reduce the leagues' profits. The players would never go for it either because their salaries would also be reduced accordingly. Adding more playoff teams would help very little because half of the teams are eliminated after their first playoff series. If a team only averages 15,000 per game, they still lose 465,000 tickets, plus consessions, parking, etc... Advertising revenue would also be reduced significantly. I agree that 162 games is too much, but IMO taking it to around 150 would be ideal. --------- Especially since MLB doesn't share revenue like other sports. Small market teams really do need the attendance money since they don't get the huge TV contracts and the big markets don't share theirs with them. Yes some more playoff TV money spread out would help but not enough to cover that big of a cut. Go from 162 to like 150-155, yea is feasible.
  15. I talked to a local out there a few weeks ago who paid up all the ridiculous fees and all that for Raiders tickets primarily just to clean up on selling them to the traveling fans. He expects them to go for a huge number. The numbers he gave were unbelievable on what it cost which made me question if he'd really recoup all he put in but I don't know how primo the seats were. He seemed to just be an individual and not part of any kind of group/company but who knows, just bs'd with the guy for a few minutes. I guess in my general curiosity on Knights tickets over the years seeing worst seats in the house are $200 anything is possible for the nfl.
  16. Trying to keep to the western area so divisions don't need to be messed with the likely other option would be Portland. That and Vegas are probably the two options. I'd agree on the skepticism of baseball in a city that warm in the summer with such a small local fanbase. I'd agree with Plush that it's better than Oakland though. ETA: I suppose Austin/San Antonio too to pair up with the other TX teams. Though if done they should then move Col/AZ to AL and Sea/Angels to NL. I have no idea on how the Raiders will play out but I'm by no means as skeptical as owbc. Though I definitely see a flaw of that team being the road team is going to be filling the majority of your stadium. So yea, it 'works' in that sense but still not exactly ideal. If I'm a power broker in LV I probably hold off on MLB and make sure I'm primed and ready for the NBA whenever it happens. But, Vegas of course is likely to be a place to just go for everything it can. And NBA should be easy anyway due to the ready made stadium already done and ready to go.
  17. One thing to note is the guessed location from a couple years ago (which I think led to that discussion) has since been sold so I doubt is an option (well I suppose it could be resold). I believe it was sold to a Native American group and no reason to think they're not going to stick with casinos.
  18. Agree, wrap your arms around him and try to fix likely has more upside than whatever poor return they can get for him right now. I'd also be for him not playing games for a while and focus on mechanics first. Mashing AAA is irrelevant right now. Not like i'd rip them if they didn't go that route, they're the experts after all. But I could see the logic of a total reset of sorts, mentally and mechanically. No rush to bet back to MLB, just get it figured out.
  19. With a guy like JBJ he's trying to trust a vet to regress to the mean. Think how many people were adamant how Garcia should be benched back in April when TT was doing well. Well, that didn't hold up so well. Not saying same will happen here, but that's what CC is going with and of course the lefty righty aspect.
  20. Very surprised Huria seemingly hasn't been sent down from anything I've seen so far.
  21. Some of the hype so to speak on SD that hasn't been lived up to is Snell. Cy young type guy going to pitchers park the expectation was an ace level guy and they haven't gotten it. If he comes around that pitching looks much better. Maybe all that bashing of how TB handled him was off base and those guys know what they're doing. Darvish has been good and so has Musgrove. Bullpen is actually pretty solid and reliable too, and that's even Pomeranz being out. I'd still be pretty confident in them being 2nd best NL team. There's nothing wrong with beating up on bad teams.
  22. I'd beg to differ. First, if you're viewing at as Rodgers as an underachieving employee you're looking to move on from. Yes, those convos always happen in performance reviews, actions plans for improvement, etc. But again, yea if GB was looking at Rodgers this way I think most should realize why he would not be happy with them then. Especially with all he's done for them. But I wasn't talking about in that negative of a sense. I was looking at as a more yearly review, state of the union, career progression, type talks that any good company should be having with employees, especially long term good employees like he's been. You shouldn't just ignore these folks, you should be having proactive talks with them to make sure their career is going in a way they're happy with so they don't all of a sudden take a new job and leave you hanging. Another situation which you actually said is approaching retirement age, that's exactly where Roodgers is. You're getting close, what's the plan or what are you thinking should be a common thing to discuss with employees like that.
  23. And you know for a fact those topics weren't discussed? No, and I don't think I claimed to know for sure. Nor do you know the contrary. We're on a message board after all, should we shut down all discussion or speculation even though that's what the boards are for? But, if it were discussed and they still drafted a QB knowing his contract only had 2 years left, well, I think even you could see how that might not sit well with Rodgers. And/or if they had that discussion and they did come off more negative than the way I thought the convo should go, how that would lead him to think they planned on moving on from him. thus, here we are.
  24. They're supposed to have exit interviews with all the players every year. I don't think it would be that weird at all. It's not like you frame it as, "your 28 td 3 int (or whatever it was) is bad so we might want to move on." You frame it as your the leader of the team, HOF icon, how do you want things to go here to finish your career, what are you thinking at this point of your career, what do we need to do, how can we get a title, hows your body feeling, how long you planning on playing, etc. These are normal things to talk about that should be easy to talk about with good communications. Which i'm sure his stubbornness isn't the easiest to communicate with though either.
