Not to mention it then forces you to pitch Brandon Woodruff as the starter, a guy who wasn't bad, but got tagged more than any other Brewers starting to this point.
Should be interesting to see how long they let him pitch on short rest. If he maxes out at 4-5 innings (even scoreless) that is hardly a disaster from the Brewers perspective. Their bullpen hasn't exactly been crisp and the more we see those relievers the better chance our batters figure them out for some runs. It is less exciting if they are willing to toss Morton for 100 or 100+ pitches if he is dealing.
I am going to give my thoughts on this now so I am not one of those people 9 innings later trying to act like I knew all along we should have done differently if Lauer sucks. A) I think starting Morton today is getting too cute and over thinking it. I get the logic, you now have Morton and then Freid the last two games. However, they are in the drivers seat. Just try to win today and if not let Morton/Freid steamroll us in Game 5 if you need them both. That being said this move is a clear sign they hate their chances in a Game 5 and this decision only makes their chances in Game 5 worse if they fail to win today. Props to them for gunning for it in Game 4. B) I support starting Lauer. Dude has been incredible lately and starting Burnes on short rest just seems ill-advised when we would still have to win another game anyway. Brewers hitters have Morton's stuff in recent memory...the Braves can't say the same about Lauer.
I think it ends up pretty forgettable because it is largely returning next year and the year after. In five years I don't think we look back and pick out 2021 to reflect on this pitching staff...it will be years of dominance (hopefully).
I could see Yelich going to play in LA similar to what Braun almost did....that is about the only way I could see him leave. Not sure Yelich has the same love for playing near home though. Guessing Braun having a family is the only reason he would have done it.
One of the problems with this yearly "lets dig up some guys past from a decade ago" is we are then applying today's expectations/standards to something said 10 years ago. Ten years ago saying some of this stuff was way more common and you were not publicly stoned to your death for it. That is how I kind of felt about this situation when the first email came out. Of course now we have a whole slew of emails that some are as recent as 2018 I believe...that is getting a bit recent. Even then though, things have changed a lot in three years.
Yes, I think once one email turned into an entire slew of emails hitting on about every social topic under the Sun they were pretty much forced to fire him whether they wanted to or not. Reports are they knew about all the emails last Friday, yet he coached Sunday. It all became public and they kicked him to the curb. Had the additional emails not come out good chance he is still the coach.
Can't say I really am going to look back fondly at this years team if they can't win the NLDS. Too high of expectations coupled with an implosion to the end the regular season and at the moment has a streak of two games scoring zero runs in postseason games. I am sick of the franchise needing to hype up moments from runs that don't even make the World Series.
Here is a thought. What if Yelich rebounded enough next year to be a neutral value player. Like a .900 OPS…not MVP level good…but still really good. Does everyone trade him for salary relief or does anyone want to forget 2020-2021 and be in the contract till the end?
The extension year would be a no brainer. You could still flip him in that hypothetical for a decent return. His current contract? He is 100% not tradable. We would have to eat tens of millions just to get trade talks started.
Criticizing the drafting of a gay player, hating on the NFL hiring a woman ref, hating player for anthem protest, and other questionable language. Yup, sounds like your cookie cutter NFL fan right there.
I mean we keep getting shut out because of the players, not Haines. Some of these guys aren’t bad (Yelich/Garcia/Urias), but when facing good to great pitching they are going to be exposed quickly.
