  1. The Dodgers probably get the Brewers top dogs regardless, so it won't really matter what situation we are in. The NLDS doesn't start till Friday/Saturday. That means even the Sunday finale starter is on 4+ days rest come the start of the NLDS. I wouldn't be shocked if they line it up Burnes/Woodruff/Peralta to the end the season. Each guy would end up with about a weeks rest before they pitch. Now would those guys throw 100 pitches? Probably not. Would we put together our strongest line ups? Definitely not.
  2. The alliance is just pure garbage. Nothing was actually signed and is a verbal handshake agreement...I mean, LOL. The scheduling stuff is whatever, it wouldn't happen any time soon anyway due to the mess of TV contracts. I am sure more legitimate non conference scheduling was going to happen anyway when the playoff expands. Right now the only way to get in is going undefeated so you would be dumb to schedule tough games voluntarily. When the field expands teams like Wisconsin will be tripping over themselves to raise their SOS as it is likely a big way to sneak into an expanded field when they inevitably will never win the Big 10 for the auto bid. I wouldn't take some verbal agreement as anything real or meaningful. Good sign it will get ripped up for something different down the line.
  3. Well there was this from you...unless of course you meant that in a good way Hopefully this isn’t Avisail Garcia 2.0. Thankfully Avisail Garcia is having his good year in the year the team is playing well and is a full season. It is easy to overlook last year because we weren't really a good team and it was a shortened season. Also easy to consider the contract better when he was good to end it instead of the other way around. People always think the Kyle Lohse contract was terrible and it is only that way because he was horrid the final year and people always remember the end. If we flipped it around and Avi had the big year last year and was worthless this year, how much would that change things?
  4. Sure, but that can happen in any three game period though, that was my point. If we go get swept in our next series and they sweep whoever they play...boom, 6 game swing. Sure, it is the Reds last chance to have the 'power' to force both those outcomes...but once you consider sweeping us is incredibly unlikely it really isn't that great of a situation. I just think it is a little over glorified. The Reds either gain 3 games or they would gain 1 game. If they faced a different team they could gain 0, 1, 2, or 3 games...more opportunity for neutral or positive gains in the standings.
  5. I am always relieved to look back when people starting hyping poor hot takes and I was not one of those people. Kolton Wong really hasn't been that far off what should have been expected either. A little bump offensively from his past, but he also went to a more generous ballpark. I don't think the hot takes are poor in hind sight....I think they were bad all along. As I said at the time of the signing, we got exactly the kind of player we needed in our line up and the kind of guy people have clamored for the last 10 years.
  6. Castillo rebounded after his miserable first two months, but has a 5+ ERA in August.
  7. This holds true for pretty much every series left. Head to head is always a bit overrated in my opinion. We just don't want to find ourselves on a losing streak when the Reds are on a winning streak. I have always thought playing the other team is somewhat unbeneficial. The other team is pretty good (I would rather be playing the Pirates) and there is no way to win a series 2-1 and gain two games. If the Reds won a series against someone else and we got swept they can gain 2 games over a 3 game period. Just feels like there is less opportunity to keep pace or gain decent ground....as sweeping a team as good as the Brewers is pretty darn unlikely. I thought the Reds were going to need to really gain some ground to cut the lead before the calendar flipped, probably make it sub 5 games back. They are really running out of time to get within reasonable distance.
  8. Interesting point. Sometimes these things have a tendency to fly under the radar, believe it or not, Votto has been to the post season four times ('10,'12',13 and '20) since he broke into the major leagues in 2007 with six years between playoff appearances. Ryan Braun was in the post season five times ('08,'11, '18, '19, '20) and also went six years between playoff appearances. Maybe because the losses piled up more in the lean years in Cincinnati, but certainly over the last 15 or so years the Reds and Brewers have had just about the same number of competitive teams. I think when sports writers decide on who is in the Hall of Fame there is a significant bias against small town players, as opposed to penalizing a player for being on a bad team. The big difference though is the fact the Brewers have some postseason success and the Reds have none. They have gone 2-9 in his career and have never won a postseason series. The Brewers have gone 12-21, but have played in 3x as many games and appeared in the NLCS twice. Brewers had a few runs....the Reds are usually searching for the exit door with zero wins in hand.
  9. Alright, so it appears everyone read one sentence and decided the rest of my post didn't exist....you know, the part where I said Votto was still an easy HOFer. All I am saying is perception wise a high walk total/OBP isn't eye popping. I didn't say I thought it was not important or valuable. So lets just get that straight. It is going to matter when HOF voting time comes and his counting stats are lacking. When one of your main calling cards is walking, that is boring. Valuable, more valuable? Maybe, but getting votes isn't going to be as easy for that kind of player. If Votto traded .100 worth of OBP for .100 of slugging the guy would probably be on pace for 500 homers and this debate would have been done a few years ago. When it comes to receiving an invitation many talk about getting to certain numbers. 500 HRs, .300 BA, etc....never, in my life, have I heard a .400 OBP being a ticket into the HOF. Todd Helton may not get in and that is probably a pretty good Votto comp. Of course Helton's peak was much shorter, never won an MVP, was good in that early 2000s era, and of course the Coors bias.
  10. Fun exercise and probably fairly accurate. Though even if you assumed all these games are happening the Game 5 NLDS or Game 7 NLCS would probably throw it for a loop. Peralta would be pretty likely to find himself pitching in one of those games. Not ideal, but winner takes all games are usually a mess. Easily winning the division will be a huge help though, if we can do it. That is certainly the series I would want to set up the rotation in the best possible way.
  11. Makes me remember the Mets pitching staff back in 2015 or so. Their pitching staff was homegrown or acquired before relevancy. I just remember being jealous and having the wildest dreams we could manage into such luck.
  12. I always thought Votto was a bit overrated because he was so OBP heavy and not as much power heavy. When I think elite guys, drawing walks to have a high OPS seems like cheating. That being said stats don't lie. 4 years with an OPS over 1.000, career .303 hitter, career .417 OBP, MVP award, runner up and a 3rd place finish, three other Top 10 finishes. Even though he never had huge HR numbers his career SLG is over .500. He still has another two years on his deal to pad stats and his career WAR will likely approach 70...which is pretty HOF worthy standards. For a guy who played the field his entire career and was pretty elite start to finish he is an easy HOFer. First ballot? No...but definitely a HOFer. His biggest knock is playing for small market Cincy his entire career and they have been mostly pathetic during that span. Statistically speaking, he isn't that far behind Miggy in all honesty. Without the help of 300+ games as a DH to boot.
  13. I don't think the teams would want those guys beating each other up as their main purpose is emergency use due to injuries. Practice squads seem pretty logical for that reason. Having your emergency reserves getting beat up and injured weekly seems like the wrong idea.
  14. The QO system could go, but I really doubt that is a big issue for players. We aren't offering a QO to Garcia though, he would happily skip all the way to the bank.
  15. You can and they probably will maximize how much they all pitch. The good news is for this to even really be a problem they would have to start making it pretty deep into the postseason. There are also so many off days in the postseason and the big three are fairly interchangeable when a new series starts you wouldn't feel obligated for like Burnes has to suddenly be pushed to the front of the line on 4 days rest. Though maybe they will opt to maximize Burnes/Woodruff/Peralta, in that order. The Brewers aren't going to toss Brett Anderson out there over Burnes, because Burnes needs a 5th day of rest.
  16. [sarcasm]Don't expect anyone good. We either can't afford them or they don't want to come here. Anyone we show interest in and don't get was just using us to drive up the price for the big market. Attanasio is a big cheapskate and sits on a pile of cash.[/sarcasm]
  17. It is almost like...a guy could have a differing opinion or a differing definition of what the biggest game is.
  18. Yep. This exactly. We may end up needing a lot of runs come playoff time. Or just down the stretch even. But the Brewers have done all they can to give themselves a shot. I firmly believe they pursed Scherzer because he could provide insurance in case of injury or tiring by one or more of our studs. You don’t pursue Scherzer for “insurance”.
  19. Some of these hot takes about Woodruff are straight up “LOL”. Criticizing his last month like it hasn’t been good and we would have cried like it was our first born if we had someone like this a few years ago. His ERA coming into today was barely above 2. His ERA the last month was sub 3. Panic button hot takes for the win.
  20. Well....certainly not the 2018 NLCS It has to be the postseason though as he has a patch on both sleeves. EDIT: Or the bazillion towels in the background would be a good clue.
  21. They feel like a fringe Top 25 team to be honest, at least to open the season. They must have bullish expectations for Mertz/Berger
  22. Seems like that part was intentional. They wanted to use current colors and make it look retro. Funny we would do some current color weird thing when the NFL is finally allowing teams to have enough helmets where a retro color helmet would be legal again. Feels like this should have been something the last few years when we were basically forced to have only the yellow helmet. I guess this is better than doing the poop brown uniforms with the highlighter yellow helmet...but not by much. The Packers colors aren't really the most eye pleasing anyway, but the green and yellow being the uniforms? Yikes.
  23. So we voluntarily did a color rush uniform and made it even uglier than past versions?
  24. I would guess that honor would go to the Giants, but it depends on so much. The Brewers odds are double that of the Giants, but that is largely due to them being a 40% favorite for their division. If the Giants ended up winning their division I bet the odds would be close to even. Maybe a slight advantage to us as the models would like the Dodgers to win that WC game and then play the Giants...thus slightly hurting the Giants odds. However, if the Dodgers got bounced the Giants would look a whole lot better. They would be playing a similar team (Padres) or a severely inferior team (Reds), plus they would be the #1 seed and homefield advantage. Regardless this is probably our highest WS odds during the regular season, maybe, ever. Even the 2018 team barely cracked 10% after winning Game 1 in the NLCS.
  25. The Brewers current World Series odds (10.3%) are over 3x higher than their odds in 2018 (3.3% after Game 163).
