  1. Or assets people might be willing to give us a package of prospects for. Even if it's Kimbrel-lite, that adds to the depth int he farm system. Don't get me wrong I want K-Rod traded, but not because I want the closer role opened up. I don't see value in putting Smith or Jeffress as the closer at this point in time. Neither seems to be a guy who would be dominant and hold down the spot for many years. Both seem like candidates to rack up saves and inflate their salary past what they are worth. I think both are good in the roles they currently hold. But hey maybe I am wrong. I am sure the Brewers will try and find out.
  2. I am not too concerned with K-Rod filling the closer role to be honest. If you stick Will Smith in there it only takes one year for his salary to shoot through the roof. Why even make a move like that? Unless it is someone who is elite and can be elite for years to come all you are doing is taking a good bullpen arm and making his price tag unreasonable. Then you have John Axford, for example, who you then have to non tender and let the entire league have a shot at him. Let some free agent on a one year deal have the job. Until we are on the verge of contending keep our young valuable pitchers away from that spot. You don't need years of experience to be a great closer. If we put Will Smith or Jeremy Jeffress in there now they will be $10mil salaries in 2019.
  3. I think Houser is knocked down a bit because of the control issues and a not so solid change-up. Still I think he has great potential. As for Tyrone Taylor scouts LOVE his tools. Has the speed and arm for center while not striking out very often. Add that to a bat a lot think will develop he has nice offensive potential at a position that typically lacks it. To me he is more of a dark horse prospect. I wouldn't rate him highly, but I would still put him near the Top 10. If that bat develops we have a true hitting/fielding combo on a premium position. I am just glad we don't have a guy like Taylor Williams in our Top 10 anymore. Much better talent these days.
  4. I don't have a problem having one flyer spot in the rotation, but I don't think I could reason two with our young pitching coming up. So unless Garza or one of the other starters is traded I don't see it on a rebuilding team.
  5. We already have this it is called A,A+, AA, etc. Sure the teams themselves can't move, but it is that general system. If you are trying to say lets split up the teams into two leagues where one plays for the World Series and the other doesn't there is no way. Fan interest would plummet for half the teams. People want to watch there team play for a World Series and face the top talent. I don't want to watch the Brewers play the Phillies all the time. That would be painfully boring. Most importantly what if we are in the lesser league in 2011 and win 97 games? You are trying to tell me we don't get to play for the world series, but next year when we aren't good anymore we can?
  6. They viewed Coulter similar to Brett Lawrie when they drafted him. Poissbly a catcher, but a back up option as well. With Lawrie it was 3B and Coulter it was RF. Though it should be noted the Brewers really thought Coulter could stick at catcher. So I don't think they are as high on Coulter as they were back then. Personally for the next year or two I think he should stay in RF. By then we should have a really good idea of what our OF is going forward. If our current outfielders and the outfielders in the minors(Phillips/Clark) continue to hit well and look promising maybe you consider that move to 1B. Clint Coulter isn't a bad option at 1B anyway. He looks like he has some decent power and the ability to get on base. As long as he plays some decent defense that would be more than acceptable. Many teams struggle mightily finding a 1B so having someone only provide 1-2 WAR wouldn't be the end of the world. As long as we are getting offense from other places Coulter could be a legitimate complementing piece.
  7. Well I have heard him say countless times how great Milwaukee is and he did take two team friendly deals. I mean sure he was probably cheating at the time and probably skittish about getting caught, but hey he still signed them. Braun is such a mystery I don't even know what to think. The guy is a professional liar so who know if he loves Milwaukee or hates it with a passion. And not that Braun doesn't like winning, but he seems to me to be a guy who doesn't care about losing as long as he gets to collect his paycheck. He isn't calling us garbage to the media like Lucroy saying he wants to contend. I just get the sense that Braun would much rather prefer to just suck in Milwaukee where he is comfortable. The only place that will embrace him despite what he has done. Go somewhere else and his own fans will boo him(not all, but a reasonable number would) and it would just kick up the PED saga. To what degree I don't know.
  8. I don't think it would be a huge obstacle. He can either stay in Milwaukee and lose for the next 3 years or so or go to a competitive team while he's still a productive player. Well it is a huge issue if he isn't dying to get out. If he doesn't really care to leave and what not it becomes a major problem. I wouldn't be surprised if he flat out rejects waiving it and I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted the 2021 option picked up which would surely kill any trade offer.
  9. Oh geez lets not forget Braun now has a full(or nearly full?) no trade clause. Who knows what it would take for him to waive that. Nothing? $5mil? 2021 option exercised? Throw another obstacle into the equation.
  10. You could eat some money and still probably have a hard time finding a taker. His injury concerns are a big issue. Add that to his age and the negative stigma attached to him how cheap must he be to take that risk? You could get a solid 4.5 WAR player, but the risk is really high. If we start eating $20mil+ though we better be getting way better prospects back.
  11. Way too much control to be giving away to only get that package. Pentecost is a solid prospect, Nay is an ok prospect, and Revere has so-so value. Pentecost as the headliner is good, but I want more impact talent too. At least another one of their top prospects. Then preferably no Ben Revere.
  12. Would they want to be even more HR heavy though? I don't know... I guess I just don't really see the match for either team. I don't see the Blue Jays wanting another power hitter or wanting Garza in their rotation. I really don't see why the Brewers should be targeting Revere. Don't get me wrong I like Ben Revere. He is the kind of complementing player I would love to have on the team if we were competing. However that is not happening any time soon. If we were competing right now this would be an interesting idea. Revere plus a guy like Pentecost for them would be something to think about. It would make more sense for the Jays to trade Revere somewhere else for a starter and then come to the Brewers with Pentecost+ to try and nab Khris Davis.
  13. First off this would never happen because we have no room in our outfield. It is Braun, Santana, and Davis...unless one is traded we are not going to acquire one. Eventually one of those guys will be moved out for Phillips and only him. Getting past that and pretending the Brewers have room for Revere and actually want him I still don't see it. The Blue Jays need starters, but I think they can trade Revere for a cheaper option who is also probably better. I also do not see any reason to be throwing around half his salary either. It isn't like Garza had some horrible decline last year. It could very well have been a down year. I would just stick him in as a #5 starter and see how he does. I think he still has a good chance of turning it around. I also don't like the idea of using Will Smith to help dump Matt Garza's salary which is what that trade seems to help do.
  14. It ranks Segura above Simmons...need we really look into this stat anymore? Seems to me like it is a pretty misleading stat.
  15. Coulter is 21 and in A ball. He doesn't even need to be added to the 40-man until after next year. Any number of things could happen at the big league level and/or the guys ahead of him in the minors over the next three to four years. Actually, the soonest he could run out of options is 2020, the last guaranteed year of Braun's contract. Like I said I don't see him ever getting a true shot. As in a full season of at-bats. That is just my personal thought. I don't see a spot opening up in the next 3-4 years and by the time Braun's contract is over Trent Clark will be rolling around. Yah a lot of things can happen, but I think there are so many players over Coulter on the depth chart he has a uphill battle to ever get a OF spot with the Brewers.
  16. Thanks for the multiple answers to my previous post.... Sorry, I should've been clearer. I get the logic of turnover, competitive windows, and future flexibility. There have been multiple posts like the highlighted portion of the one above that continue to suggest that the Brewers need to get rid of salary -- or at least that it may well be in their best interests to do so -- when in reality there's no need to dump salary. We're not the Marlins or in any kind of tough financial straits. The Brewers will have plenty of flexibility and the young guys already surfacing in the bigs are helping create intrigue about the Brewers and their future path, so fan interest remains good in spite of the crappy results last year and attendance isn't in any peril of sinking to Tampa Bay levels. . . . and if it were to sink that low, there will be at least a decent degree more revenue sharing $$ coming their way to ease any fiscal pinch. I am not saying lets shed all salary. I am not saying we need to get rid of a guy like Braun at all costs to shed salary. However, when I look at K-Rod is see little to no way he increases value at this point. So what we have here is a pretty expensive player at peak value that is no part of the future. There is no need in my mind to hold onto him. It is money we need to shed because he offers nothing positive to the future. However he could add a lot of negative value with a bad year or an injury. It isn't like he is Jean Segura who is arguably not even the $3mil he will get this year. At least with Segura there is some kind of reason or upside to hold onto him. Sure we don't need to trade him to not go broke, but why is that a reason to just throw away money by keeping him?
  17. Most of his errors are throwing errors so I would assume those would be cut down. Then again a lot of those throwing errors were just dumb throws he couldn't make so maybe it doesn't change. The only way I would put Jean Segura at 2B is purely for defensive value and if we were a contending team that was well set everywhere else on the diamond. Then maybe that defensive value would be what we would prefer since the rest of the offense can pick up the slack. It would also help if we had ground ball pitchers too. We aren't in the position for that and paying Segura $3mil this year and even more in future years doesn't make a lot of sense if you ask me. Then again Alcides Escobar was just as worthless this year in the regular season and everyone thinks he is great so what do I know.
  18. Wow I missed the 27 or older requirement. Assuming it is just old prospects I think that team losses at least 120 games. What exactly is going to propel them to wins? The pitching rotation would be historically horrible, the line up would have nothing good, and the bullpen would be below average at best. The offense would be lucky to average a few runs a game. The pitching staff won't be able to win when they only score 2-3 runs a game if that. I also think(being a stat geek) that it would really mess with some historical things. I would not be surprised if in 120 games that team isn't no hit/perfect gamed multiple times. Wouldn't be a fan of pitchers getting achievements that way. I give you credit for writing that up. That is pretty crazy and technically doable somehow. It might not make sense, but interesting none the less. Now I can fantasize about a real Chicago Scrubs team.
  19. He isn't even that great at SS. A move to 2nd base would make his defense better, but it would not cover up the fact he is one of the worst offensive players in baseball. The offense is just not acceptable at any position. It would just balance out to them same value he has now. Great defense, but now at a less premium position.
  20. 1. Minor League teams would be infuriated if you take their top players that bring fans to the park. 2. If my players is going to face MLB teams why don't I just put them on my team? Maybe you are contending and want to get their feet wet when you don't have a spot for them...but even then, why? 3. Scheduling would be very hard. Teams would not appreciate the heavily shuffling of that team. The talent level would varying a lot. Probably a good team to play in September when a lot of that top talent goes to the actual MLB team. EDIT: You can disagree without being condescending.
  21. Doug Melvin, is that you? Worst possibility is you have millions of dollars tied up in a player who gives you no trade value if he flops and is taking valuable innings every 5th game away from a young pitcher who deserves a shot at showing the Brewers he can be part of the future rotation. Well I was only half serious. It would probably be more serious if we didn't have so many starting pitchers to weed through. If we didn't have that problem we could probably use a rotation spot for a flyer guy like Lincecum. Not like he would be locked up for multiple years. Could just release him and not she's too many tears if he flopped bad in the first half.
  22. Maybe it is stupid, but I would not mind them signing Tim Lincecum if his price is modest. Maybe you get lucky for half a year and flip him. If not what is the worst possibility? You have a marketable player to create some fan interest? As long as he doesn't totally flop I'd think people would have interest seeing him in a Brewers uniform. Maybe they get lucky and he throws a no hitter or something.
  23. Regardless of what people think of him and regardless of what we get back as long as we are shedding the full contract there is no reason to go into the season with him on the roster. Shedding the money alone is a job well done. If we have him going into the season and something bad happens we are stuck with at least $10mil and possibly more is we opt to pick up the 2017 option. No reason to even consider not just taking an offer for salary dump sake.
  24. The problem is the Ray Rice incident had video that was leaked to the world. It is a major reason and possibly the only reason it became such a massive deal. Before that he was looking at what, a one game suspension or something outlandish? Another problem is the K-Rod incident never played out because his girlfriend left the country and everything was just dropped after that. Not a whole lot was ever released about it and he was never charged for it.
  25. The promotions this year are so much better than previous years. Sure you have the usual bobbles and T-Shirts. But they incorporated two talking bobbles which will both be sell outs, the added all kid giveaways, and added days where kids eat free. Comparing to past years it was a big improvement. Sure two thirds of what I mentioned are of no interests to anyone on the forum, but they will bring more fans to the park. I try not to be too hard on them since I am sure market size has something to do with it. Teams like the Chicago duo have amazing promotions compared to the Brewers. If only they could improve on their season seat holder perks.
