  1. Well, I don't get much in terms of financial perks, actually mostly broken promises in that regard, but I build unmanned aircraft. So it's pretty cool knowing our stuff goes around the world on science projects. It helps with border patrol, but most fulfilling is reading e-mails from the military telling us how many bombs they avoid because of our planes. For every one that goes off, there are a lot that are caught beforehand.
  2. Sorry for the bad news. I also have never heard of anything good for bereavement fares. In Nov. I flew home for My Grandma's funeral. A co-worker lost his father-in-law at the same time. It was cheaper to book his own flight. I didn't even look into the bereavement further. Work booked me a flight through AXIOM for cheaper than I have flown between Tucson and Milwaukee for the past 5 years. I even flew on the Wed. before Thanksgiving. I don't know what you do for a job, but maybe they can book a cheaper flight on your behalf. I just cut my company a check before I took off.
  3. I want to go to one of these games, and also the Mets at Yankee's that same weekend. Unfortunately, I might have an Differential Equations exam the Monday after. I think by the time the season starts I will have a good idea if I will be required to take it or not. Any other good suggestions for getting tickets once the regular season starts?
  4. You can call me a fan of Bud as well. He's not a pretty face or a great public speaker, and I think that distorts many opinions of him. I don't think the last year of the Selig reign was just a money grab either. The team was in serious debt at that time. The only thing I pin on the Selig reign is letting Bando stay too long. They put up extra money when the park opened. They spent it on dud FA's, and attendance (revenue) plummeted with the team record. MP cost a lot more to run, and they have payments to make. The debt got bigger and bigger. We can say Bud snagged money all we want, but how many people act different in their own lives? If your personal debt is sky high, do you keep spending beyond your means just to please other people? If you are smart, you sure don't. I have also seen people break down what Bud made on the Brewers, and it was hardly a great investment. He made money, but if all he cared about was money; he shouldn't have been involved with a baseball team. There were a lot of investments that would have done much better. The tax is hardly anything to complain about either. What are sales taxes in Milwaukee? 5.6%? Where I live, it is 8.1%. The Brewers bring in a lot of money to the surrounding area. I think what is given to them by the state is well earned. You read plenty of articles of how much local revenue a sports franchise generates. How many other businesses can stack up to what the Brewers bring to WI? -Edit - haha, I had Bud as Bug
  5. I live in Tucson, so I should be able to see some. I didn't look at the schedule yet, but I hope they have more weekend games in Tucson than they did last year.
  6. I honestly don't think so. How many managers do that? If it is so wrong, why do GM's keep hiring guys with that philosophy? I pretty much feel the same way Logan does: Yost doesn't do things drastically different from other managers. Most of us just don't put other managers under a microscope. Can you really say you haven't noticed a lot of odd decisions by the opponent's manager this year as well? This team had it's rough stretch after a big lead so it looks worse. Their record isn't going to be much worse than the Cubs. The cubs started out the year in rough shape. St. Louis also started out rough, and ended rough too. Should Pinella and LaRussa be fired? If you go to their fansites after series loss to the Brewers, you'll read how Yost out managed them. Believe it or not, I have read that on Cardinals' message boards. I don't think Yost is better than LaRussa, but I think he is a ton better than many give him credit for. I still have a lot of faith in Ned. This team doesn't quit one bit. There is a ton of fire and passion in them even when things don't go their way. They didn't pack it in when they lost the star pitcher. They have played amazing all September. Win or lose, they are giving the Cubs all they can handle. IMHO, that is a credit to Yost.
  7. As much as many of us disagree with the way closers are used, why did managers change it to the way it is? If my memory is correct, the Red Sox tried changing it up a few years ago. It worked out badly, and they quickly went back to the way all teams do it. I will admit I do not fully understand why managers use bullpens the way they do. At the same time, I will admit people who are much smarter than me and have been in baseball all of their life, decided the modern way was better than the ways of the past. If there wasn't some sort of sound logic to it, I don't think every manager in baseball would adhere to the current usage of the closer. I think in the end, using a closer earlier than the "rule" ends up better on paper than reality. That's just a guess though. I won't say anyone is dumb for thinking otherwise, because I think that way sometimes too. I just keep asking myself though, "If it is so obvious to fans, why don't managers and GM's see it?"
  8. What did you disagree with? Hall Running for Jenkins? Dillion PH for Sheets? Weeks for Braun in the pitcher's spot? Mench maybe came in early for Gross, but that would have been a worse option to double switch than PH for the pitcher. He would have had to replace either Rottino or Mench(if he wasn't put in) for Hart, Hall, or Estrada. I guess I don't see how he burned up the bench unnecessarily. If he brings in Cordero, he has to bank Houston gets no runs there. A pretty tough task against a guy having a good game. If Cordero gives up runs, Ned would have had to PH for him in the bottom of the inning. (Unless he took out Hart, Hall, or Estrada.) Even if he only gives up 2 and the Brewers were still up by 1, do you let Cordero bat for himself? I think Cordero only came in early 3 this season. 1 time he blew it in the 9th, if I remember right. If it was the 9th inning I would agree, but Houston still had 4 outs to work with, 2 runners on, and the top of the line up. I think that is a lot to ask for when you knew you needed to play for more runs yourself. IMO, the pitchers spot was due up too quick to make the choice obvious. I can't think of many managers that risk losing their closer for the 9th inning. You might not agree, and I don't always either, but that is the way managers play it.
  9. I'm still in Ned's corner. I don't think he deserves to be fired any more than LaRussa or Pinella do. Each of their teams went through slides as well. I don't think you find many teams that do go a whole year without an awful stretch of results. I don't think Aquino was all that dumb of a move either. He isn't a rookie, fresh from AAA. He's a guy that has some experience as a closer! He has some good stuff when he is on. He did pretty good at AAA. I'm sure some were wondering why he wasn't brought up sooner, while other guys were worn down. I don't think Cordero is an obvious choice in that spot. Pence is a pretty good hitter. He had 2 hits off of Sheets that day (who happens to be a pretty good RHP). It's not like Cordero hasn't given up a hit all year. If Pence gets a hit off of him, runs score. Do you let Cordero hit in the bottom of the inning then, when his spot came up? I don't think people liked it when Linebrink did a few games back. There wasn't many good double switch options either. Mench and Counsel batted before the pitcher's spot. Estrada would have been an option with Rottino. Hindsight, maybe a better option. Wise and Spurling hardy offer anymore comfort than Aquino at this point either. Just because Cordero could have come in there, doesn't guarantee he would have given up any runs either. Pence is pretty good.
  10. Glad you had a great time. I went in March, and I remember it pretty pretty much like you describe it. Everything is great until that door opens. We had another guy that jumps with you shoot the video. It was priceless seeing my big smile turn to shock when they kicked open the door! I'd do it again!
  11. Geno, I'll poke the holes myself. Glad you liked the idea, but I think you interpreted some things wrong. My plan was for the current playoff format of 4 teams. A lot of people always complained that there wasn't enough of an advantage for the top team, and so many wildcards were moving on. I came up with this plan a few years ago. I kept it pretty quiet. I figured if I ever ran into Bud, I'd tell him and try to leave my mark on baseball. I posted it in a long thread on the MLB general board a year or two ago, and only a couple of people replied. One guy seemed to take offense that I was ripping on the current format and berated me. The other guy liked the idea. The farthest I would want the playoffs to expand would be 6 teams, but as I said before, I'd rather not expand the league or the playoffs. My idea was just to give the current top team a little more of an advantage over the low team. I think a problem would arise if the WC and top team are in the same division. Since they don't play each other in round one, you'd give an advantage to one division champ over another division champ. That could be argued unfair.
  12. How about the people that always sing at work? Also, maybe I was lucky to work with people that were funny at my last place, but my current job has people with the worst sense of humor I have ever seen. Nothing but pity laughs from me! I take that back one guy is actually pretty funny.
  13. Thanks for the advice so far. I think I'm going to give a laptop a shot regardless of the durability. It would be nice to hook up the computer to the TV when watching Brewer games and just loaf around on the couch! I've looked into the Macbook Pro's a little more, and they do seem pretty nice. Did you get the 15" or the 17"? I'd probably go with the 15". It is the same as my current monitor, which is big enough for me.
  14. One reason I'm a fan of baseball is because the playoffs don't allow too many teams in. A few years ago I thought what baseball needed was expanded playoffs and shorter regular season to dupe more fans into thinking their team was good. But, I'm back to appreciating the limited amount of teams that make it. I hate how many NBA teams make the playoffs. I would get no satisfaction if a 75 win Brewer team made the playoffs. One Idea I always had to give the #1 seeded team an advantage, is a best of 6 series. Best of 6? Yep, the top team needs 3 wins to move on, and the low team needs 4 wins in the first round only. I don't think the current format is bad though. The NCAA b-ball tourney and NFL only require one win to move on. At least in baseball the top team has home field advantage. I don't think my idea would ever fly to well.
  15. I currently have a desktop that is over 4 years old and starting to give more grief than is worth fixing. I'm looking to get a laptop this time around. I'm going to school for Mechanical engineering part-time, and I'd like to make this thing be useful for 4-5 years. I've been thinking about getting a Mac, because almost everyone that has one seems to love it. My roommate is the only one who kind of pushes me against it. He has one, and had a couple of minor issues. I really don't need a computer for much at this point other than watching MLB.TV, writing reports for school, internet, photos, and music. I'm not into games, so I don't need anything that special. I know as I go along in school there may be some programs that I will want to add to it. I'm not dead set on getting a Mac or another Windows computer. My roommate said his runs pretty slow when using Word and other Windows programs. His is less than a year old, so that worries me some. I'm not sure what model he has, and he won't be back for a month or so. What I'm looking for is advice from people who have recently bought a laptop, or started looking into getting one. The price shouldn't matter too much if it last the time I am hoping for. At the same time, I don't want to overpay for something that really isn't any better than something cheaper. Any help or shared experiences would be appreciated. (added tags --1992)
  16. You probably should call a few places and ask them or a doctor. They probably have been asked that question before. I don't remember it being too bad. They definitely strap you in tight, and I remember it being uncomfortable in certain areas. I remember that more than any jarring feeling from the 'chute opening.
  17. I'm one of the lame people who bought one of those last year on the 4th of July. They are hard to find, I usually couldn't find one, and when I did, it was the only one. They are great for striking up conversation with strangers and receiving free beverages!
  18. I did a tandem jump from 11,500 in March. I'd say your freefall will probably be closer to 40 seconds. It goes by so fast, even when the shoot is open. At a 120 mph it is so loud, then they pop the chute and it's perfect silence. I had to pay for mine and my girlfriends, but it was worth every penny for the jump, video, and pictures. I'm not sure every place will let you bring a disposable camera. Where I went they didn't want you to have anything in your pockets at all. I suppose it depends where you jump over. We just corkscrewed up to 11,500 above the sky diving place. If I dropped something I might have killed my girlfriend below. If you are above an empty field, they may not care if you bring a camera. I still laugh every time I watch my video. You start in such a care-free mood on the ground and on the way up, but watching my face when they kicked the door open was priceless! You will have a blast!
  19. yep, I'm wrong. They picked up his option for this season. That's probably what I was thinking of. He'll be a FA after this season..
  20. I very well could be wrong, but I thought he signed another extension. I'll look it up.
  21. Ben Sheets batting reminds me of my high school baseball career!
  22. Do you usually pursue your clients, or do they come to you looking for an agent?
  23. Yeah, really short answers, but that's o-kay. It's good to see that he's doing some community service. He seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulders.
  24. All the snow in Denver!!!! Flight got cancelled to come home for X-mas. Booked another less convienent, more expensive one to replace it though. Beats a few hours ago, when I thought I had no chance to make it back. oh-well, I'll still get there.
  25. Does anyone else think the reason Melvin may have mentioned LF for Hall was only b/c of their desire to acquire Roberts or Pierre? Now that they are gone, maybe Melvin doesn't feel too bad about Hall in CF. I know I wouldn't. I think he's our best option for CF next season. I wouldn't cry if we shifted Jenkins back to left, Hall in CF, and Hart in RF. I think that would be a pretty good defensive OF.
