  1. Talks for DeGrom and Syndergaard have gone nowhere - but the talks between the Brewers and Mets have been extensive, so Stearns knows who they like - so perhaps Steven Matz?
  2. I can't see that being done unless Attanasio wanted it, and stuck his nose in - $25M per season is a lot to take on and that doesn't seem to me (being the Stearns expert that I am) like a move that Stearns would make by choice.
  3. Knowing the Mets, that likely means the asking price for Wheeler is something like: 1B-Jesus Aguilar 2B-Keston Hiura RHP-Corbin Burnes RHP-Freddy Peralta OF-Corey Ray And they will include Wilmer Flores along with Wheeler to make the Brewers feel like they got a real bargain. If that's the asking price, counter with: 1B-Ryan Braun 2B-Eric Sogard LHP-Wade Miley RHP-Tim Dillard OF-Keon Broxton and tell them that they can keep Wilmer Flores, to make the Mets feel like they got a real bargain.
  4. Because the see his value dropping fast if they don't trade him now? I hope that Stearns stays out of this one.
  5. You might be right. I really, really hope that you aren't.
  6. Well, with the Moustakas trade, unless Shaw is also dealt then I think it's safe to call talk on trading for Schoop dead...
  7. I hope not. Agreed. If Dozier and Moustakas go elsewhere (which seems very possible, if not likely), then you have holes to fill at two or three (if Arcia doesn't start hitting) infield positions in the offseason...
  8. I see an option, but it may be a mutual option. Mutual at $15M, $1M buyout. Yeah, somehow I get the feeling that he'll test his worth on the open market. https://www.mlb.com/news/mike-moustakas-traded-to-brewers/c-287727850
  9. OK - someone convince me that this makes sense...? Can Shaw play a good 2B? I just have this feeling that Stearns has no regard for any players he wasn't responsible for bringing in... Come on, someone cheer me up about this rental...
  10. Yikes. I'm not a fan, but what can you do?
  11. Ditto on not liking the trade for a variety of reasons, but losing games when they've lead after 6 innings has not been a problem for this team. And there are going to be days where you are getting blown out and it's just fine to use Drake/Logan/etc. I just think there was zero need to get fatter in the bullpen right now. They need an impact bat or two and a SP that can project as somewhere between ACE and #3. If they go out and get a Ray Durham type, I'll lose my mind. As fun as trading is, I wish they would have just stood pat with their resources this year. They really failed to capitalize on their start for the 2nd year in a row and make a move in early July to push the envelope, a la Sabathia. Instead, they sat on their hands and allowed a horrible losing streak, more than likely, cause a repeat of 2017 and a complete miss of the playoffs. I've read this novel too many times as a Brewers fan. I'll be shocked if they get an impact bat and a worthy SP to go along with Soria. If they don't, I don't see the point in Soria. I think that we all agree that this team is heavily dependent on that bullpen right now. The cost of an upgrade in the rotation may be prohibitive, so that dependency may very well continue for the remainder of the season. It's easy to say "losing games when they've lead after 6 innings has not been a problem for this team", but if (for instance) Hader gets an injury, this quality depth in the bullpen (that you consider a luxury) would suddenly look like a really great thing to have...
  12. It's hard (for me) to find fault with this trade. A quick glance at Baseball reference shows that Soria has a career ERA of 2.84, has a good K/BB ratio, doesn't give up a ton of home runs and has been outstanding this season. Add in that he's likely not "just a rental" (with the team option and the fact that the Sox are sending cash along with him) and that makes him an even more appealing acquisition. As for the cost, well, Madeiros is a good (long-term) acquisition for the Sox but the Brewers have several young starters ranked ahead of him (in the minors as well as already at the MLB level) so, while the cost isn't cheap, they could afford to take the chance and part with him. My apologies if anyone has already speculated this, but I was talking this over with a friend at work and the thought occurred to me - what if the person he's actually going to replace in the bullpen is actually Corbin Burnes? It seems highly likely that the price for a starting pitcher on the trade market is extremely high, perhaps higher than Stearns is willing to pay, and Counsell stated this week that Burnes will enter Spring Training next year as a starter. Is it possible that Burnes will be given a shot in the rotation now, and remaining trade chips used on a bat? I wouldn't mind seeing that, if you can't get a good starter for a reasonable price...
  13. I'm sorry, but I don't want a two-pitch starter, whose ERA is rising and strikeout rate - while still impressive - is down. How many years do we have to listen to how his peripherals indicate that he's an ace, when his results indicate otherwise? 500+ innings in the past three seasons (so far) and apart from the strikeouts/walks, he just hasn't produced as expected and it may never happen...
  14. But we would still have to worry about a 2B and at least one starting pitcher if this were to happen. I'm not sure this kind of a trade puts us any more ahead of where we would be if we just hang onto Hiura, our 2B of the future, and Woodruff, who just really needs to be part of our rotation now! Kind of like robbing Peter to pay Paul, or something like that. If you make that deal, you would have to follow up with a Dozier trade and, more than likely, try to re-sign him in the off-season. A future lineup with Realmuto and Dozier looks rather nice. Problem I have is there is little left in the system to trade for a TOR SP. I think that the point of keeping Burnes and Peralta out of such trade discussions is because those who insist on keeping them (observation there, not judgement) feel that those pitchers could become TOR starters. Again, I'm not agreeing or disagreeing - that's just my interpretation of what I've been reading here over the past few weeks - please feel free to correct me if I'm misunderstanding...
  15. I fully agree. In fact, I would argue that it was smart for more reasons than have already been mentioned. It's the ninth inning, and you're down by seven. You have two choices - give up and go home (in which case you're cheating the fans) or try to win the game. If you choose to do the latter, you need one thing first and foremost - baserunners. Sisco did exactly what was needed by getting on base and he did it in a perfectly fair and legal way. Why do baserunners bother taking second on "fielders indifference"? Because they still want to win the game and think that it might help their team. This happens all the time and no-one complains. In this case, they left third base unattended and he hit it there. Dozier was just embarrassed and, now that he's made a fool of himself to unbiased fans everywhere, he's too embarrassed to admit it.
  16. The problem may be that his market has expanded, as teams who were waiting on Arrieta to decide (and thought that they were in with a real chance) have now switched focus to Cobb as the "best option remaining"... who knows - it may actually spark a bidding war where one didn't exist before. Conversely, since Cobb was likened more to Lynn than to Arrieta, it's possible that he's only receiving one-year offers and he's holding out in hopes someone will break and give him a multi-year deal. Also possible. We have no way to know right now. I was just throwing out a perfectly reasonable explanation to the curiousity expressed.

  18. You seem like a decent fellow. I hate to die. Sorry, but I just couldn't leave that line out there hanging like that... Good heavens, are you still trying to win? You've got an overdeveloped sense of vengeance, that's going to get you in trouble someday. I just want you to feel you’re doing well. I hate for people to die embarrassed.
  19. [sarcasm]Must be talking about Herb Kohl... oh... wait...[/sarcasm]
  20. Wasn't that what I said...?
  21. To be fair, HH19 does sometimes express opinion, and I suspect that's what this is. This deal makes it harder for the Jays to stay in the race so, if that's true, the Jays may be more willing to sell at the deadline.
  22. Perhaps the Angels are giving him another chance?
  23. If you can get a true #1 like Stroman right now, not that I think that they can but just for the sake of debate, why wait? You lose half a season of quality starts and control and he may become harder to get at the deadline: - The Jays may be in the thick of a division/WC race - The competition may get stiffer as teams find themselves in the race but a pitcher short (due to injury or someone having a bad year) - They might up the asking price as they think you're more desperate or more teams come sniffing around - Some of your current commodities may decrease in value (that sword cuts both ways but it's still a risk) If you really had a chance to get him now, and again I don't think that it could really happen, then I think you make the move. Stroman and Cobb (I refuse to talk Arrieta in the Cobb thread) coming could alter the landscape in the NL...
  24. Sure. If Arrieta is at his best (which is questionable due to the Cubs seemingly lukewarm attempts to resign him) and if he is willing to sign for only $4.5M aav more than Cobb (which, with Boras as his agent, may not be the case). But honestly I'm not sure that either of those are true. Of course, the Brewers' FO may think differently about the first of those...
