  1. Turbo, I feel you are both correct and incorrect. Yes, Nottingham is waiting in the wings but it is not a lock that he will be the answer behind the plate. IMHO it is more likely that multiple guys from Burnes/ Woodruff/ Peralta/ Ortiz/ Supak succeed on the mound than Nottingham behind the plate. Yes, the cost to acquire JT would be high, almost prohibitive and it makes little sense to do so if Nottingham can be 'the guy'. But if Nottingham isn't the answer and internally there is little else, the choice is to stand pat (undesirable), pay the high cost (also undesirable) or find another trade target..
  2. The Marlins are holding out for a heck of a lot more than that (part in bold above). Heck each time the Nationals inquired this offseason, the Marlins were steadfast in wanting Victor Robles as part of the return. It might not cost the Brewers 2 of Burnes/ Peralta/ Woodruff, but a package for JT starts with 1 of them and likely includes 1 of Hiura/ Lutz (creating a 2 for 1 deal) or Erceg plus another significant 3rd piece. While I agree with you I would not want to give up that much, if I really see JT as a needed piece for 2018 and beyond, I will need to make a hard choice (pay the price for JT or stay with what I have OR find another trade target)..
  3. Albers has a role in which he is generally successful. That role is not as a closer. DStearns has made very few mistakes since taking over as GM, but one of them is not finding/ acquiring a solid safety net for the bullpen this season if Knebel was injured or regressed (& ineffective).
  4. I believe I saw Hellweg is closing games for AAA Indy Indians (Pirates affiliate) this year... They opened at home against the Columbus Clippers...
  5. IIRC the unwritten rule is against bunting to break up a non-no in the final 3 innings (last third of the game). The game hasn't reached that point & its only a 1-0 score. Getting on base to get into position to score is still expected. Only Dozier & some of the Twins would be bellyaching at this point.
  6. Thank you for noting how the weather has impacted the last 3 games. Before any deal is made, I could see the Tribe switching Greg Allen & Bradley Zimmer for at least a few weeks and I doubt that switch happens before April 20 (at the earliest). The AL Central is not as competitive as the NL Central this season so the Tribe has some time to work thru internal options before having to look outside its organization.
  7. Absolutely. Well stated. I get the sense that if Domingo was dealt, Brewer fans would feel underwhelmed by the return
  8. I have to to think Jeffress as he has extended closer experience in the majors (compared to the other options). Albers finished games on occasion in Washington last season (getting 2 saves) & Cleveland but that was more the mop up finishing. Yes, the last pitcher going out there but it was not to slam a door & secure a win for his club.
  9. Whelp.... time to start utilizing that depth.... Have to believe someone has already gotten a call in CS/ Biloxi to get to MKE ASAP and be ready to pitch in the game on Friday 4/6/18...
  10. Its back to the day that he went on the 10 day DL. Think I read on MLBTR that was March 25. Either way, its just before June before being eligible for activation. All that said, Nelson can still start a 30 day rehab assignment while on the 60 day DL... EDIT: I just went & reviewed MLBTR again. I guess I was recalling a different person with a 3/25 DL date, hence the strikethrough...
  11. Wow. Kinda of surprised the 3rd base coach didn't send the runner after Domingo botched picking it up...
  12. Any chance your stuck in a blackout area?? That would happen in the past if I wanted to watch the Tribe (while in Eau Claire) vs the Twins or Brewers..
  13. While Holland is now immune from the QO, I would not be surprised if Holland pitches well during the 1st half that the Cardinals approach him around the all star break with a 2 or 3 year deal (in order to minimize the loss of draft pick & other monies). Holland would then be in a very interesting situation - sign a deal & get some security (likely for less then what MIGHT happen on the open market) & remove the uncertainty of the market or decline the deal and try the market again. While Holland will not have a QO to deal with, there will be some better relievers getting to the free agent relief market (as well as other big FA names) after the 2018 season. Among the relievers he would be going against in the market: Cody Allen, Andrew Miller, Dellin Betances, David Robertson, Craig Kimbrel, & Jeurys Familia https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/12/2018-19-mlb-free-agents.html
  14. I wouldn't sleep on any of the prospects the Marlins brought back in deals this winter. The trades of Gordon & Stanton were more about shedding money although 1 or 2 useful pieces also came in return. The trades of Ozuna & Yelich brought back more young talent to build around, including a new face of franchise in local boy Brinson.
  15. That is a good way to look at it... Hold back on the expectations and be thrilled if/when those expectations are surpassed. Personally I think the rebuild (even if 2018 is the last year of it) has been cut dangerously short. The club had all of 2 top 10 picks & only 1 was in top 5 (at #5) during this rebuild. Yes last year was exciting and fun to follow but it also cost the Brewers another bite at the top 10 draft pick apple. My fingers are crossed that DS and his team have done a better job than people realize stocking the farm at the lower levels so once the Brewers are truly competitive again it is not for a short window of 3 or 4 years but rather a sustained "St. Louis" type of run - year in, year out for a decade plus...
  16. Thanks for the heads up. I thought all games would be free today but guess not. Good way to spend some time until Tribe opens up in Seattle late tonight..
  17. 4 years sounds about right. Big key will be what they get back for JT and then how they fill the catching position and then add to the pitching staff...
  18. 2018 Brewers Season Predictions Win-Loss Record: 80-82 (3rd place in division) Predicted NL Central Standings: Chicago Cubs, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Cincy. Playoffs (Yes, No): No Highest Playoff Level Achieved: None All Star Game Representative(s): Yelich, Cain Offensive Player of the Year: Yelich Pitcher of the Year: Hader - Pitches well enough (and with others regressing/ having set backs) he gets 3 starts in Sept when team is out of WC race. Team announces his move to rotation in 2019 (a la Chris Sale). Most Surprising Player: Chacin - posts .500 record with limited run support and being a victim of multiple bullpen/ closer implosions Most Disappointing Player: Knebel - regresses to point that he is removed from closing. Late innings become roller coaster ride every night. *Note: Highest playoff level achieved could be “None”, “Wild Card”, “NLDS”, “NLCS”, “World Series”, “WS Champions”
  19. I can't see either of those trades actually happening. Both are weighted way too far in the Brewers favor.. BTW - Adames is a consensus top 40 prospect. Throw out Prospect 361 and he is consensus top 30. Unless the Rays are getting Burnes AND Hiura in return, I see no reason for them to part with Adames in a deal at this time. To get Archer & Adames would strip mine the rest of the Brewers farm system - no thanks.
  20. The Yankees could always slide over Neil Walker to 1B and use any number of internal options that 2B while Walker holds down 1B. I highly doubt the Yanks make a deal let alone a significant 1 where they give up young pitching...
  21. Agreed. This makes me questions Heymans report. Couldn't the Brewers have offered him arbitration next year? I think you mean offer him a Qualifying Offer next season. Answer is no. With the new CBA, players can only get 1 QO during their career. If you truly meant arbitration, then he would still be 'controlled' by Tampa & unable to sign as a free agent this off season.
  22. I agree with this. If the team didn't want to get stuck in a long term deal at this time for one of those pitchers - so be it. There are consequences as the rotation is questionable, but that's how things go. I was wondering where to link this bleacher report article.. I think it would fit here... http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2765696-mlb-position-power-rankings-2018-brs-top-30-starting-pitchers No Brewer - Nelson, Anderson, etc made the top 30 as an individual SP. I will be interesting to compare/ contrast the position rankings for SP once Fangraphs gets there. I'd like to think the Brewers have a top 15 starting staff. Not so sure at this point and without a top 10 rotation, I think serious playoff contention (even the Wild Card) is doubtful. A LOT of things broke the right way for the Brewers last season. Unlikely all that happens again..
  23. Yeah, what gives? I even logged into Brewerfan.net at 9pm during the heat of the Hot Stove season to get his inside info! The next thing you're going to tell me is he was just some crazy right-winged nut-job troll? Ding! Ding! Winner! Winner! Chicken Dinner!!
