  1. It should be Gomez's to lose, you never straight up give up on a 25 year old, def one with the tangables he has. He was given center field last year and he was horrible. Horrible. So horrible he probably should have been demoted. That was his third full year in the majors. His career batting average is .246 and his career OBP is .293. You can talk about ceiling all you want, but if you are going to talk about you also have to talk about the likelihood of him actually reaching it. Manny Parra has a high ceiling too but at some point you need to realize he is still closer to his floor than he is to his ceiling. Why should he continue to be given opportunities based on potential as opposed to actual results? Beside, nobody is saying "give" Schafer anything. All I asked was if he is the reason Melvin hasn't tried to upgrade center field? Trust me, if Schafer's results after three season mirror Gomez's then I'll be calling for an upgrade over him as well.
  2. I wonder if Logan Schafer is the reason Melvin wasn't more aggressive in getting a center fielder. There was a post in another thread about center field being "Gomez's to lose". Well in my opinion he already lost it. My only guess is that Melvin hopes Schafer can pull a Cain and be Milwaukee's center fielder by July.
  3. I have a bunch of DVD's that I would like to sell, I'm just not sure there is a market for them with all of today's technology. I wouldn't be asking more than $2 or $3 for them, and they all come in the original case and are in excellent condition. I don't want to waste my time posting all the movies I would be looking to sell before determining if there is any market for them. What does everyone think? Would craig's list be a better option?
  4. I just hope the Brewers make the right moves to sustain this. Even though their system may be the "worst" right now, it's not anything I am especially concerned about. However, if it doesn't improve a lot and fast (as in within two years) then I will be concerned. We can't have any Evan Fredericksons, Cody Adams, or Seth Lintzs in the next two drafts. And Melvin has to make the right decisions, particularly on Weeks and Marcum. I think Fielder is gone and that is fine. But what do you do with that money? You have to try to extend Greinke. I'd go as high as $20 million a year for 5 years. But if doesn't re-sign, you have to at least re-sign Marcum. And a decision has to be made on Weeks. If you re-sign him, you have a very good offensive player that will help the team, but you have less money to re-sign Greinke and/or Marcum. If he walks, you'll get two more picks in the 2012 draft (along with the two for Fielder) and could possibly have 6 picks before round 3, but you may not have a suitable replacement and losing him and Fielder at the same time would have a huge impact on the offense. So a lot of very important decisions have to be made within the next two years, and Melvin doesn't have the luxury of a good farm system to fall back on in case he fouls up the decisions. Either way, I'm just gonna watch this year a very good pitching staff and hope things work out well.
  5. Just curious guys, but IF Dylan Covey had signed, knowing what you know about him, where do you think he'd be on that list. Also, is there ANY chance Eric Farris can handle shortstop?
  6. Well, $19 million a year is still a lot of money. I suppose it would depend on the total length of the contract. 5 or 6 years? If we replace Fielder internally with Gamel, the $100 million to extend Greinke would basically be the money we were going to give to Prince. I personally would rather have Greinke for five years than Fielder so I'd be ok with that. The money to extend Marcum could come from money saved when Wolf's contract expires. Something is going to have to give though. You can't let Marcum, Greinke, and Wolf all leave in free agency during the same off season.
  7. Unless Prince is a mercenary solely out for the money and looking for the highest offer No offense to Prince, but I think he is solely out for the money. Well, not solely, but I think it's the major decision maker with all else meaning significantly less. I could see him ending up in Baltimore. They have a talented young rotation and a lot of offensive pieces either in or coming into their primes. That being said, Boston will probably be looking to replace Ortiz so that might be a possibility as well.
  8. With the Brewers going all in for this year though I wouldn't even think about it. Adam Jones would be an upgrade at a key position. The closer role could be filled by any number of guys. If Jones for Axford was offered I'd take it in a heartbeat.
  9. Don't you think this thread is getting a little nitpicky? As TLB said, I don't think the majority, if any, of the rosters in the MLB could say they have enough depth where if the right person got hurt, it wouldn't significantly hamper them. There is a difference between having guys on the bench who aren't as good as the starter and having guys on the bench who probably shouldn't be in the major leagues. In the past we've been able to say "well if player x goes down at least we have player z to replace him"....or "at least we can call up player z from the minors". We don't have any of that this season. Craig Counsell is our best bench player as is stands. You aren't concerned about that? And Milwaukee doesn't even really have anyone who should be considered a starter in center field, let alone a decent back up. Like Ennder said, it's not just if "the right person" gets hurt....it's if anyone gets hurt.
  10. Let's also hope that someone signs Trevor Hoffman to get us that extra pick.
  11. I can't believe they were number 30 before the trade, but the losses of Jeffress, Lawrie and Odorizzi certainly made things worse. Plus they didn't sign their #1 pick last year. At least they still have some decent pitchers who are relatively close.
  12. Milwaukee's top three starters automatically make them a post season candidate, but is anyone else concerned with their depth this year? I'm not just talking about pitching, but position players too. I can't remember the last time that the rotation has basically been set in December. That's both a good thing, because you have guys good enough to know they will be in the rotation, but it's also a bad thing because it means you don't have an overabundance of guys good enough to start. This is why I was really hoping Capuano would re-sign with Milwaukee. If there is a significant injury early on in the season, who starts? Parra? Or do you have to call up Rivas or Rogers right away? It's not that I don't think Rogers or Rivas are capable, but I'd prefer them to get more experience in AAA. Also, looking at the other thread with roster projections, a bench of Counsell, Boggs, Cruz, Dickerson and Nieves doesn't exactly excite me. If someone like Weeks or Hart goes down for a significant amount of time, we may be screwed. We already have black holes in the lineup in center field and shortstop and terrible defense all around. As much as I'd like to proclaim the Brewers division favorites, it seems like they still have a ton of holes and not a lot of in-house options to fix it.
  13. Yeah I think in the order of importance you need to extend Greinke, Marcum, then Weeks. I still believe pitching gets you into the playoffs and I believe our best shot at sustained success with be those three resigned. They will eventually be supplemented by the likes of Rogers, Rivas, Peralta, and Heckathorn too, which could make for some really good teams.
  14. I for one do not understand why Chris was not given a shot to win the 5th spot. Competition makes everyone better. I do not mean any offense whatsoever to Chris Narveson. but I don't think he should have been handed a rotation spot. I wish Chris Capuano the best and I really respect him for all the hard work he put in to come back from not one but two TJ surgerys. I am sure he will land on his feet somewhere but hopefully it is not somewhere where he can beat the Brewers!
  15. I am strongly in favor of the "best player available" approach to the draft, as opposed to drafting for need, but sometimes it works out in both cases (drafting Braun when they needed a third basemen). That being said, Milwaukee could really use a high ceiling shortstop in their system. With those two early picks, are there any shortstops that would be good enough to be drafted that early but not so good they will be gone by the time Milwaukee picks? If they could get a shortstop and another starting pitcher with these picks I would be thrilled.
  16. Boy you really have to hope Milwaukee can avoid injuries this year. The Brewers bench looks awfully thin.
  17. I actually thought he would have a good chance to be the number five starter. It was basically down to him and Narveson. So the rotation is pretty much set then, unless Many Parra has a really impressive spring.
  18. Was there any thought to adding Rob Wooten? He was doing pretty well before his TJ Surgery. Or does he have to get back to pitching to prove his worth again?
  19. I know a lot of people probably don't like this idea, but I actually wouldn't mind. First and foremost, it would finally get Weeks out of the lead-off spot. You could then bat Weeks either second or sixth, with Corey Hart taking the other spot. Defensively it would be a drop off from Gomez but offensively he would probably be an upgrade. His OBP is ok, but I'm sure it would be better than either Gomez or Dickerson could put up. I'd say maybe offer him a one year deal with a team option for 2012 to see how Schaeffer, Gindl, and Komatsu do.
  20. I know this sounds dumb but I think he'd be more valuable to Milwaukee signing with another team and allowing the Brewers to get another draft pick at the end of round one. He wants to be a closer and Milwaukee won't give him that opportunity, nor should they.
  21. Is it a possibility that all of them start out in Huntsville? Gindl's numbers all seem to drop off last year so another year in AA may not hurt. I'd like to see those power numbers go back up. Hopefully one of them can have a breakout year ala Lorenzo Cain and be ready to start 2012 in Milwaukee as the center fielder.
  22. It's pretty sad how far Salome has fallen. He or Lucroy could have been included in the Greinke trade.
  23. if everyone of our pitchers fulfilled their projections/ceilings, we would end up with one Gallardo quality pitcher (Rogers) and 5-7 Parra and Narveson types I don't agree with this. I think Peralta and Heckathorn could both top out as a number three. Even Rivas maybe. Scarpetta could be a solid starter as well. Milwaukee really needs to extend Marcum or Greinke, and hopefully both, because as long as they have solid major league starting pitchers they can build their system quicker because they won't be forced to trade prospects for pitchers. So as weird as this is to say, I think if we can sign either Marcum or Greinke long term, our system looks better. Also, Milwaukee really needs to start drafting the highest ceiling players regardless of age and position. I feel like the past few years they've drafted a lot mid ceiling college pitchers with the expectation that they go through the system quicker. They cannot mess up on either of their two top fifteen picks next season, and hopefully somebody signs Hoffman to get us that extra pick. These next two drafts are going to be HUGE in terms of restocking the system. If they can resign Marcum and/or Greinke and hit a home run in the next two drafts (with the possibly of 6-8 picks before the second round, depending on who the lose and who signs them) they will be in a very good position.
  24. I agree with the consensus that this is not worth the money. I'm actually hoping the #5 starter is Capuano. I think Milwaukee should sign another solid bullpen arm. I don't want them to put too much stock in the one successful year Loe has had and I certainly don't want a bad bullpen to ruin good seasons for the Big Three starters. I would like them to sign another veteran relief pitcher, preferably someone with postseason and closer experience.
  25. It's about time for Gallardo to get one. Maybe Latroy Hawkins since they seem to like to make ones of players in their final year. A McGehee would be good too.
