  1. Going to need to open up one more spot for both Giant pitchers to go on the 40-man. Any chance Chacin is done?
  2. SABR has an interesting article regarding the chances of a drafted player making MLB. What the sixteen year study tended to say about the first five rounds was college position players are always the safest bet followed by college pitchers in the first couple of rounds and high school pitchers in rounds three through five. The Brewers had some success going this route with Braun, Weeks, Sheets, Nelson, Lucroy, and now Hiura. The team also struggled greatly in rounds 4-15 only really hitting on Hall, Brantley, K. Davis, and Hart. The 2019 Brewers draft shows promise if the study has any merit to it.
  3. Who does everyone think is the most likely Brewer to be traded? My guess would be Corey Ray (unless he is hurt again as he hasn't played in a few games). Cain and Yelich are likely in Milwaukee for multiple more years and it would seem that the team could pick between Grisham and Ray to be Braun's eventual replacement. I don't know if either of them would gain in value sitting at AAA for two more years. Arcia would be my "sleeper" pick, but only if the Brewers see Dubon as more than a future utility player.
  4. If you look at the results of the last couple of years, you may consider standing pat. Swarzak really helped down the stretch in 2017, but Jeffress and Moose put up better stats the year after they were acquired. Last year the team was improved at the end of August, but the end of July was a bust. Villar probably outperformed Moose in August and September and Schoop was a disaster.
  5. Could just be coming up to take Woodruff's spot as his rotation spot is a number of days away?
  6. Other than the 158 innings in 2016, he hasn't thrown more than 125 innings in a season. Just saying 190-200 innings plus possible playoffs may have been a stretch.
  7. With his past innings, was it unrealistic to think he would pitch 200+ innings this year?
  8. Without a lot of top end minor leaguers in 2019, it will likely take some "luck" for the Brewers to compete and maybe a "value trade" or two. Maybe Nelson comes up and takes Chacin's spot when healthy and the Brewers send an "okay" prospect or two (maybe player(s) they are not planning to add to the 40-man this summer) for Freddy Galvis and Daniel Hudson taking Jackson and Arcia's spots. Galvis should come cheap as he is just a placeholder for Bo Bichette and Hudson is a pure rental with little consistent track record.
  9. If the team moves from a "hold" to a "sell", could it be possible that Jeffress is traded away for a third time? I agree with the idea that Yelich, Woodruff, Hader, and Hiura are values most likely not to be dealt. Teams always want relief pitching.
  10. 2018 was great and the 2019 Brewers are contending for another division championship, but is the team closer to a rebuild than contending for a World Series title? 2019 team stats show a team that is roughly average hitting, pitching, and fielding. The team had five all stars and two of them have mutual options at the end of the year. Is the team willing to pay for Thames and Anderson to stay next year?
  11. The year before Verlander was traded he was runner up for the Cy Young. I would hesitate to give much up for Bumgarner as he has been on a slow decline the last few years (a lot because of injury). I would go less than the Cubs went for Hamels. Cashner would be a better rental IMO.
  12. If you were DJ, which (talent-wise) pitching staff would you want to coach? When Chase Anderson is your highest paid starter, you are probably going to get average starts. IMO this is an average (talent) team that probably overachieved some last year.
  13. With Yelich batting leadoff, any chance he doesn't see the outfield?
  14. If Holt signs for what was reported and Floyd and Gillis sign without going above slot, it should leave roughly $500K to offer someone like Rustad or Torres. Since Austin just now reaffirmed his commitment to Alabama, I am thinking all the money is spent or enough of it to make Austin reaffirm.
  15. Considering three of his eight "hitters" (Aguilar, Cain, and Shaw) are having very down years and your top two starters are Davies and Woodruff, Counsell may be doing an even better managing job this year. DJ was definitely a big loss, but we have seen improvements in Albers, Davies, Hader, Woodruff, and even Guerra. Jeffress is unfortunately pitching more like he has when he hasn't been in Milwaukee, Aguilar may be a one-year wonder, and Cain is probably somewhere between this year and last going forward.
  16. If this move upsets the Latin players, hold on tight as Aguilar and Pina may not be far behind. Pina has now dropped below .150
  17. You cannot undervalue this "day". Mlb.com recently did an article that had each team's highest current international prospect. All but two teams had one in their top eight and all but four teams had one in their top five. The Brewers top one currently checks in at #18, but they do have five teenagers between #18 and #24. Hopefully this is an area that the Brewers under the direction of Mike Groopman are improving in. Hopefully the international bonus pools have leveled the playing fields, as previously some of the big market teams have been able to dominate the market and then use the talented international players on the field or via trade.
  18. Holt will likely be overslot. Hamilton, despite the injury, may also go overslot, as he could likely get a redshirt year and come back to Texas as a redshirt junior. I would think Dillard, Bennett, Floyd, and Gillis sign without taking more of the current roughly $1M to go overslot. The question is will there be enough left to get one of the high school shortstops or Rustad.
  19. If you add in the 5% teams can go overslot, I wouldn't think they would have any problem signing their top 18.
  20. After Hiura, who will be the next minor league player to arrive in Milwaukee? One that hasn't already been up before.
  21. Eighteen months later the stats don't look much better...since Lucroy was drafted in 2007 the highest WAR by a Brewers draft pick for the Brewers is by Scooter at 5.0 before he was released. The Brewers have done a great job making trades over the last few years to make them competitive, but in the long run I am guessing Johnson/Flanagan need to be more successful then some of their predecessors. Turning Gomez, Fiers, and J. Lopez into Hader, Houser, Moustakas, and Gamel has created a level of success (as well as the Yelich trade).
  22. The Brewers have done very well with trades as they have struggled in the realm of "draft and develop" over the last decade. It is difficult to say if the fault lies in the drafting or the developing, but Seid's drafting record does not look good. From a pitching standpoint, the Brewers have always struggled. Jack Z. hit on a couple with Sheets and Gallardo, otherwise you probably have to go back to a scout named Ray Poitevint during the Harry Dalton days who signed Higuera and drafted Bosio and Wegman.
  23. The next week or two is going to be interesting to see what happens with Shaw, Aguilar, Hiura, and Burnes. They are all not helping this team. Shaw could go down and play first base in SA and get his swing back, Aguilar would likely be picked up by someone. Maybe Freitas or someone comes up and Burch Smith?
  24. It is interesting to see that the Brewers have already signed more picks this year than last, with probably 6-8 more to sign. This year's draft looked like a traditional "Moneyball" draft.
  25. Niebla seems very deserving of a position and is with a team that operates similarly to the Brewers. I would say "no" to Bosio and would probably only consider Nieves for the bullpen position.
