    There is no financial advantage to go back for the senior season. Would likely be a "slot" signing unless the Brewers "pushed him down". At this point, I would say Fischer and Ebel may be around 75% slot, but after that everyone may be around slot. Episcope is a 4YR sophomore, but his age and injury history may take away all of that leverage.

    Priester already has 0.9 WAR for the Brewers, which is a good trade for pick #33. Many draft picks (even as high as #33) don't even make it to the majors (and I say that being someone that really likes the mlb draft).

    Based on draft history of the Brewers, I would expect that they be near 75% of slot on their first two picks allowing them to take a couple of bigger swings today.

    Kohn kind of gives a Russell Smith vibe (which isn't at bad thing) at pick number 68.

    Renz would be a nice day three sign. Definitely has day two talent.

    To put that WAR in perspective, ten (10) years from now a 2.2 career WAR would probably rank in the top 10-15 players in the draft class.

    Sterling signing for just over $2.5 kind of sets the upper end for the Brewers two high school pitchers. Patience is always needed and we aren't expects just because we read some rankings. Justin Chambers (20th rounder) last year seemed to get a lot of money, but has already paid off with 2.2 WAR via trade.

    If Levonas does not sign, one could question why they didn't go Dasan Hill, but the sun will still come up tomorrow with plenty of money to use on the day three picks and a comp pick in '25.

    Langhorne is an intriguing (likely bullpen ) arm.

    Players change their minds. I would guess the Brewers thought in 2021 that Riggio would sign with them for likely seven-figures. He did not and they shifted their money to other day three picks. Riggio then got a contract for just under $700,000 from the NYY last year. It is part of the reason that you take 'flyers' on day three so you can spend the money.

    Dasan Hill getting $2 million is right about in line of where we would think the top 2 high school pitchers for the Brewers will get. Going forward, I could see the Brewers doing what they did for Payne every year - finding their top rated player that they can get signed for 75% of their top pick's value and signing them up. (that is if the vast majority of combine participants do the physical)

    With Payne's deal done, you would expect to hear about many more in the coming days. That domino needed to fall first. Brewers obviously saw Payne as a top 25 talent, so it will be exciting to see how he develops in the system.

    Interesting to hear Tod Johnson say they were not confident Payne makes it to 34.

    Late first round price makes sense as Tod Johnson made a comment about them seeing Payne in the mix at the end of the first round.

    Other than one year, this is been their international signing model.

    The zig/zag comment may be the most accurate...as the rest of the league is selecting less and less high school kids, the Brewers have headed in the other direction the last two years.

    Very true, but very different from the 2020-2022 drafts.

    With the Brewers having a somewhat non-typical draft for them, does this simply mean they 'follow their board'? Obviously it isn't that simple with the financial juggling that many teams do on the draft days.

    They usually leave very little money on the board (including using the 5% overage).

    Like many MLB drafts, you need to withhold initial judgement until at least August 1st. There were definitely some lottery tickets today, but they must feel really good about signing the day one picks, as we didn't see any $2 million HS pitcher 'backup plans' taken today.

    The 9th and 10th round picks are interesting as the Brewers don't tend to go HS there. So either they have a lot of money to spend and/or they thought the high schoolers they were interested in and could be signed were running out fast.

    The 11th rounder (and sometimes 12th and 13th rounds) is usually a 'big swing' that the Brewers have confidence they can sign. Later 'big swings' on the day are usually Plan B options. Sometimes it works (last year) and sometimes it doesn't (Riggio).

    Only the Brewers know where they are at financially after these first two selections.
