  1. ...and the fact they have not had success over the last handful of years taking third basemen towards the top of the draft (they have taken a half dozen or so). They may be betting on a shortstop outgrowing the middle infield and/or an outfielder getting moved to first. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Brewers target college pitching in the first couple of rounds this year. I could see a draft similar to their 2019 draft.
  2. The switch to twenty rounds for the draft makes a lot of sense for the Brewers as over the last fifty years the team has Fiers, Breslow, and Suter to show for their hours spent drafting beyond the 20th round. Looking forward to seeing the Brewers add more talent to their farm system with the 10th-highest draft pool in 2021.
  3. Most candidates tend to request their names be confidential and likely only "finalists" must be announced. With the posting for the assistant openings closing on the 2nd of April, I have to think Moseley will be interviewing candidates at the final four. Until then (or more specifically through 3/31) I am guessing she is spending a lot of time recruiting as the "contact period" ends at the end of March for quite a few months. Can have players "on campus" April 9-11. Her best player at BU and 4-year starter at PG just entered the grad transfer portal today...maybe?
  4. Good luck Coach Moseley on the recruiting trail and the court.
  5. It is going to be interesting to see what Kyle Fuller gets for a contract. One could argue with his last couple of years, a team may be able to get him for a deal similar to Desmond King's, but it only takes one team to overpay.
  6. Everyone wants to compare Watt to Reggie White or Peppers. I will put Calais Campbell out there as a current comp. Even if GB could get Watt to agree to a Campbell-like contract, I am not sure if they could fit him in. Obviously COVID has changed the cap, but for those that like to lead the "let's go all in" parade, the current cap situation shows GB has been doing that more than you think. Give the team some credit, they hit on a some of the free agents (Z. Smith, Amos, etc.) and created some contracts for P. Smith, Kirksey, Lowry, etc. that they can get out of if production does not justify.
  7. I think it interesting listening to people say the Buccaneers are champions because of who they brought in after Brady. One of the main reasons TB is Super Bowl champions is the job Jason Licht and co. have done the first two days of the draft the last handful of years. If you were wondering "Walter" gave the Licht (GM) extension an "F" grade.
  8. I will give "Walter" credit that they gave the LaFleur hire an "A", but the same offseason gave the Hackett hire a "C+" and the Gase hire an "A+". Only time will tell. Chances are right now Barry won't be as bad as "Packer fans" think at this time and Evero or Harris or someone else probably won't be as good initially as a DC as "Packer fans" think at this time. Soon "fans" will be moving on to being upset about who doesn't come back or the upcoming draft. If LaFleur and co. are using analytics in the front office as much as he is on the field, it would be hard to imagine them giving a soon-to-be 30 y/o center with a history of back concerns a long-term contract or a running back entering his age-27 season the standard 4 year / $50 million contract that other backs are getting. "Going for it" may be putting the franchise tag on Jones and having him play on the one-year deal!
  9. One of the keys to the Rams success this year was not giving up "Explosive Plays" on defense. This is an area Pettine's defense improved greatly from 2019 to 2020. Staley's defense (and Fangio's in Denver) plays heavy zone with initial two-deep looks, but often shifting to cover-3 or cover-4. Similar to Pettine's defense, Staley preferred to go "light in the box", but one the differences is Staley tended to do it with larger personnel (linebackers instead of dbs).
  10. Joe Barry was not "my choice", but I will keep the hope and try not to judge despite the past with two years in Detroit with Shaun Rogers probably being the best player (for only one year) and two years in Washington with your two best players probably being Kerrigan and maybe Will Compton. The "cupboard" is definitely fuller than he has had as a coordinator...that is what my hope is in for him.
  11. Hoping the lack of news (from the Packers) today is because they would like to meet next week with one of the DL coaches in the Super Bowl. I would say both are potentially stronger candidates than the DL coaches they have already interviewed. Both defenses in the Super Bowl are also very "blitz heavy", which seems like a direction LaFleur may want to take?
  12. I personally prefer Evero over Barry and don't know if if either are my top choice with Leonhard no longer an option. If LaFleur does pick Barry, it won't be because he doesn't have a large number of references to check with - McVay, Phillips, Olivadotti, etc. Staley must also think fairly highly of Barry as he chose him over Evero and Pleasant to follow him to the Chargers as passing game coordinator.
  13. Bob Bostad would not surprise me either...he has been successful in whatever position he has coached at UW.
  14. If Leonhard gets the GB job, it will be interesting what route UW goes to replace him. Maybe they would promote April (seven years in the Ryan/Leonhard system) and bring back someone like Fenelus to coach the DBs.
  15. Since Leonhard reportedly interviewed with the Rams last year and the Packers this year, you would think he is definitely considering moving back to the NFL. From a long-term financial standpoint, he would likely need to move up to the NFL head coaching level as Chryst makes within a million/year of LaFleur. I would expect Leonhard would be in line to replace Chryst when he retires, maybe 4-5 years. I am confident with Leonhard's NFL playing background and the four years of dominating defenses at UW that he could do the job in GB, especially since he does run a similar system and has a connection with Gray. If not Leonhard, I would lean towards one of the first-time coordinators, but don't know which one at this point. Evero and Barry have been passed over twice by McVay, Burke would have been passed over in Philadelphia and is currently unemployed, and Kiffin and Nielsen haven't been considered by many at this point, but Nielsen is probably a Dennis Allen head coaching hire away from being a coordinator.
  16. Interesting to see (it appears) many of the cuts were getting rid of developmental coaches. Otherwise Joppie (2020 WI) and a few rookie-level hitting and pitching coaches seem like the likely cuts. Nice "promotions" for Burgos and Stanley both moving from AZ to WI and Childs moving from Carolina to AA Biloxi. On the flipside, Dabney appears to have moved from AAA to low-A in a two-year period of time.
  17. International Signing Day is a very important day every year. Hopefully the efforts led by Mike Groopman over the last few years will pay off in a number of years not only in developing major league players, but also trade chips for the organization. The Brewers organization has definitely put the $$ into the process over the last couple of years. Congratulations to the newest members of the Brewers organization!
  18. House is very similar to Turang in that he was very highly thought of during his junior year and is fading a little in scouts' eyes.
  19. We are probably 3-4 weeks away from the announcement of the 2021 Brewers minor league coaching staffs. With the decrease in affiliates, it will be interesting to see how the staffs line up. Will Rick Sweet return to add to his impressive minor league win total (11th all time in minor league managerial wins)? If Sweet does not return, does the team simply move Guerrero, Ayrault, and Erickson up a level and name a new Mudcats manager (Joppie or Liu Rodriguez would be logical internal hires)? Both Guerrero and Sweet have been previous managers of the Nashville ballclub (as was Charlie Greene).
  20. I have to think the recent trades by SD make it more likely for the LAD to pull off a Hader trade, not the SDP.
  21. It will be interesting to see if Ray Montgomery is "replaced". It wouldn't surprise me if Ray leaving the organization shifts them even farther to "analytical" drafting, as Montgomery was known for liking the physical attributes of young athletes.
  22. Adding four more top 50s continues the Brewers consistent additions on the international market. Adding up to a handful of top 50s compared to one big prize (G. Lara) seems to be working better in recent years.
  23. Besides facilities, Nashville is a great fit as it is one of only 4-5 AAA cities with direct flights to Milwaukee.
  24. The Marlins connection between Pensacola and Beloit is they are owned by the same person. Replacing San Antonio with Nashville gives the Brewers one of the best AAA/AA facility combinations in all of baseball. A great day for Tom Flanagan and co.
  25. I was never a big Gregg Williams fan, but have been critical of Pettine in the past. With that said, I have been impressed this year with the improvement in not allowing as many "big plays". I think coming into the Eagles game the Packers were third in fewest "big plays" given up. After the second return touchdown of the year, Pettine would not be my "coach on the hot seat" on the staff, though.
