  1. Given that we cannot trust what the team says about injuries anymore, I'll believe Jimmy Nelson will pitch this year when he pitches this year. Soreness in elbow not good especially since the second time this spring he’s had soreness. Last time used excuse of slipping off the mound. Boy oh boy! This year gonna sure see what stearns and co are made of. What’s the saying when the going gets tough the tough get going Huh? They didn't have Nelson last year and did just fine. Even without Knebel I think this team is better going into the regular season than last years team.
  2. He didn’t throw for 6 weeks cause of hammy I don't care what he reason was, he wasn't over used is the point.
  3. A sore elbow today after his outing yesterday is not a good sign.
  4. Not sure I'm buying that. I'd trade Knebel for those two straight up right now. Having said that, I do agree that there may be a bit of an overreaction to losing Knebel. I get what you're saying.
  5. To that point, Knebel only threw 55 innings last year. Hader threw fewer innings than he did the year before. Jeffress threw 11 more innings than he did he year before. I'm not seeing a ton of over usage.
  6. If they were going to get Kimbrel, it would have happened by now.
  7. Well, except the Knebel thing. That kinda makes us worse.
  8. No idea why people are counting on Nelson.

  10. I heard Steve Phillips talking about this a week or so ago and insurance for baseball players is almost never purchased because it is almost never worth it. For instance, you can by insurance on Kimbrel but any part of him that has ever been injured would be excluded from the policy. There was a bunch of other stuff as well but having insurance doesn't seem to help much.
  11. The more I think about it the more I'm OK wtih Kimbrel on a one year deal but nothing more. I might be able to be talked into two years but no way am I paying a closer that kind of money for anything close to long term.
  12. I'm inclined to think we've reached that point except for that one guy that makes me question my instincts.
  13. He's a Spanish language multimedia Red Sox reporter. I don't know why he'd be making things up. That was my thought. He seems to be in a position where making things up would be detrimental. He seems pretty sure.
  14. Is this Nilson Pepen guy legit?
  15. Hey, worked on the playstation.
  16. This has all the earmarks of a two year injury. One year of "let's try to rehab this" and another year after he actually has TJ surgery. Reality is we just wait and see what he second opinion is but I'm considering him out for the year unless I'm told otherwise.
  17. Problem with that logic is if the bullpen is our strength, and you remove 2 of the 3 best ones, yes, that could easily derail an entire season. Especially to a team that uses it's bullpen the way we do. You can't minimize the importance of our bullpen, even if you want to. You make two assumptions. The first is that the bullpen is the strength. I think the rotation is potentially significantly improved this year and that become more likely as all three youngsters are in the rotation and every time Nelson steps on the mound is encouraging. I also think the offense is significantly improved (and deeper) that the start of last year. The second assumption is that the pen is going to be used the same way. I think having more quality options (theoretically) in the rotation will change how we use the pen. I think the way it was used last year was a product of the starting options we have.
  18. Take Saladino off the list and add two catchers and you have your 25 men though they have already said Anderson will be in the pen so you can probably take Spangenberg off the list too.
  19. This was the final straw for you? I guess my earlier opinions didn’t litter the board with overreactions after all. No, they did.
  20. This was the final straw for you?
  21. This is what I think is actually going to happen. They won't sign him but will acquire some kind of value fill-in guy and he'll end up contributing way more than people are anticipating. A Jesse Chavez type thing. May depend on how they feel about Jeffress. I think they kicked the tires on Kimbrel as a "it won't hurt to see" type of discussion that got blown up. However, if Jeffress is really broken then Kimbrell may be more serious.
  22. I'm kinda thinking they stand pat. I feel like a deal would have been done before the news broke if it were gonna get done. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm not feeling Kimbrel.
  23. Woodruff would have been interesting as a closer.
  24. I guess Petricka has closed before.
  25. The pen is less effective with him as closer, absolutely. His effectiveness does not change at all though. He's still going to wreck hitters whether it's 1 inning at a time or 2-3 innings at a time. I think we are using "effectiveness" in two different contexts. Being able to decide when Hader come into the game is far more effective than saving him for traditional closer duties. I think Guerra gets first crack if they don't bring in someone else.
