Shaw has played with a very sick daughter. This excuse is pretty questionable because there is nothing to back up his personal life effects his play that much. Last year when his daughter had her open heart surgery he OPS’d 1.000 before/after. The month after he had an OPS also of 1.000. I’m not trying to take away with how unfortunate the situation is. It’s terrible and surely effects him. However, using it to explain a dip in performance this year is a stretch. While he has struggled at times he still has a 114 OPS+ just slightly lowered than last years 120 OPS+ mark. I wonder if the injury is bothering him, but hard to know not being Shaw himself or the medical staff. If it was bugging him that much I’d think a DL trip would have happened long ago. But who knows. I never meant it as an excuse. I meant it as a description of a ballplayer who has played through a lot of things and right now he is playing hurt IMO because that is what he does. He's tough.
