  1. People have been spoiled by how good the offense is. Hart would be the cleanup hitter on a third of the teams in MLB.
  2. NYC had lots of luck lowering serious crime by focusing on parking tickets and minor offenses. Cops in the area have an impact on other things, it chases criminals elsewhere, it makes it easier to report a crime, and it builds trust. You can't just ignore minor stuff and focus on big stuff, it doesn't work that way. Proof of that is after years of being on the FBI most wanted list, that scumbag abortion clinic bomber (Rudolph?) was caught by a graveyard shift cop as he looked through a dumpster looking for food. Good police work caught him, while years of having a dozen agents assigned to him did not. You can read about NYC's success here, Rudy G and a new outlook get and deserve most of the credit. If you can't get rid of graffiti and broken windows, you're not going to have any luck with major crime, as those things are obvious signs that the police have lost. That's why the abandoned warehouses and factories visible from 94 in Milwaukee, and to a lesser extent, Mpls, are such a big deal No one looking to open a business is going to look at those areas twice, because they know they are neighborhoods with little police presence. Even on SVU last night, they were bragging how quick their lab is, and that they have no backlog. If you never do the test, you can't catch the stupid scum who left evidence, and they'll keep offending. No idea if it's true about the real NYC, but it makes perfect sense. Van Hollen ran on this for AG also, and has lowered the wait, though it's still far too long.
  3. As pointed out, BOS or NYY can afford to take a $5M risk on Webb, the Crew can't, not based on one inning in instructionals. If the Crew can risk $5M, I promise you NYY can gamble $10M.
  4. I don't see Cappy getting $5M based on 10 good starts or so. I'd say $2-2.5M is fair. However, if he could put togetehr 175 IP with a similar ERA, he might get that 3y/$15M deal. That's why I said he might be plenty happy just taking one year and hoping to sign a last multi-year deal.
  5. Sal Torres? Jason Kendall? Jeff D'Amico did pitch for PIT, but I can't believe he won 15 games with one of those crappy teams.
  6. I agree, I'd send him a text, and if he bites, ask him to meet you at a corner with the $20 you owe him. If he shows, call the cops and have them meet you there. It'd be like a private eye show.
  7. Cappy will get plenty of offers, and might convince someone to give him 2 years. However, if he can have a 30 start season, he could get a 3y/$15M offer easily, so he may not be looking for anything longer than 2011.
  8. He has two options actually, and Doug loves him as much as I do. With Cain being unproven and certainly not above slumping, not to mention with similar stats, I think Carlos returns. I think he'll make it too. He's below average offensively, but so fast and solid in CF, he's still valuable.
  9. If the Dodgers get $45M, $20M for the Crew is more than fair.
  10. Surely Tyler Thornburg will be in A ball or higher. Also, don't they have DH's all the time in A and A+?
  11. Plenty of teams would trade for Gomez, but his return would be slight, especially in pre-arby talent. Coffey will likely get $2.5M+ in arby, so not many teams would deal for him. CV will probably get half that or a bit more, so he's more likely to be kept. Plus CV has an option, Coffey does not.
  12. That seems way high, to say the least.
  13. Does he really have a curve and a slider, and a fastball and a split? Watching, it just looked like he was throwing 2 pitches. The pitch they called a split I figured was a fastball he took a little off of (89) to hit his location, as it was right on the outside corner.
  14. 10 runs below average equals a game using the Rule of 10. The problem is, many act like it's causing the ERA to be a half-run higher, which would equal a -81, of course. Defense is overrated, as pitching plus defense is 50% of the game. Many games, there's little more than a plethora of routine plays, but every single game, the pitching is important, ask that rookie who threw BP tonight in the 7th inning. Actually, Prince will soon be gone, and suddenly, the infield defense is average. I won't be giddy about that improvement, however, as whoever replaces him will be fortunate not to be far worse offensively than 10 runs.
  15. They are 20th overall. Fangraphs does not list INF, just by position and team, so the work involved in adding up all teams 1b/2B/SS/3B is more than I care to do.
  16. The Brewers infielders are -10.2 runs using UZR thus far in 2010. Those that continue to complain about the infield defense are ignoring the metrics and/or just not paying attention.
  17. The Brewers sign guys or deal them. The only reason they would not is if they felt the 2 picks were worth more. History will repeat itself.
  18. Much like Hart, if he's not signed to an extension, he'll be dealt.
  19. They were the best in the league, so the players were fine. At that level, most guys are just roster filler. Even in Appleton, there are a couple true prospects, 3-4 that have a chance, and the rest are just hoping something clicks. That's another reason teams don't give up on Rogers and the like...guys that throw 100 are few and far between.
  20. I think he has a 3 year deal. They could pay him to run the system if a manager has a Duncan like relationship with a coach, but I assume he'll stay as part of the agreement.
  21. His ERA is 3.88 for the season if you leave out that 12 run game where he ate innings because the bullpen was tired. That game still counts, but you can only lose it once. He's a solid SP, who has been less effective versus LH bats than usual. If he stays healthy, I feel very good about him for '11. He and George have a nice relationship too. It was painful watching Lucroy have to visit the mound a couple times every inning.
  22. Cheez, instructionals are just that, teaching young players finer points of the game. Stats are barely kept, it's all about the kids getting reps and learning their trade.
  23. Even the plain college-aged girls (women) are stunning. Women do not age well, but the late teens to mid 20's is a glorious time. Heck, ask Bill Maher.
  24. I would agree. He hit a ton of ground balls through holes LY. I would bet he's had more GIDP this year too, because of this.
  25. Rogers averaged less than 5 innings a start, in AA, and would have to be shut down about August 1st if he did manage 6-7 IP/S an outing. I'd let him begin at AAA as a SP and look to use him in middle relief in the bigs if he does well. If he throws strikes, he can certainly be up a good part of the season.
