  1. His best position is as a team's 6th/7th SP, which means he's a long man or in AAA. He has no options, so if the Crew keeps him, it'll have to be in the 'pen. He might well put together a nice career, and a couple 12 win seasons. Some say LH's develop late, and he might be a late bloomer. He's had some very good games, albeit through 6 frames. He'd be a guy I'd chase if I were the Pirates or Orioles, decent enough to get by for now, but as of yet, has not hit his full potential. Some guys never do.
  2. You can usually negotiate your agent's price down a bit, if you need to, especially if it's a relatively easy sale. That said, after you pay someone to do the p-work and the buyer's agent, you come out what, $2K ahead?
  3. If Farris can only play 2B, his value is very limited. The only player I can recall that had a career as a 2B who did not start was Keith Lockhart. If he's able to play SS/3B/OF, or even one of those, he suddenly is on my radar. However, with rare exception, 2B in the minors are there for a reason, usually lack of arm/range, or both. For example, Ron Belliard was moved from SS to 2B in A ball, and has never played SS to speak of since. For now, he's a smaller guy, bats RH, never walks, little pop, who apparently runs fast. I bet you can go through and find a dozen AAA 2B that fit that exact mold, as that's where guys that can't play SS/3B end up if they can hit. He's 24, so he's not young for his level. A guy like Jay Canizaro, who I saw play for the Twins, might be a good comparison, though Jay had oodles more power. Good AAA player, got a few chances in the bigs. Farris' AAA stats look like Tony Gwynn Jr's, so his offense will be minimal.
  4. Zoo. Be prepared to spend 2/3rd's of the game at the play area and eating. A hike at a beach or state park would be fun for many kids too.
  5. As a true FA, he'll probably get about 75% of his slot, despite injuries. $1.5M would be my guess, and it would not surprise me for him to get more. It only takes one team with extra cash on hand or a positive injury report to get him far more than you'd think.
  6. He can't be offered arby, so he's a FA. However, his injury risk as a 36 year-old, especially as a Japanese pitcher (he likely threw tons of pitches as a young man) is very high. And, as all top FA SP's do, he'll get more money than he should, and at least an extra year, maybe two. I could easily see him getting 3y/$42M, and when you add in a buyout, it's probably just about $15M per. That's a huge risk for a smaller market.
  7. They have nearly exact OPS's, and both are very good defenders. Gomez is 3 years younger and has a better arm, and seems faster. Carlos, easy.
  8. Hobson getting PT in the D-League and being called up if injuries hit would be great. Gallon will hopefully agree to play in Europe, as the Bucks then keep his rights.
  9. He's hit that mythical wall corner OF's in their early-mid 30's usually do. Gamel at $400K seems like a better deal to me.
  10. Looks like he might be a nice 4th OF someday. More walks than K's too.
  11. I saw him next to Waldo at Hooters the other day.
  12. I also attended the Rattlers' game Monday, and my write-up can be found here. Scooter is a man among boys.my write-up can be found here.
  13. Middle relievers throw 2-3 innings all the time. It is not anymore difficult to throw the 8th and 9th than it is the 6th and 7th. In fact, many would argue a 2 inning outing is far easier and less taxing than 2 1 inning outings, especially back-to-back. Now, if they would ask Axford to get 6 outs tomorrow, I'd agree. He might well get the day off regardless, or at most, just pitch one frame. The team is off Thursday, Macha did a fine job of using the schedule to his advantage. Heck, if Hoffman would not have struggled so in April and May and duplicated his 2009, and Hawkins had not had shoulder issues, Axford might well be pitching the 6th, 7th, and 8th regularly, likely in 3-7 out stretches. Add in Braddock and Loe, it may have been one of the better bullpens the Crew has ever had. Thus the difficulty in predicting reliever effectiveness, which amounts to a bunch of small samples.
  14. I can't take golf (the PGA) seriously because they insist everyone wears pants in 105 degree heat. The sport's popularity has gone down a lot in the past few years, some argue Tiger made it cool for a bit of a false peak, others argue it is because of its "rich man's game" reputation. I do not even know what grounding your club is, but such ticky tack stuff is not going to make the game appeal to regular Joes, to be certain. The fact they get so excited over enforcing such crap is rather headshaking. I remember years ago, some golfer climbed into the woods, and his club hit a piece of grass or stick which touched the ball, and he came out and told everyone and it counted as a stroke. This was called great sportsmanship, but I thought it was just stupid. Lighten up.
  15. Gamel may well be taking advantage of an opponent challenging him at every opportunity. Assists are a direct result of chances.
  16. Plenty of teams would have interest, as Parra has "stuff", but no one is going to give you much for his stats the past two years.
  17. If you compare him to other elite defensive CF's, his numbers are right in the ballpark. Gomez still has a future in the bigs, though if Cain does well, it may not be in MIL.
  18. Horribly small sample on top, and Parra throws as hard as anyone not named Yo or Axford. He is inconsistent and loses focus.
  19. No more than $1M can change hands without MLB approval. They have no problem granting it in a trade for a veteran who may be released if not dealt, but paying most of Prince's salary and getting a top prospect or two would be akin to selling a player, which they have disallowed in the past. TB has always built through the draft, so no idea if they would have interest in a rental anyway.
  20. Given his past results and inability to lay off the breaking ball, he seems like a good bet to dominate AAA, as most AAA pitchers simply can't throw strikes consistently with anything but heat.
  21. Need to put a retractable roof over that golf course. Cost and common sense aside, that would be mighty cool.
  22. One thing I'd recommend is to ask each of your friends to not waste money on something stupid like a T-shirt or gag gift that says "30" on it somewhere, and to donate $30 (or more) to a favorite charity of yours or theirs. We were invited to a housewarming party soon after 9/11 and the host asked to please not get him anything, to give money to those who could use it. That's how I learned about NYPFWCBF, which was started by Rusty Staub, and is now imitated all over the US. I remember my dad-in-law was shocked at how much crap he got for his 50th b-day, and wished folks would have spent their money on a gift card for everyone to go out to eat, or something that wasn't, in his words, "crap no one will ever use".
  23. I dunno if MLB would allow $10M in a deal like this...you never see it. TB can't afford Prince's deal next year.
  24. Crim was listed at 6-0, but he was not a hard thrower, so it did not make much difference. McClendon, being a ground ball guy, likely does not throw that hard either. Macha suggested he hides the ball well.
  25. What will happen is likely this...Prince is dealt for a SP and a prospect, Gamel replacing him offensively. Another SP comes in somehow, FA perhaps. The lineup stays mostly the same, the bench may well include many of the same faces. I think it will be interesting to see where Lawrie ends up. He could be ready mid-2011, which could allow a 2B/3B/OF to be dealt.
