  1. The Padres are more likely to trade Victor Caratini or Austin Nola, than Campusano. Probably Caratini has they are now in the luxury tax with their acquisition of Manaea; Caratini has a 2 million dollar contract for this season and is likely third on the depth chart behind Alfaro and Nola.
  2. The timing is really unfortunate. The White Sox just traded Zack Collins last week to the Blue Jays for Reese McGuire who is out of options. The Sox also have out Selby Zavala who is also out of options. Obviously both McGuire and Zavala are behind Grandal. From the Brewers perspective, Collins would have been a better get due to pedigree and options, but the Sox could very well dump Zavala or McGuire later today.
  3. Thought this was an April Fool’s joke at first. They already had Holt once and released him because he sucked. He hasn’t gone out and proved them wrong, so I can’t believe there would be any interest in a reunion
  4. I agree, he made a number of quality 7 inning starts for Detroit last year, before scuffling in June and going on the DL for two months. More importantly, I think we tend to forget some of the players who from year to year provide "length" out of the Brewers bullpen and are not used in later inning roles: Hoby Milner: 5.40 era, 1.52 whip, 5.89 FIP over 21.2 innings Daniel Norris: 6.64 era, 1.57 whip, 6.81 FIP over 20.1 innings Eric Yardley 6.75era 1.82 whip, 6.81 FIP over 18.1 innings Angel Perdomo: 6.35era 1.64 whip, 6.11 FIP over 17 innings Josh Lindblom: 9.72 era, 1.98 whip, 7.37 FIP over 16.2 innings That's 93 innings of really bad pitching. With Urena I'm sure the floor isn't much worse than a 1.50 whip and a FIP of 5.00, which would be better than they got in the 93 innings above and the ceiling could be much higher. Its the kind of low cost, no risk move the Brewers should make more of.
  5. Makes sense. Get some length out of him for a month and see what they have when rosters go down to 26 players.
  6. Does the new CBA give these type of players an automatic opt out date? I can't imagine Urena will stick around in the minor leagues very long because he has had some success in the majors as a starting pitcher. Even last year he made a series of quality starts for the Tigers earlier in the year before scuffling into June, going on the DL and missing nearly all of July and August. There will always be a need in the major leagues for depth guys to come in and make a few starts.
  7. Did Montreal build a new baseball stadium? Even assuming fan interest has rebounded since the Expos left Montreal in 2004, one of the primary reasons MLB bought the Expos and moved them out of Montreal because Olympic Stadium was no longer an MLB caliber facility and there was no hope for a new facility in Montreal. It's one thing to have a novelty there with a team playing 20-40 games like Tampa has proposed, but I would have hoped MLB learned its lesson about placing teams in markets where they will not be adequately supported.
  8. RHP LHP 1- Pitcher Pitcher 2-Narvaez Narvaez 3-Tellez Tellez 4-Wong Wong 5-Peterson Brosseau 6-Adames Adames 7-Yelcih Yelich 8-Cain Cain 9-Renfroe Renfroe DH-Hiura McCutcheon Brosseau was a college short stop, I'm sure he could play SS in a pinch in the majors. They will have Pablo Reyes on the MLB club at least until Urias is healthy. I would bet the manager likely plays McCutcheon and Hiura at DH primarily but will roll all the players through at DH, and keep the hitters with the hot bats in the lineup.
  9. If Hiura is still swinging a hot bat when the season starts, they'll find him at bats (DH, 1B, LF etc.), especially with 28 players to start the year. By the time the rosters go back to 26, Urias would be healthy and Pablo Reyes would not be needed.
  10. Rob Deer did have a lot of late inning magic too; 54 of his 230 (24%) career homeruns occurred in the 8th, 9th or extra innings. Deer also seemed to be good at going deep against the better pitchers in the game at the time homering off of: Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, Jack Morris as well as Jimmy Key, Roger Clemens, Mark Langston, Chuck Finley, Dave Stewart, Frank Viola and Tom Gordon. He'd be the veteran that ends up on a contender every year because of his "clutch late inning power". Like someone said, a different era cost him a lot of scratch.
  11. Look no further than the Twins. With Josh Donaldson, they signed one of the biggest FAs in 2020, then traded for Nelson Cruz. In the COVID year they were a good club, and got bounced immediately in the wacky 2020 playoffs. In 2021 they lost nearly 90 games, they dumped Nelson Cruz, they dumped their #1 starter when he refused to sign an extension where the Twins would have set his value. They threatened to trade away Buxton for the same reason. Then in the offseason they acquired Sonny Gray to replace Barrios, then made a series of deals to get out of Josh Donaldson's contract costing them another good player Mitch Garver in the process. Sure, they then signed the biggest name free agent in Carlos Correa. However, if he plays well and the Twins compete he'll almost assuredly opt out after the season, if they're on pace to lose 90 games again and he plays, well Correa will be gone by the deadline. I'd rather have the Brewers way of constructing a roster than the constant wheel spinning of the Twins for example, even though they do sign big name free agents frequently.
  12. Gott signed a major league deal with the Brewers, and has 3+ years of service time. As such his guarantee is likely in excess of a million dollars, which makes it almost a certainty he will be in the pen to start the year.
  13. And just like that the Marlins have no players left from the Yelich trade. Say what you want about his extension in Milwaukee but there’s example 1A trading for prospects doesn’t always work out.
  14. I know the Brewers must like David Dahl, but he looks like a thin-air slugger than a reclamation project. His All-Star year of 2019 he had OPS of 1.000 at Coors, in 2018 his home OPS was even better at 1.051. He has been merely average (and completely terrible his last two seasons) outside of Coors. I'm sure he could ride a hot bat right onto the major league roster, but I wouldn't expect much besides a middling bat which the Brewers are already chock full of.
  15. It’s all guaranteed money. He can go the A-Rod route and demand a trade to a winner in 2 years.
  16. Didn’t Tommy Pham indicate he’s willing to play 1B? If so, he could be a Brewer target. Right handed, positional versatility, likely to accept a short term contract and won’t break the bank. He simply didn’t hit at Petco, but had a .787 road OPS in 2021, and .816 in ‘20.
  17. Probably a result of the overall quality of their farm system. Not enough blue chippers/high ceiling players in their system, nor any minor leaguers close to being ready who also project as everyday players.
  18. Seems to me this proposal would be a quantity for quality deal. None of the Brewers current minor leaguers can be qualified as a "can't miss" prospects, and, for what those lists are worth, none of their prospects are regarded as amongst the Top 50 or so in the game. The Brewers don't have the type of minor league talent to swing trades for everyday players with years of team control remaining. If Milwaukee wanted to acquire Reynolds they'd probably have to deal from a combination of players like Devin Williams, Urias, Ashby, Cousins etc. Young major league ready players with upside and long-term team control remaining.
  19. Castellanos opted out of a two year 34 million dollar guarantee. I agree, there likely is one or two more players the Brewers will still acquire. However, Castellanos most likely will not be one as he is obviously seeking something more than 2 yrs and 34 million. In fact, it would turn out to have been a pretty poor decision by Castellanos if he ends up taking a significant pay-cut in AAV or not getting additional years.
  20. There's no way, McCutchen signed this quickly for just 5-6 million dollars. The going rate for veteran outfielders on one year deals last year seemed to be about 8-10 million dollars. Joc Pederson made 7.5 million last year, Eddie Rosario made 8 million. McCutchen while a little bit older than those players, also had a better offensive season than both. Kyle Schwarber played on a one year deal for 10 million. Therefore, I would proffer a guess McCutchen isn't playing for anything less than 8 million this year, and most likely will have a mutual option for 2023 with a buyout of a couple million dollars to push the AAV up over 10 million.
  21. Taylor doesn’t have the power of a pro typical first baseman, and likely won’t have the defense of a prototypical first baseman either. They’d be ahead finding someone who plays their naturally.
  22. Taylor is already 28, and has a sub .330 OPB for his career in both the majors as well as the minors. Its great when a 2nd round pick makes it after spending a decade in the minors, but biography aside Taylor is just a guy.
  23. I don’t think Bryant cares where he plays, he just wants the money. After a year or two in Colorado he can complain and ask to be traded like Arenado.
  24. Saurez hasn’t had a good season in 2 years, hit .198 last year is 30 and is owed 50 million dollars yet. The Reds are likely happy to move that 50 million. Moustakas is probably next
  25. The difference is an .850 OPS hitter will cost 18 million+, McCutchen probably costs 10 or less
