  1. I have totally done a 180 on Jace Peterson. He's got a spot on this team as long as he wants it.
  2. He had a reputation as a good defender before coming to the Brewers ... and that was before dropping 30 pounds. I mean, he was their regular CF last year, even at his hefty status. He isn't Mookie Betts out there, but he's a solid defensive RF.
  3. I mean, Cain has hit well lately. Pretty generous. He's 5 for his last 29. .264 in his last 30 games. That's fine.
  4. To force another team to have an interest in trading for him? I understand that a lot of people carry resentment for Thompson and especially how the end of his career went. But I have to admit, citing the Sitton situation as part of that is something I hadn't seen before today. Seems an odd hill to die on, just IMO. I was a pretty big TT supporter until the bungling of that situation as it became apparent that he could no longer function in this job. Not surprisingly, he was out a year or two later. I'm shocked you never saw anyone criticize the handling of that. Did you follow the team at the time? I remember being pretty upset initially that they didn't get anything for him. The release seemed to come out of the blue. After snippets started trickling out about him questioning management and gameplans, things became a bit more clear. When you are Aaron Rodgers, you have the leeway to get away with that stuff. No so when you're Josh Sitton. Sitton was a very good guard in his prime, but he was trending downward and was having some difficulty staying on the field by the time the Packers let him go. I was moreso upset with how they replaced Sitton. Signing the corpse of Jahri Evans certainly wasn't the answer.
  5. Castillo and Woodruff have both had pretty crappy Augusts. Woodruff in 3 starts has an ERA of 4.50 and a WHIP of 1.500. Castillo has 4 starts with an ERA of 5.09 and a WHIP of 1.435. Difference is Castillo was a dumpster fire in April and May, while Woodruff was pitching like a Cy Young candidate. Like I said earlier, Castillo will likely pitch well against the Brewers tonight (because he always does), but if one of these guys is going to right the ship for the rest of the season, I imagine it's likely going to be Woodruff.
  6. No structural issue but that probably means he is done for the season and so will be the Cardinals. That September schedule for the Cardinals is brutal as they play all but one series against teams competing for a playoff spot. With the Brewers scheduled to play the Cardinals 10 more times this season, I can't say this bothers me all that much.
  7. True that the benefit of hindsight makes a lot of these takes look bad. There were a few that were simply atrocious right from the very start, though. Saying Wong is overpriced and awful? Average player past his prime (he's 30) at a position we don't need? And of course the criticism of WAR as a viable statistic. I mean, those were awful before the ink was dry on Wong's contract.
  8. Castillo will pitch well ... because he always seems to pitch well against the Brewers. We are going to need a rebound start from Woodruff tonight after he got knocked around by the Cardinals last week. I expect a tight, low-scoring game.
  9. Wonder if we might see another bench player come up from Nashville before tomorrow's game? Pretty tough with a super short bench. Of what they have available on the 40-man, Lopes or Ray make some sense. If they add a player to the 40-man, Dahl has been incredibly hot since he arrived in Nashville.
  10. Soo ... grabbing Hunter Strickland off the reliever du jour scrapheap turned out to be a pretty deft move, at least so far.
  11. This aged very poorly. That is a lot of sports-talk radio-type terrible cold takes rolled into one post. Belongs on Twitter.
  12. Huge win. Has to be totally deflating for the Reds. An 8.5 game lead with 36 to go isn't insurmountable, but it's getting close.
  13. I hope so. It’s painful to watch him at the plate and his lack of plate discipline really stands out on this patient Brewers team. Sure is a far cry from the April lineups that featured JBJ, Shaw, Hiura and Arcia, along with an impatient Yelich and ice cold Garcia.
  14. Ehh, win some, lose some. Can't win the games you don't play, though. Next year Bradley will be Narvaez and Garcia as we are off defending our Wild Card banner and World Series trophy. I have the feeling we're going to get some nice value out of JBJ yet this year. He's a veteran with a lot of playoff experience ... who has performed well in the postseason. A guy with his defensive skills, speed, baserunning and baseball smarts is extremely valuable in the playoffs.
  15. For a team that viewed itself as a playoff contender, that move made zero sense. But then the Reds have been a rudderless ship for awhile now.
  16. I get what you are saying, but both Williams and Hader, especially with the way they have pitched lately, are pretty matchup proof. Williams has a .451 OPS against vs RHB, and a .747 OPS against vs LHB. Hindsight is great, but Joey votto is a pretty good LHB. Williams had his issues against left-handed hitters early in the season. He's been much better of late.
  17. I get what you are saying, but both Williams and Hader, especially with the way they have pitched lately, are pretty matchup proof.
  18. The Brewers just pushed 4 across on Lorenzen and Givens, the Reds' best two relievers. Lets see how the Reds do against the Brewers' best two now. Playoff atmosphere tonight. Gotta love it.
