  1. I think you are selling Marcano short a bit as a prospect, too. Ranking #5 in the Padres' stacked system is no small feat. Marcano would likely be #1 or #2 in the Brewers' system (ahead of Turang). He's legit. With Tatis, Machado, and Cronenworth all either locked up or controllable for quite a few years, the Padres have people to hold down the infield for a while. This is one where Marcano's value is probably a lot higher for most other teams than it is for the Padres. Bingo ... same reason why the Brewers were able to get their hands on another former high-end top middle infield prospect in Luis Urias last year.

  3. Robert Murray does seemingly have very good sources inside the Brewers front office, so I trust the quote. Between this quote, and last week David Stearns giving what seemed like a slightly defensive answer to McCalvy when asked about adding a “big name player” (Link) it sure does seem like the front office is going to take a big swing at this deadline if presented the opportunity. It’s going to be a fascinating to see what this team looks like by next weekend. As always, there is the "temper your enthusiasm" quotes as well: “What we talk about a lot this time of year is ‘Let’s focus on the acquisitions that are most likely to impact us in the win column, not always the acquisitions that are most likely to garner headlines.’ Sometimes those two can line up; they absolutely can. But sometimes they do not. "Sometimes there are more under-the-radar moves that can have the biggest impact.” - David Stearns https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/columnists/tom-haudricourt/2021/07/23/milwaukee-brewers-assess-options-trade-deadline-nears/8070227002/ I don't care if they get a big name. Begging for big names (then getting upset if it doesn't happen) is something a 12-year-old does. If they make deals, I want them to be for valuable guys who are going to shore up this contending team.
  4. This is such an embellishment. Who here wouldn't love it if they added a big bat to the lineup? Basically everyone would. Wanting them to add some good help, while being disciplined enough not to say "who cares what it costs in prospects", so you don't end up giving up the next Woodruff or Burnes for short-term help, is a balancing act. Who says it has to be short term help?? It doesn't have to be a rental you know? I mean the Padres just acquired Frazier, and he's not a rental. There is zero chance that Adam Frazier is the type of player you have been begging them to sell the farm for.

  6. He had a bad inning. Otherwise has been his typical lights-out self.
  7. The offense that has averaged like 5 and a half runs a game since we acquired Adames? This guy is not your average pitcher. Neither were the first two guys they threw in this series.
  8. Not pleased with his performance. Also not willing to give up on him. I don't think you are either, though.
  9. Team has scored 7 and 6 in consecutive games against good White Sox pitchers, but ok.
  10. Padres system is loaded. Marcano would be like us trading Turang. Marcano and Turang are similar type prospects.
  11. Marcano is a Top 100 type of prospect. Was #6 in the Padres' loaded system prior to the season, and has seen MLB playing time this year as a 21-year-old. He's the big prize of this deal I think.
  12. Will be REALLY interesting to see what the return is. Frazier is having a career year, but obviously isn't a power guy. Excited to not have to see him this week, but NOT excited to possibly see him in the playoffs.
  13. He's a backup at AAA. Never played an inning of 1B before a couple days ago, but OK. You do you. While he does need to show he can actually play the position and isn't Khris Davis defensively, among guys with at least 100 at-bats, Hummel ranks among the top 5 in the system in walk rate (#1), K rate, ISO and swinging strike rate (only non-middle infielder in the top 5). Age and defensive value are definite knocks but the idea of Hummel being able to be a competent big league hitter can't be discounted at this point. Compare him to Thomas Dillard, who kind of seems to have a similar profile at this point (defensive limited emergency catcher). It is getting increasingly tough to make the case for Dillard being the better prospect. He's going to be on my list this time around, albeit more in the 15-20 area. Th Brewers' player development department isn't a bunch of idiots, though. If Hummel had any kind of big league future, he'd be playing every day. But as it is now, his playing time is sporadic. The fact that he hasn't been able to carve out even a full time role as a 26-year-old in AAA tells me that the Brewers view him as, at most, an organizational soldier

  15. He's a quality defender with the ability to run into one once in a while and send it over the fence. That makes him more valuable than Hiura right now.
  16. Only two more games. It was announced earlier that Cain will be in Pittsburgh for the Pirates next week. Play him the two or three games…. It would be sad to have maybe our best hitter against left handed pitching down in AAA. Is there any way to keep him around? Yeah ... send Hiura down on Tuesday. It would mean no RHH 1B, but it isn't like Hiura is doing anything to deserve playing time anyway. Both Peterson and Tellez aren't terrible against lefties. Would be a little tougher to find time for 5 OFers, but I'm sure they can figure that out.
  17. I'd say at the time of the trade, Urias was the more hyped, heralded prospect. He had Top 25 MLB prospect buzz. Grisham ascended so quickly during the 2019 system that the ranking services never really had the chance to catch up before he was in the majors.
  18. Only two more games. It was announced earlier that Cain will be in Pittsburgh for the Pirates next week.
  19. That's beside the point. Doesn't add to the narrative
  20. Huh?!? The trade for Yelich was 3.5...basically 4 years ago in that we've had 4 draft classes since the trade. That was the last time we traded away premium talent (Unless you count the Jonathan Schoop type trades). We haven't really had premium talent to trade till this year. I suspect he's alluding to Grisham. That's the only young "premium talent" type who's been recently traded. Rasmussen I guess would be another, depending on how you value relief prospects.
  21. Might just have something in this Gustave character. 98 usually plays no matter what, and he's got some wicked movement to boot.
  22. Taylor continues to come up big in big spots. Gonna be weird having all those OFers on the roster when Cain comes back next week.
