  1. I don't think this idea could have been summed up more perfectly. Bravo. (I do wish that those in Group 3 would make their visits to the IGT's a little less frequent.)
  2. I've heard of NY style and Chicago style... but what is Detroit style? Tastes like defeat? There is St Louis style pizza too...specifically involving provel cheese. I bet that pizza thinks it's WAY better than the other pizzas, too.
  3. Keke was doing some limited stuff off to the side today. That means he's getting closer.
  4. I really think its the NYMets gathering parts to fill future holes as they trade a package to either Colorado (for Arenado) or ChiCubs (for Kris Bryant).. Cubs trading Bryant for like JD Davis, Thomas Szapucki & a couple teenagers would be pretty satisfying. I think that's too much. Given this depressed market, Bryant's injury history, his terrible season last year, and his enormous salary, he has close to negative value. They'll be lucky to get a lottery ticket or two without having to pay a significant portion of his salary.
  5. Who though? Other than Justin Turner (who is 36), the free agent 3B market is pretty bad. Many believe that LeMahieu wouldn't be an effective everyday 3B. You are looking at guys like Gyorko, Todd Frazier, Maikel Franco, Tommy LaStella or Marwin Gonzalez. Trade perhaps? I think that's likely the route they would need to go. If Hader is moved, I sure as heck hope an MLB-ready 3B is coming back.

  7. Don't know how interested the White Sox are going to be in Hader after signing Hendriks to that massive deal. They seem more interested in a starter.
  8. The problem with this theory is that it typically takes 3-ish days for enough viral load to build up to actually test positive. Those contacts are likely, but it's unlikely that he'd have had enough time to catch the virus and have enough of a personal response to actually test positive in that short amount of time. Far more likely that his Tuesday test was positive due to an exposure on Friday or Saturday. If that's the case, then the Packers' tests tomorrow and Saturday are going to be key. Especially tomorrow. If all tests come back negative tomorrow, they are hopefully in the clear.
  9. Apparently the test he took in Indy with the Colts on Monday morning was negative. This positive is from his Tuesday test. My guess is that, if he actually contracted it, and this isn't a false positive, its from a contact he had during the 6-hour drive from Indy to Green Bay on Monday (gas station, store, etc) or while getting settled in Green Bay on Monday evening. I assume the Packers put up short-term players like Veldheer at a hotel or condo, but it's likely that he had to come in contact with people from outside the facility during this time. Really hard to blame anyone for this, as it doesn't appear, at least on the surface, that any protocols were broken.
  10. From what I've read, the Packers seem to be one of the most careful teams in the league when it comes to spacing their players out during meeting/film sessions, and requiring that everyone mask up. Heck, the players even have those in-helmet mouth shields during practice. This is not surprising, though, considering the reputation the team's medical staff has (rightfully) earned for being extremely cautious and conservative when it comes to keeping players healthy. I imagine they have to be one of the top teams in the league when it comes to fewest player games lost this season due to COVID. Just goes to show how letting your guard down, even a little bit when it comes to COVID, can bite you in the butt. Hopefully it is determined that Veldheer either picked it up someplace outside the organization, or it was a false positive.
  11. I still think this is premature. None of these guys has signed for anything other than a minor league deal with an invite or a non-guaranteed contract. Last year's guys were major league deals, some with option years. Until there's a clear sign that one of these guys is signed with the intention of them being significant contributors, I'm going to assume that this is nothing more than the typical roster-filler moves you see every year. This is also where I am, although I admit that I'm starting to get a small case of happy feet. I mean, how many utility infielders does one team need on its depth chart?
  12. alfredo figaro and dontrelle willis might disagree with you. They don't care. Guaranteed.
  13. Everyone's favorite from the 2020 season is back on a minor league pact with an invitation to MLB Spring Training, per Adam McCalvy. Apparently Stearns has identified middling utility players as the new market inefficiency. Hopefully Peterson is in Nashville, and this is much ado about nothing ... but I think it is appropriate in the Major League forum, as Peterson was a semi-regular for a portion of the abbreviated 2020 season. It is getting to the point now, at least to me, where these signings are getting concerning. I keep hoping that these utility types are all to provide minor league depth, but there's only so many spots in Nashville. I certainly hope that the Brewers aren't signing the likes of Robertson, Lopes, Green, Reyes and now Peterson with the idea that they are going to be big league regulars. I guess I don't mind these signings if they truly are "lightning in a bottle" type signings, and they aren't banking on these guys to be regular contributors.
  14. All guys with either a history with the team, guys signed to a big deal, or guys who they consider future cornerstones, though. When was the last time they gave a minimum-wage guy who they just picked up 400 ABs? Dontcha think there is maybe a bit of hyperbole in that claim? I mean, who? Who are you talking about that backs this claim up?
  15. One would hope, though, that if he's hitting like he did in 2019, there's no way he'd see 400+ ABs. They are certainly not obligated to give him those. The only way he sees those kind of numbers is if he's effective ... or I suppose if the wheels fall off somewhere. Remember, this is the same team that only gave Travis Shaw 270 plate appearances in 2019 – when he was coming off a 32 HR, .825 OPS season – because he was struggling mightily. If Robertson doesn't show anything, they'll simply drop him before he makes too much of a negative impact.
  16. Do you like that philosophy better than the "reclamation projects" that you've been so critical about? Remember ... a utility player is is only a utility player until he proves to be good enough to shed that label. Not saying guys like Robertson, Lopes and Reyes are good enough, but if you hit on one, there is the possibility of a cheap everyday player. If you squint hard enough, you could perhaps see Robertson taking Gyorko's role as the RH side of a 3B platoon, and perhaps spelling Hiura at 2B and getting some time at 1B as well.
  17. Except this one is 26, and not 34. Addition by subtraction!
  18. This is a good point. Instead of going after cheap guys who have proven that they can be productive major leaguers, but either fell on hard times or are one-dimensional, he's going after a bunch of "pedigree" types who have big tools, for for some reason or another have never hit it big. Interesting theory.
  19. Huh ... don't get this one. He did have a decent 2018 I guess.
  20. I saw a report this morning that said that with Manfred speaking out yesterday telling teams to prepare as if Spring Training will begin on time next month, it is believed that a large swath of fringy-type players (and perhaps some that are above that level) are expected to sign split contracts in the coming week in order to map out their futures and get into high-gear offseason training. It's David Stearns season, everyone!!!
  21. Best reliever on the free agent market, but will turn 32 next month. It’s reportedly a three-year deal with a fourth year club option. Deal is worth $54 million. I continue to be flabbergasted that not one team put a waiver claim in on Brad Hand. Hendricks can get 3/54 on the open market but every team in baseball gets a shot at a 1/10 contract for Hand and not one single team wants to bite on that?! I know its not my money, but sheesh it feels like we should have jumped on that. The only thing I can figure is that there must be something in Hand's underlying numbers, or some sort of personal or locker room issue. Because you're right ... no team grabbing him doesn't make a lot of sense on the surface.
  22. Titans have a routine of stomping on logos. Yep, it's the NFL. Often stupid is as stupid does.
  23. Morrisson (28 PAs), Smoak (126 PAs) & Gyorko (135 PAs) combined for about 13% of the Brewers 2,188 PAs in 2020. Linblom (45.1 IP), Grimm (4.2 IP) & Morin (0 IP) combined for less than 10% of the Brewers 517 IP in 2020. I'd personally only classify Gyorko as a reclamation project out of those six (Morrison/Grimm/Morin were minor league depth signings, Smoak was just a blah veteran & Lindblom must have had multiple teams interested in reclaiming him since he got a multi year deal), but even if you want to count all six they still came in well under 20% on both PAs & IPs for the season. I'm just getting to the point where I'd almost not hear about any of the off-season signings because every thread I read goes the same way. We sign someone who's young, has some obvious warts and hasn't really made it in the big leagues yet and then people complain about that player because he's not a star and look at what the Mets and Padres are doing. Just...rinse and repeat. Yep, just change the active teams for each year. Last year it was the Reds. Phillies year before that.
  24. T.J. Watt had been invisible tonight playing a huge chunk of the game against a backup right tackle with Conklin out.
  25. Ravens/Bills (unless Pittsburgh makes a miraculous comeback) is going to see must-see TV next week. Actually, Cleveland/Kansas City would be a great game too. Hope Cleveland puts this thing away.
