  1. That article was edited after I read it this morning to reflect that. It initially said that Murphy was among those who was retained.
  2. Murphy is the safe choice. He's as close to the status quo as they are going to get. And if they truly see themselves as a contender in 2024, and intend on hanging on to all their major pieces, he'd make sense as the odds-on favorite for the job. He is well liked in the clubhouse and respected in the organization. He does bring a little more of an old-school mentality and fiery disposition than Counsell. It would add a cool little caveat to the I-94 rivalry, as it would be a mentor vs. mentee matchup, and also pit Murphy against the guy who has essentially been his boss for years.
  3. Counsell isn't an idiot. He's gotta know that while moving on is bad enough, moving on in THIS way absolutely tarnishes the legacy he has help make here. This isn't just leaving, it's going scorched earth. There is absolutely more to this story that hasn't been reported.
  4. Makes me think that they already know who the manager is going to be.
  5. While going to the Cubs was probably a surprise, I think the writing has been on the wall here since September, as alluded to by Attanasio yesterday. And typically when a name comes out of left field - such as Weeks - it usually means there is some fire to the smoke.
  6. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that the Cubs invest HEAVILY in the bullpen this offseason. They aren't going to hand a record contract to a new manager, only to handcuff one of his biggest strengths (pen management). The Cubs likely aren't going to be able to unearth dominant relievers out of seemingly thin air like the Brewers have done over the last decade, but they also have the money to spend on established relievers that the Brewers have never had.
  7. The fact that Attanasio said yesterday that the entire coaching staff is returning sans Counsell tells me that they are looking to fill this internally. That means someone like Murphy, Viillanueva, Weeks or McKinven. Maybe someone like Matt Erickson or Rick Sweet.
  8. Seitzer checks the "former Brewer" box. Hitting coach for the best offense in baseball. He is older, but there's a lot to like there.
  9. it is pretty telling that both Stearns and Counsell have decided to leave in successive years. I think they both felt as though they did about as much as they could in Milwaukee, given the obvious market and budget discrepancies between teams. As a Brewer fan, I think that's what makes this hurt more. All my life, I've grown accustom to the Brewers eventually firing managers and GMs. But by all accounts, both Steans and Counsell were valued here and ownership wanted them to stay. They chose to go on their own. That says more about the situation than anything, IMO.
  10. Well, if they REALLY wanted to up the ante on the I-94 rivalry ...
  11. Next to 0%. He's going to have to win a World Series in the next 2-3 years, or he won't make it to the 4th year of that deal. The Cubs have some talent, and I expect them now to empty the checkbook in free agency, but they are still a very flawed team.
  12. Not gonna be a Mark A apologist on this one. I really wish he would have ponied up. This sucks. That said, the Brewers' "cheap ass" owner DID, by all accounts, offer to make Craig Counsell (who has never taken a team to the World Series or won the Manager of the Year Award) the highest paid manager in MLB. Not standing up for Mark A ... just stating facts.
  13. Considering the record contract he just signed, and the fact that he is replacing a well-liked manager in David Ross (who didn't really do anything to deserve getting fired) expectations are going to be crazy high for Counsell in Chicago.
  14. Depends on if they see the team as a contender, or decide to tear it down. If they still see a quality team, I could see them going for someone like Gabe Kapler. Kinda robotic as a manager, but the guy preps like no one else, and was Manager of the year in 2021.
  15. The ship has sailed. Probably time to move on.
  16. Well, knock me over with a feather!
  17. Technically Joey isn't in the lineup. He's simply on the roster. Likely to serve as a pinch runner and/or defensive replacement late in games. If he starts any games this postseason I will be very surprised.
  18. This team won 92 games this year. Yet there are Debbie Downers in the Optimism Thread (the one thread where that type of attitude is kinda off limits)? Sheesh.
  19. Jeffrey Leonard Day is always the greatest day of the Magic Number Thread!
  20. We have reached Fernando-mania!
  21. I prefer Jeffrey Leonard or Franklin Stubbs in this scenario LOL
  22. The Brewers getting scorching hot over the last two weeks while the Cubs have gone ice cold has certainly been a nice bonus.
  23. I realize that he wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I always appreciated the energy and moxie that Nyjer Morgan brought to the Brewers.
