  1. It's also very possible that the unaffiliated prospect ranking services have Graterol rated much higher than MLB teams actually do. Like I said above, while he's got a huge arm, his body type and physique don't lend themselves to prolonged success. For every Bartolo Colon that finds a way to make it work, there are 20 Luis Ortiz types who are ranked highly by independent scouting services and prospect rankings, but simply don't hold a lot of value and end up washing out.
  2. Had a similar thought. If the Crew is out of it at the deadline, that Dodgers farm system is ripe. If I'm the Dodgers, and I know that I can acquire Hader, I don't wait till the deadline on the chance that the Brewers are not in contention. I strike now. They managed to acquire Betts and Price without giving up anything huge on their farm. Are they really going to build a super team, then leave the end of close games up to wildcards like Blake Treinen and a potentially washed Kenley Jansen?
  3. I thought the same thing. I understand what the dodgers and sox are doing, i don't get it from the Twins perspective. I do. The Twins are obviously going for it. They see Maeda as contributing to the MLB club in a stronger fashion than Graterol will in the next two seasons. Maeda is a legit middle-rotation starter. Graterol is a 21-year-old kid with a huge arm and Rueben Quevedo's body.
  4. Dodgers are obviously in a go-for-it year now, with Betts a free agent after this season. I wonder if they start up conversations with the Brewers for Hader? The pen is the only potential weakness of their super team.
  5. I wouldn't imagine this would be the case for a guy in a showcase coming off injury. If there were ever a time to let it fly, it's when you're pitching for a job. I get the feeling too that he's done.
  6. Bob Nightengale @BNightengale Taijuan Walker, 27, the former prized pitching prospect who has pitched just 14 innings the last two years, worked out in front of about 20 scouts today in hopes of landing a major-league contract. His fastball was clocked at 85-88 mph as he's coming back from Tommy John surgery. This probably explains why Walker doesn't have a team. I know it's not even spring training yet, but topping out at 88 in a showcase is not ideal.
  7. I cut the cord a year ago, and not a day goes by that I regret it. I was paying $150/month for DISH, on top of the streaming services I was getting (Netflix, Hulu). Now I pay $25 for Sling (for 90% of the same channels I was getting in DISH), and spent about $100 on an antenna and signal booster to get the over-the-air channels. I'll likely switch to YouTube TV once Brewer games start back up, or stream them on reddit.
  8. No one is ignoring him, but he's gotta prove that he's healthy. I think Stearns basically said that they don't know if he will be ready to start the season, and they were happy to have the option of sending him to AAA if he isn't.
  9. While I typically preach benefit of the doubt, I too am worried as well that the production at 3B is going to be terrible. Sure, we could get very good production at other spots to help mitigate it, but why should we need to be in that situation? At the same time, as sveumrules says above, our 3B production last year was pretty meh. And both Gyorko and Sogard aren't making enough where their salaries are going to stand in the way of making an improvement at that spot if warranted. If Stearns has proven anything, it's that he isn't going to sit on his hands and allow a spot to be a black hole long term. Shaw was given a pretty decently long leash last year, and multiple chances, but it isn't like they just kept running him out there for the whole season. if the current plan doesn't work. I expect them to pivot relatively quickly.
  10. 1. For Turang and Ashby? Yes, it would. It would be a bear on the payroll side, but there are enough young arms in the system to get by those two years. Arcia gets DFAed for the 40-man spot, but that's OK. ss: Urias 2b: Hiura lf: Yelich 3b: Arenado c: Narvaez rf: Garcia 1b: Smoak/Braun cf: Cain bench: Pina, Sogard, Gyorko, Gamel, Smoak/Braun rotation: Woodruff, Lindblom, B. Anderson, Houser, Lauer bullpen: Hader, Knebel, Peralta, Suter, Claudio, Rasmussen, Andrews, Yardley That is the favorite to win the NL Central in 2020. Clancy, come on man. I know your new love affair is with Andrews, but while there is more than a 0% chance he sees big league innings this year, it isn't much higher than that. Rasmussen stands a better shot, but it is still probably slim. Yardley might be next on the DFA list, as he's out of options. You are missing Phelps and Black as well, who are projected to have big pen roles.
  11. Unless someone steps up for Hader, or the Mariners decide to salary dump Seager, yeah.
  12. Sling does not have FS Wisconsin. Yes they do. I had Sling. It's just not in their Orange package. That said, Sling sucks. I've been much happier with Hulu Live. But if you're looking for something cheaper and don't care about ESPN but need Brewer and Bucks games, Sling Blue gets the job done. I usually used the FSGO app with my Sling login because the feed on Sling wasn't good. I can guarantee you, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that Sling does NOT have FS Wisconsin. They dropped it in July. Sling is owned by DISH, and DISH no longer carries FS Wisconsin either. I hated Hulu Live personally. The platform is just shoddy. I've had the most success with YouTube TV.
  13. Sling does not have FS Wisconsin.
  14. Yeah Breeland doesn't bother me as much as Pennel. I have no idea why he was let go. Not only that ... the Packers actually brought him in for a workout this season when he was a free agent. 10 days later he signed with the Chiefs. As a Packer fan, I want me some Chris Jones. He was in the Niner backfield all night. What a stud.
  15. Supak doesn’t need an NRI because he is on the 40-man. Barker has to be the biggest surprise to me. It seems weird to invite 90% of the likely AAA roster and not Barker. Perhaps Barker is the new version of Nate Griep .... i.e., the pitcher who puts up great numbers in the upper minors, but the front office determines would get lit up like a Christmas tree if he had to face an actual MLB lineup?
  16. Yeah, they got it within 7 a few times, but then the Nuggets would immediately nail a 3. Happened several times. Frustrating game to watch. Not a lot a team can do, even one as good as the Bucks, when the opponent is that hot.
  17. Clancy ... this thread is about major league rotation options in 2020. Why are you mentioning names like Zavolas, Francis, Bettinger and the like? Those guys are all at least a year away at best, and the majority of them likely will never throw a major league pitch. Please keep this thread on point with major league pitching options, instead of naming the guys pitching in High A that you like for the upteenth time. Of the guys you mentioned, Supak and Burnes may make an impact this year. Brown possibly if he rebounds. Jankins might be a fill-in type down the road.
  18. Nah, just went up against another very good team that had an uncharacteristically great game from beyond the arc. That's gonna happen once in a while. The Nuggets couldn't miss from deep.
  19. Official: Guerra now in DFA limbo, per McCalvy I expect Guerra to get through waivers pretty easily and stay in the system.
  20. I don't know if I would have or not. When looking at the numbers, David Phelps was a substantially better pitcher than Strop last year. Strop is also 1 1/2 years older than Phelps. Strop has better career numbers, but again, he was pretty bad last year, and saw a significant drop in velocity on his fastball. I guess the way I look at it, Strop probably has a higher ceiling than Phelps, but also a significantly lower floor. One thing I do like to see, though, is the mass exodus of bullpen pitchers from the Cubs. They've lost a ton from that area, and have added very little.
  21. The Reds have certainly made a lot of "splashy" type moves, juxtaposed to the Brewers' moves, which are definitely more the "under the radar" variety.
  22. I'd still like to see Derek Dietrich signed to a minor league deal. I'm not sold on the Gyorko/Sogard platoon at 3B being productive, or even staying healthy. Dietrich started off scorching hot for the Reds last season, before falling off the planet in the second half. But he's a decent bounce-back candidate, and he's only entering his age 30 season. He'd also provide decent power from the left side of the plate, and has quite a bit of positional versatility (although he's not particularly good defensively at any of those positions). Plus, the Cardinals hate the guy, which would bring an extra layer of fun.
  23. I can relate, but the opposite of ancient is current... I teach High School. I constantly have kids that ask if I have seen "insert current culture youtube clip, movie, whatever" or even worse, some new music video clip of really bad current crap music. My answer is no 99% of the time. It is world ending if I don't see it, so they want to show me. I am polite, and tell them after class hoping they forget. They NEVER forget, so same thing with me. They pull it up on a device, either their phone or chromebook, and I stand there, uninterested, hating every last second, waiting for it to be over. I'm not as nice as you, if I hate it I just tell them it isn't for me, which I usually tell them from the very beginning, or if it is music, I tell them it was horrible, and I like rock. lol I feel the pain. That is exactly how I feel every time my 10-year-old asks me for the hundredth time to watch the latest Dude Perfect video on YouTube.
  24. So we are hoping Orlando Arcia has a fluke season at the same age as Alcides Escobar? He followed up that season with a 53 OPS+. Alcides Escobar now 5,700 PAs and is the same cruddy player he always was. His career OPS+ raised to 73 after all these years. I mean, yeah. I'm not the biggest fan of Arcia seeing a lot of playing time, or even really being on the 2020 team (and I've always been an Arcia supporter). But if he is, I'd love for him to have a fluke good season. Because it makes the team better. The comparison to Escobar wasn't to say that hopefully Arcia can rise to that level. It was to say "Hey, Alcides had that one year when he was 25 where he didn't look like a pitcher at the plate. Hopefully Orlando can do that this year." Then they can trade him for something more than a bag of balls.
  25. Deolis Guerra and Ronny Rodriguez better not be too comfortable either.
