  1. I expect/hope that Small and Ashby both make sizable jumps this year. Both those guys have the stuff and make-up to get through the system quickly. They are going to need Zach Brown and Trey Supak to step up and prove that they can get upper level and big league hitters out as well. The lack of starting pitching depth signings so far would seem to indicate that the front office believes that a few of these guys are poised to take the next step. You are talking about two players that haven't even tasted AA yet and Brown who was evidently bad enough in 2019 that the Brewers didn't use a 40 man spot to protect him. Supak was shelled in 6 out of his 7 starts in AAA, so hard to say if he is a possibility. They may be on the list of potential guys, but if they are high on the list, it isn't good for the Brewers. The fact that the team hasn't acquired more depth in that area tells me that the team must be high on those guys. I do expect several veteran types signed in the coming month, though. They seemingly need more fallback options available to them.

  3. If Eli would have entered the league a decade earlier, and been a contemporary of Favre, Aikman and Young, and put up the stats he did, he would have been a no-doubt Hall of Famer. He candidacy is somewhat hurt by playing in the era that he did, where he was overshadowed by guys like Rodgers and Roethlisberger, and even Romo for a time. But his 2 rings and longevity probably eventually get him to the hall. He's one of those guys that will probably look better as his career ages. He did have some great seasons.
  4. I'd be all over that if I was one of their rivals. I have no sympathy for those players who regularly pulled that crap and are going to skate off scot free. Obviously Bregman and Altuve are mentioned the most (along with Beltran), but have their been others accused of the cheating?
  5. I wonder what the over/under is on the number of opposing stadiums that are going to troll the Astros with Todd Rundgren's "Bang the Drum All Day"? Probably going to be a staple for every Bregman and Altuve at-bat in an opposing stadium.
  6. Aaron Sanchez will, at best, probably miss the first four/five months of next season...but more than likely will probably miss all of 2020. https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/baseball/news/astros-aaron-sanchez-could-miss-all-of-2020/ I see that ... his comeback from that shoulder issue seems to be getting pushed back further and further. At this point, he'd be a speculative add for 2021, and anything you get in 2020 is gravy. He's probably got the best arm and upside of anyone on that list, though. I view Walker as a flamed out uber-prospect who has one ok season to his name.
  7. Lol, yeah Cameron Maybin is the player I wanted the Brewers to draft with their pick at the time of that draft. Never lived up to the hype. It's to his credit he's still in the league 15 years later however. The title of this post was "2005 draft not aging well". I simply pointed out someone else that posted a 1.5WAR in 80+ games last year. I never said I wanted him over the rest of the guys in that draft, just merely added a name to the discussion. Your 'lol' is noted however for future potential conversations. Have a great day! Pretty sure he was laughing at himself for wanting Maybin
  8. No, it's simply reality. The Reds haven't done anything yet. No division has ever been won in January. Last year at this time, all the talking heads had the Phillies pegged for a World Series appearance. How'd that turn out? If the Reds get to June and are laying waste to their competition, I'll worry about them. Not now. And that is definitely not shortsighted. How could needing proof that the moves they are making are effective be considered short-sighted? If anything, handing them the NL Central crown in January is short-sighted by definition. Also yeah, Brewer fans thought that signing Grandal and Moose would make the team better than they were in 2018. Well, last year's team was demonstrably worse than 2018's. It's why they play the games.
  9. Of course it isn't "intentional". But never underestimate the ego trip that Mark Attanasio gets by jumping up on stage and announcing a big move to a crowd that's already lathered up. I do think that the Brewers have been guilty at times in the past of waiting to announce big personnel acquisitions until right before or during this event. It's happened so often that it is probably no longer completely coincidental.
  10. I can. They haven't proven anything other than spending a bunch of money on a bunch of names. It certainly wouldn't be the first time a team made a big free agent splash and ended up not living up to expectations. Heck, we only have to go back one year and look at the Phillies.
  11. Borland got his $463K for one year of not playing. Guess it didn't concern him too much... https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/chris-borland-14487/ Borland made 8 starts and played in 14 games for the 49ers in 2014, making 107 tackles. He had to pay back 3/4th of his signing bonus after he announced his retirement. Just because Borland counted for $463K against the 49ers 2015 cap doesn't mean that he saw that money. He didn't.
  12. McCutcheon is still pretty good.
  13. I think he knew exactly what he was doing. It's a wake-up call, and most if not all the players know he's right. Just announced that Pettine will be back for next year ... so there's that. I imagine the ice is a bit thinner for him now. I know Pettine was basically forced on Lafleur, so if there isn't improvement, I imagine change would be imminent. No one can say they haven't devoted a ton of money and draft capital to that side of the ball.
  14. I like the performance value relative to their cap number that a solid rookie contract K can provide, especially when you're really trying to address other needs, but I understand that it doesn't always work out. I'm sure the Bucs remember the Roberto Aguayo saga well. Matt Gay was ok, not great as a rookie this season. I don't think it's a very strong rookie class of kickers in 2020. I think the guy from Georgia is at the top and there isn't much else. That's the issue ... why create a hole for the sake of creating a hole? Why add another unknown to a team that already is likely to have several going into next season? Crosby seemingly wants to come back, isn't going to break the bank, and provides consistency. You're right ... they will need to eventually replace Crosby, and will likely do it with a young minimum-wage guy. But you don't do it following the best season of the guy's long, and actually pretty dang good career.
  15. I think this is crap. Honestly, I pretty much forgot that Murphy was even involved with the team this season. He was very hands off, and you never heard from him once. I never got the impression that he was pulling the strings on anyone, either. I do agree that LaFleur's game plan against the 49ers was terrible, and if the team was lacking in energy and motivation, the buck stops with him. That said, as a first-year head coach, I'm not sure what else could have been expected. But the honeymoon is over, and it appears that the 2020 schedule is going to be tougher than 2019. He needs to avoid the trap that Matt Nagy fell into this season.
  16. Viable free agent starting pitchers who are still available, and have even a hint of upside, include: Drew Smyly Taijuan Walker Danny Salazar Chad Bettis J.C. Ramirez Erasmo Ramirez Aaron Sanchez There are also a few former starters who have seen an uptick in success after moving to the pen. These include Trevor Cahill, Andrew Cashner and Collin McHugh. Considering the lack of starting pitching depth currently on the MLB roster and in the upper minors, I would expect the Brewers to be in on several of these guys. Provided their health checks out, I'd love to see Salazar, J.C. Ramirez and Aaron Sanchez on minor league deals. I'm not sold on Walker, though. Would also love to see Cashner and McHugh to help round out the pen.
  17. It sorta feels like Warner Brothers is trying to shove Robbie's Harley Quinn (and mainly her off-putting sex appeal) down the consumer's throat. Not that Disney and Marvel don't make their share of mistakes, but at least they don't try to pull that crap. When you base a character on smirks and wearing short shorts and tiny t-shirts, that's not a win. Suicide Squad was a terrible movie, and she was a big part of it. Now they are giving her multiple spin-offs?
  18. Should Jeter be downgraded because he played for a stacked team that made the postseason every year? I mean, probably not ... but then again, put Jeter on those 90s and early 2000s Brewers teams, and they still aren't sniffing the playoffs.
  19. Nolan Ryan got 98.8% of the vote. George Brett got 98.2 percent. Both of those guys are all-time greats. Heck, Robin Yount only got 77.5% of the vote. If you want to get up in arms, it should be with the 112 voters that deemed Robin Yount not worthy of Hall of Fame induction on his first ballot, not with one dude who didn't make Jeter an unanimous pick.
  20. DJ is an outlier that benefited from the juiced ball with his style of hitting and going to an easier home run ballpark. He had 19 HR there which significantly boosted his numbers. He was perfect for hitting the ball over that short porch in RF. Arenado's numbers would drop significantly other than maybe hitting homers at Fenway or Yankee Stadium. He wouldn't be bad, but he'd fall off a bit. Man, when I stumped for the Brewers to sign LeMahieu last offseason, all I was met with is "he's a Coors Field guy, he'll be terrible outside of Coors." Well, guess what ... outlier or not, LeMahieu was a stud for the Yankees. When you are a good player, you're a good player anywhere. Arenado didn't get that huge deal just because he can hit well at Coors. He got it because he's a stud. And he's going to be a stud in Arlington, Washington D.C., Milwaukee, or wherever else he ends up. Except St. Louis. If he ends up in St. Louis, he's gonna suck
  21. I would bet that Jeter doesn't care. The only ones who really seem to care are whiny Yankee fans on Twitter. After following several of them during the Hader trade talk last month, I've found that group to be both extremely thin skinned and entitled, which is a bad combination.
  22. This team has at least 10 priorities it needs to address before even thinking about making a change at kicker (or punter, another recent tangent of yours). Both of those positions are very minor in the scheme of this team's future success. I'm sure Crosby will sign another deal, and it likely will not be the most expensive deal for a kicker in the league. Ficken arguably looked better than him last preseason. He's gonna know he can't be greedy. Crosby is just fine, though, and will likely be just fine for at least the next 3 seasons.
  23. Yeah. I'm about halfway in between the 'statistics say he's great' and 'twitter says he's the worst MLB ever' poles, but I saw a projection for Martinez to get 5/$82 mil in free agency. That's insanity. Yeah, if Martinez is going to get that kind of coin, forget it. They could sign a guy like Joe Schobert or Nick Kwiatkowski and get a guy who is better in pass coverage and probably more athletic.
  24. DJ LeMahieu proved last year that the "Coors Field Effect" is arguably massively overrated. Arenado would likely be a stud wherever he plays. You cannot aggregate his road splits into a full season and expect that to be his stat line. Sometimes guys are just better hitters in their home park, regardless of where that park is.
  25. I don't think anybody saw much in Faria. I imagine the Brewers were the only ones to offer even a minor league deal. He's been awful for two consecutive years and getting worse. 2018: 5.40 ERA/5.08 FIP - 1.43 WHIP - 4.6 BBs/9 2019: 6.75 ERA/6.75 FIP - 2.14 WHIP - 5.8 BBs/9 No one had the opportunity to offer him a minor league deal. He went through waivers, which means that if no MLB was willing to add him to their 40-man roster, he automatically stays in the Brewers' organization on a minor league deal. He doesn't have enough service time to elect free agency.
