  1. I doubt Shaw is going anywhere but the bench for the time being. I've been wrong before when it comes to player moves, tough.
  2. Tinfoil hat time --- Burch Smith is coming in to mop up the 9th, after pitching two innings last night. This is typically how this team uses a pitcher who is about to join the San Antonio shuttle. Unless they are going to activate Wilkerson from the 10-day injured list, there is no other obvious pitching candidate for a call up. Could they be looking at bringing up a bat for this weekend? Hmmm ...
  3. That's an odd compliment for a pitcher. Starter, long reliever, stopper, closer ... it hasn't mattered. A healthy Guerra has been a good pitcher in any role they've put him in.
  4. He's been fine for the most part. He's been scored on in 4 of 15 appearances. Had blow-up appearances against the Dodgers (3 ER) and Cubs (2) before today. Days like today certainly won't help where he lines up on the bullpen totem pole, buts he's been far from a gas can this season.
  5. He was a college senior draftee from a big program, so he's used to facing top college competition. I imagine he'll have a lot tougher go of it at AA, facing the type of hitting he's more used to facing in college. If he continues to deal, it is certainly possible he sees ML innings this year. He definitely fits the blueprint for what the Brewers like in their relievers.
  6. Does Hader get an inning today with the off-day tomorrow? He hasn't pitched since his 13-pitch, 3 K save on Sunday.
  7. That is one heck of a start from Woodruff. I'll take 6 innings and 1 run allowed with 9 Ks every day. Great stuff today. He's getting better with each start.
  8. I agree ... he's dealing now. Send him back out for the 6th, but maybe have someone start warming. If he gets in trouble or the pitch count starts creeping uncomfortably over 100, go to the pen.
  9. Growing up, I never imagined Bill Spiers having such a think, deep southern drawl. Kinda neat hearing these guys.
  10. Other than a kinda high pitch count, Woodruff is looking good today. Touching 97 on the radar gun, and crisp breaking stuff. Hopefully they can get 6 out of him today.
  11. That doesn't fit the narrative! Claudio doesn't throw fast, therefore he sucks! I’ll say it AGAIN I like Claudio But IF we have an abundance of high leverage multi-inning pen arms at the back end that can strike out the side, he’s the one I’m de-activating for the playoffs. If it’s a choice between Rasmussen and Claudio, I’m going with Rasmussen. I disagree. If Cody Bellinger is coming up to bat in a 1-run game in the 7th, and my choices are a veteran lefty reliever who is nails against lefty power, or a relatively untested right-handed rookie fireballer, I'm taking the proven lefty. Every time. That said ... this is putting the cart WAY before the horse. There's a very good possibility that pen will look substantially different by the time playoff baseball rolls around.

  13. Bravo to you for being able to operate with high-end blinders regarding this movie. I wish I were as diligent. I say it last Tuesday, but already had a pretty good idea of what was going to happen as i failed at blocking out all the spoilers. They lifted the ban on spoilers this week, so they've been all over. Hell, even the new Spiderman trailer released this week is a massive Endgame spoiler.
  14. TBBC, I know I have been one of those who have gotten into it with you in the past regarding your thoughts on the future of the Brewers' pitching. I totally see where you're coming from with those thoughts, and toning down the condescension has definitely helped in getting your points across, and in helping me see that a lot of your theory has merit. While I don't quite see the drastic shifts in philosophy you are predicting coming into play, what I do see is a front office who has put together a staff versatile enough to make adjustments on the fly, seemingly game-to-game at times. Last night's game was an excellent example of this versatility coming into play, and it worked marvelously. While I don't see openers and/or piggybacking becoming a regular thing anytime soon, the fact that they have the horses to do it is ultimately a recipe for success.
  15. It's getting pretty plainly obvious that they see him as a potential MLB pen addition this year. The question is going to be if they see him as exclusively a multi-inning reliever going forward, or if a return to starting is in the cards next year. In either case, it appears that the Brewers may have gotten the steal of the 2018 draft with Rasmussen.
  16. I always try to be optimistic as well, but after getting to Scherzer and Strasburg the last couple days, I kinda expect Hellickson to shut down the offense today. He's totally the type of sub-replacement level trash starter that pitches a gem against this team.
  17. Clancy, you know that mutual options are very, very rarely ever exercised. It's simply a way for cost-conscious teams to defer money to the next year's payroll. Moose is in essence on a one-year deal.
  18. Claudio is a matchup nightmare against left-handed hitters, and has a rubber arm that you can trot out there every day. If there's any time someone like that is valuable, it's the playoffs. You may not like him, but with the price they gave up for him, and how he's been used so far, he's going to continue to be a big part of this bullpen. The "opener" philosophy works in isolated cases. A team can get away with it in one or perhaps two spots in the rotation. Any more than that really limits your bullpen options, and for a team like the Brewers that regularly goes to the pen early and plays matchups, it just isn't going to be sustainable without the playoff schedule of having set days off between games.
  19. I saw a story yesterday that projected the Packers to sign Michael Crabtree. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I suppose having a vet WR would be a good thing, but they could really use a guy capable of playing the slot, and I'm just not sure that would be Crabtree's best fit. I am really looking forward to seeing these young receivers develop, too, and having a middling vet playing ahead of them isn't necessarily the best way to do that, in my opinion. If they wanted to sign a prodding possession WR, they should just tear up Nelson's ceremonial deal and sign him to a cheap 1-year pact.
  20. With the talent this team has assembled offensively, getaway lineups are a thing of the past. They really don't lose much of anything starting Gamel, Perez or Thames. The only real offensive downgrade is when Grandal gets a breather for Pina, and even Pina has proven in the past that he can be a decent offensive catcher.
  21. Which fit’s the report of the difference between DJ and hook, hook being stronger with mechanics than DJ. Stearns not stupid, he’s gonna hire the right man for the job. It’s becoming more and more foolish to question stearns decision making ability, with the track record he’s built in the last 3+ years. Realizing this philosophy sooner would have probably helped with your weeks of Craig Kimbrel-inspired frustration.
  22. Fiers and Gomez brought back Santana, Phillips, Houser and Hader. As we know now, Santana brought back Gamel and Zavolas. Phillips was part of the package for Moustakas. So Gamel, Zavolas (doing well in Carolina), a half season of Moose (who probably wouldn't be here this year without that trade), and Houser showing the talent to be a big league pitcher. The Brewers did really well in that deal, even if you take Hader out.
  23. Do you guys remember when this team couldn't pitch, and could only score by hitting HRs?
