  1. I kind of disagree from the piggybacking standpoint - having a rotation spot/gameplan for two pitchers stretched out to be starters gives a manager some flexibility on dealing with extra inning games...as long as either starter in that piggybacking equation is able to actually start a game and give you at least 5 IP if the other one is needed for extra innings in a different game. Now, if Freddy is somehow unable to perform well when actually starting a game, then he's not part of a piggyback rotation spot - that makes him solely a long reliever and frankly would be sending him to the minors as soon as Anderson and/or Nelson are back with how the current staff is put together. And in all honesty, if any pitching staff in today's game has to complete 18 inning and 15 inning games over the course of ~9 days with only 1 offday sandwiched in there, it's going to be in tatters on the back end of that schedule. Bottom line is the offense needs to score more runs to take the load off this staff for a while. You're right ... what they are doing with Peralta isn't piggybacking the way you see it in the low minors. Those are typically 3-4 inning, 60-pitch stints. I have no doubt they are fine with Freddy throwing 100 pitches if he is effective. It's that mental hurdle of pitching in the 1st inning that seems to be a issue ... and it does hurt depth if they need to have an opener every time Freddy pitches.
  2. Looking at the caliber of prospects that have been traded in recent years for rental relievers, I think some of you are either way overvaluing the cost of someone like Smith, or are undervaluing our prospects. I could see Smith being dealt for perhaps a couple guys in the teens or 20s (think Webb, Stokes, Bello, Gatewood level) and a lottery ticket-type. I can't see Smith's value being leaps and bounds higher than Soria's was last year, and Soria brought back Medieros (#13 at the time of the deal) and a lottery ticket.
  3. This is exactly where the opener/piggybacking theory gets messed up. You simply can't hold back one of your relief arms to only pitch in a certain game because your starting pitcher cannot get out of his own head in the first inning. When you get into a situation where another starter makes a short start, or an extra inning game, you are damaging your depth. Tonight is a huge start for Freddy. If he doesn't come through, I think there's a strong possibility that he's optioned to AAA or work on his secondary pitches and get over the mental hurdle of starting games. This team is going to need to find room for Anderson this week, and likely Nelson soon as well. Having all these solid starting pitching options is a terrific spot to be in.
  4. I think he gets at least one or two more starts in AAA. There is really no room for him right now with everyone in the rotation currently pitching terrific. Anderson will be back soon as well. It is a great situation to be in for sure.
  5. So you argue that we have more players who don't like the cold, and your answer to that is "Too bad, gut it out and be colder?" I think you are making way too much of the cooler weather. All players have played in the cold. None of them like it, whether they are from Venezuela or Buffalo.
  6. This pitching staff is seemingly a big fan of leadoff walks.
  7. No ... he wants to partially control which contender he gets dealt to.
  8. Smart move on his part.
  9. IMO, it's getting very hard not to trust Guerra at this point. He's been terrific out of the pen. Jeffress is rounding into form as well. The pen is in a good place right now.
  10. I don't like how they wrote Captain Marvel as basically an invulnerable Mary Sue. What makes these characters to appealing, I think, is that they all have human weakness. I don't know why, but they decided to not give Carol Danvers any weaknesses both power wise and human wise. It doesn't help make the character very compelling.
  11. Keston Hiura is not in the San Antonio lineup tonight. Maybe just a regular day off, or is it ...
  12. Brewers putting runs up with a station-to-station philosophy today. Not pouring it on. Is that trickling it on?
  13. I think they holding houser back for Peralta game, probably Smith. A couple months from now our pen should be so strong it could be jeffress. If they are holding a reliever back just for Peralta’s start, I think that’s a mistake. It leaves the pen continuously short handed.
  14. they're sticking with their 3rd time through the order logic/math. Time for Burnes to be what he was last year. Exactly what he's needed for here. Burnes can K Baez, as he did. Gio can give up a 2 run dinger to Baez and relinquish the lead. Combination of a rested bullpen, a baserunner, 3rd time through the order, 3 straight righties and only a 1 run lead make the move to Burnes a pretty good move. That doesn't take away from the fact that Gio was masterful today. I'm OK with the move I guess, but Gio was still terrific.
  15. Good question. Gio was as close to dominant as Gio can get. Happy that aged poorly
  16. Good thing the Brewers lined up their lefty starters to face the Cubs this series
  17. I'm good with him getting the sure out there. It was a bad bunt, though. Hard, and right back at Gio. I think he had plenty of time to even try to turn two
  18. Yes, I misread your post, do agree if he keeps improving, will outperform his non-bluechip prospect rating. If he continues his improvement of his FB command he’s a 2. Then if he can command his change-up a 1. Not to shabby for a guy who a few fans were tossing around as a "throw in" at the trade deadline last year. His dominant run as a reliever in August-October seems to have given him a lot of confidence.
  19. If only 14 days of a baseball season predicted future performance too.... If anything, it's a reminder of the highs and lows that every team goes through over a 162-game season. This team will have more stretches this year where the pitching looks like trash, and fans are ready to give up. And it will have more stretches just like the last week when the pitching looks World Series-caliber.
  20. Is there a reason that McDowell is still around? Hiss bat's pretty awful, and it might be good to figure out which of Henry, Feliciano, or Fry would fare better in Biloxi. Catchers that offer elite defense are always going to stick around. That's one of the positions on the field where defense truly does matter.
  21. This!!!! Nothing more to add to this perfect post. Don't want to be a buzzkill, but there's likely just as strong of a chance that Wilkerson is activated from the IL for this weekend as he is DFA'd. Spangenburg has to be getting close to being on borrowed time, though.
  22. Hader with only 18 pitches. With a day off tomorrow, I imagine he's just fine for Friday. Will be interesting to see what the move is now with Smith's likely option.
