I'm not confident in Jeffress, but his AAA results have little bearing on that. I think he's got to get into a big league game, get the juices flowing and we'll see where his velocity is then. He has actually developed into a pitcher, not just a hard thrower, so as important as it is that he works in the mid 90's is, if he's at 92-93 and feeling good, that's all that matters. Though you would have expected him to accidentally get a clean inning in AAA by now. If JJ is throwing in the lower 90's he's going get lit up in the majors. Pitching at the MLB level is not the place to see if you can make a living with diminished velocity. That is 100% my prediction as well. I mean, Wilkerson hasn't been bad, but Houser's been better, and has a lot more upside. It wouldn't have made any sense to call up Wilkerson now if they intended on starting him against the Dodgers in Freddy's spot. This way, he provides multi-inning coverage over the next few days, and can go back down for Houser Saturday.

It's only sad when you go in expecting Arcia to provide above replacement-level offense. If expectations are tempered, and we view Arcia for what he is - an all-world defender and below-average offensive player - any offense he provides is a bonus. No, any offense would make him good. Without offense he floats between replacement level and below average.`60 OPS+ defensive wizes aren't special. He is a little more easy to stomach now that we got rid of terrible offense at 2B and C...but two pitchers in a row in your line-up is pretty bad no matter how one spins it. I guess I don't understand how Orlando Arcia always seems to get the "anything he provides outside of defense is a bonus" when Fangraphs had him tabbed as the #37 SS last year (min 300pa) out of...38 shortstops. You can lather up that defense as much as you want and he is still one of the worst SS in baseball the way he hits. Comparatively speaking Khris Davis ranked better among his LF peers overall in 2015 than Orlando Arcia ranked among his SS peers in 2018. Value is value and Orlando Arcia is killing us massively on one side of the ball just like Davis statistically did. The defensive value just isn't really there when he hits like a pitcher, just sucks it away. The problem is he isn't just below average. He is well well below average. That's fine. I mean, I'd love more offense out of the SS position too. But there really isn't anything in the pipeline of note, so I think we're just going to have to keep on hoping on Orlando to figure things out and get to the point where he's no longer an offensive liability. He's young enough that it certainly wouldn't be unheard of for him to figure it out. He's got the talent and skillset.

He's proven effective in the past. If he strings together effective outings, he'll keep his role. If not, he'll quickly join the San Antonio shuttle. I can almost guarantee he'll be used in high-leverage spots relatively soon, though. Because all the team's relievers are used that way. They don't have traditional "mop up" guys.

I don't think he's got any sort of antiquated ranking system. He plays matchups fueled by analytical research. If the numbers show Barnes should be in there to face a particular batter in a given situation, he'll be in there, regardless of if its a leverage situation or not. With Petricka sent packing, Barnes is now the LAST pitcher Counsell will pitch in high leverage situations, just behind jeffress. So what is going to be your argument when Barnes pitches in a high-leverage spot in the next week?
