  1. One in the same. Those were some rough years. It's really too bad that the minor league pitching talent didn't match the hitting talent (Fielder, Weeks, Hardy, Hall, and Lucroy and Braun later) that was coming up through the system. Those teams could have been a dynasty had Sheets not broken down and they developed a few more pitching prospects. What gives me hope about the current system is that while it may not have as many blue-chip offensive guys as 15 years ago, it is much more solid from top to bottom, and there are several young pitchers with legit major league potential.
  2. It didn't get the vitriol that cutting Nelson did, but I remember fans being upset when Eddie Lacy signed with Seattle last year. Ted Thompson decided that Lacy was done, and Lacy proved it by looking like he was running uphill in sand behind Seattle's line. I get why people are upset that Nelson is gone. He was by all accounts a team leader and great locker room guy. But he looked completely done last year, and it wasn't just because of the downgrade at QB. And the "really really low-balled" article in the JS yesterday was a very one-sided unfair article who's only purpose was to get clicks and rile up the casual fan that likes to complain about the Packers. The Packers offered Jordy a contract of about $2.5 million, which at this point is roughly what he's worth. Just like free agency ideals are changing in baseball, they are changing in football as well. No longer are GMs paying players on past production. It's about what they can offer in the future. Is there a chance that Jordy proves me wrong and lives up to his contract in Oakland. Yes. But I think the chances of that are very slim. I think trading out Crabtree for Nelson is a big downgrade for Oakland, and they'll see it soon enough.
  3. My problem with the idea of Miley is it's a page straight out of the mid-2000s Brewers handbook of "sign a bunch of junk, and start the best of them." That's how we got the likes of Victor Santos, Wes Obermueller and Wayne Franklin in those intrepid rotations. I guess I incorrectly thought that the new regime was going to focus on developing in-house pitching, and give them chances to produce. There is simply nothing that Brent Suter and Brandon Woodruff have left to prove at AAA to warrant a guy like Miley getting a spot over them. The fact that they didn't make a move other than Chacin to strengthen the pitching staff tells me that they are not in "go for it" mode, so I guess that's another reason I don't understand why they wouldn't roll with Suter and Woodruff, as those guys stand a much better chance of being part of the team when it is going for it than Miley does. I would have been more enthused about Yo, but that's my heart talking, not my head. I'm a sucker for nostalgia.
  4. If only some team had been interested in him in say, August 2016. And if I could play hindsight armchair GM, I'd win a World Series every year.
  5. I have huge hopes for Phillips, and too have been disappointed in his showing. That said, I hope his standout showing last September, and great year in Colorado Springs play a larger role in his placement than a couple dozen Spring Training at bats. I agree that he could help himself by turning on the bat soon, though.
  6. Along those same lines, a QB can't throw you the ball if you get absolutely no separation. And that's where Jordy is. His speed is shot. It was shot in 2016, but Rodgers continued to feed him by getting him the ball on scramble drills and throwing him open. Hundley obviously doesn't have near that ability, hence Jordy's decreased numbers. When receivers lose it, it typically happens quick. Could Jordy squeeze out a couple more seasons as a security blanket possession guy? Probably. But his days as a star, and even his days as an above average player, are done. And that sucks to admit, because I have been a huge Jordy fan for years.
  7. I challenge you to find someone with higher hopes for Williams than me but I don't think that would scare me off of Holland. If they are going to run with the rotation as it stands, they are going to need as many good arms in the pen as they can find. My issue with Holland was that he wasn't lights-out to the point where I'd feel comfortable handing him $7-8 million and giving up my 4th round pick. Lots of saves, but the ERA was nothing to get super excited about. But I guess the interest would depend on where the need is. I'm pretty happy with where the bullpen is, and if money is such an issue where they can't devote it to the rotation right now, I'd rather hang onto it for a potential deadline move.
  8. That would be my rotation preference. I am about 90% sure that won't be the opening day rotation, though. There are just too many signs that they are going to gift the 5th spot to Guerra or Miley. Which would be the Brewers' way of pissing in my cornflakes. Putting Guerra AND Miley in the rotation would be the equivalent of crapping in my cornflakes LOL.
  9. I think in a perfect world, they'd like to trade Braun. But because that isn't going to happen, they are stuck square-pegging him into right field or 1B. I kind of think they'd love an outfield of Yelich/Cain/Phillips, but unless they find a way to wholesale offload guys, that isn't going to happen anytime soon. It wouldn't surprise me if they were trying to flip Santana, Broxton and Aguilar. They could trade all of them, and still have plenty of depth.
  10. So would I. But Miley didn't put up a 3.78. It isn't like the starts where he got shelled don't count. The problem with putting a guy in your rotation that you know is going to get rocked every 3rd or 4th time out is that there is not much room for the other times when your other starters get rocked. Every starter has bad games. That's a ton of pressure on the bullpen to pick up the innings for a guy that's going to get shelled that much.
  11. That is an excellent summation. One could argue that Anderson is a regression candidate just to stir up the cornflakes. However, I think Anderson and Davies have a strong (and longer) track record to base some optimism off ofhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/posting.php?mode=quote&f=66&p=1092262. I'm kind of confused as to why Chacin is inked in as an upgrade. There are legit reasons for concern there. Edit: I'm lazy but I'd be interested in the home/road splits for Chacin last year. Lets just say he liked PETCO Park. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=chacijh01&t=p&year=2017 But he does have a history as a solid pitcher at Coors. I just wish it was more recent.
  12. For a team that missed the playoffs by one game last year, those 7 starts where he got shelled would seem to me like they might be a big deal.
  13. They team will likely need 9-10 starters at least throughout the season. It's not a matter of if Suter and Woodruff are better than the crap they tossed out there last year. It's a matter of if the 9th or 10th guy on the depth chart is. That's where I feel Stearns has dropped the ball. Just one FA starter would have bumped the others down the totem pole, or off it completely. But now we are looking at either retreads like Miley, Gallardo, Guerra, or rookies like Woodruff, Burnes, Derby and Wilkerson making meaningful starts as the 6th-7th guys on the depth chart, instead of the 10th or 11th on the chart, or not even on it at all in the case of a few of them.
  14. I would put the chances of you being wrong on Miley at about 1%. Even with my most Brewer-colored goggles, I see no scenario where he doesn't suck. I hated that signing when it happened, and nothing has changed. Is it wrong that I kind of get mad every time he has a decent spring training outing? So where is this upgrade over Garza and others from last year? I just don't see the rotation as not having lost ground. I would say Chacin is an upgrade on Garza without a doubt. But right now, Chacin is Nelson's replacement, which is a big downgrade on paper. If Miley is in the rotation, they've lost ground. He's the left-handed version of Garza. I am bullish on Anderson and Davies, and Chacin should be able to put up numbers good enough to keep the team in most games. I like Suter, but if he doesn't take a big step, they will be in trouble.

  16. There are also a lot of people that are excited about this team's chances, flaws and all. I see the team's flaws, and I know they stand a strong chance of holding them back. I think that Stearns has dropped the ball in a major way from February on, and the result is a rotation with serious question marks and a positional roster that, while extremely talented, doesn't make a lot of sense. But it's March, and they have the whole season ahead of them. Could the team be bad? Sure. But I think the chances are better that they won't be. But I at least want to see them play some games before they are written off. There's no need to piss an anyone's cornflakes in March.
  17. If that unicorn can give me 200 innings of a 3.5 ERA, sign me up! Wade Miley is no unicorn.
  18. Who was saying it was? I appreciate your grounded viewpoints because they make me think outside of my fandom comfort zone, even if they irk me at times It's a baseball message board. In March. It's all in good fun in the end. For the record, any projection system saying the Brewers have the 10th best rotation in baseball is seriously flawed in my opinion.
  19. But how could this be? The rotation is considered the achilles heel of the team. Sometimes projections are just crap. PECOTA had the 2015 Royals winning 72 games.
  20. Who gets defensive now? Touche But I love the Brewers, and it's March. I'm sorry, I'm not quite ready to write them off.
  21. He blocked me years ago when I called him a Boras shill. That's funny as hell. And seemingly 100% right.
  22. +1 Don't tell them that, though. They'll only get defensive.
  23. This I agree with. I think he had a grand plan coming into the offseason that was only half executed.
  24. I too wish they would have done more, but to call the team mediocre when they were one game from the playoffs, and made drastic offensive improvements to clean up deficiencies, I believe is shortsighted. I mean hell, might as well not even watch this year. When do the Packers start training camp?
  25. Some poor defense in the 1st, and a leadoff HR in the 2nd, then settled in fine. I don't think it changes anything. He's in the rotation to start the year. Unfortunately I believe you are 100% correct. I wish he was competing for the #5 spot instead of the #4, but I like his chances at effectiveness much more than Miley or Guerra. I think we've reached the point of trying to make the best of an unfortunate situation.
