If they would've signed one of the 30+ year olds in free agency would he have been then too? Apples and oranges. Signing one of those guys would be an obvious upgrade. Miley demonstrably is not.

The only thing I can figure is that the Brewers determined that the value just wasn't there. This will be a fun bonus storyline to pay attention to as we get into the season.

Well, today is the day we'll find out of the Brewers are going to go with Wade Miley in the rotation, or if they will make the smart decision. I have to admit, I'm kinda hoping for a 14-13 Brewer win.

Salary isn't the problem when looking at mid-season acquisitions. It's the prospect capital needed to get it done. Good luck getting a TOR guy without giving up at least one or two of Woodruff, Burnes, Peralta or Ortiz. That's basically cutting off your nose to spite your face then.

With all due respect, that is garbage. Many folks on here have laid out their issues with Suter in particular. So much so that I don't even need to mention them and you know what they are. People are acting like there is an either/or choice between using the guys we have or bringing in some upper echelon talent. The smart play was to do both. It's not about building depth, it's about building quality depth. You are going to need quality depth if you really consider yourself a contender. I'd feel much better with Suter, Woodruff, Burnes as my 6th, 7th and 8th options. There isn't one team that is seriously considered a contender that has guys like Gallardo/Miley/Guerra/Suter fighting it out for the last two spots in their rotation. That's why this season is shaping up to be a mandate on Stearns. If these free agent pitchers go on to have big years, while the Brewers have a prolific offense but hover around .500 due in large part to faltering pitching, the second guessing will be deafening. As of now, I think the team is probably a Wild Card contender if they get solid, injury-free years out of Anderson and Davies, Chacin manages to hold his own, and they get a break-out performance from either Suter, Guerra or Woodruff. Is that possible? Sure. Probable? Likely not. If Anderson or Davies go down for any sort of extended absence, and Nelson can't quickly return to form around June, we may be in for a lot of 12-10 finals.

Here are my thoughts ... if the plan is to go with Suter, Woodruff or even Guerra, I can understand why this did it. Stearns's mantra has been young and controllable talent, and those guys arguably fall in line with that (maybe not Guerra, but whatever). If the plan is to gift Miley with a rotation spot, when he really hasn't shown much outside his career norms (can get outs, but prone to blow-ups), then it's a big step backwards. If they are going to grow a contender, they need to groom homegrown guys who will be effective and affordable, and not play below-average band-aids. Miley is the type of move Doug Melvin would have made in 2004 when the next best home-grown option pulling up Chris Saenz or Ben Hendrickson from AA. I mean, you don't tell your fanbase that you aren't going to acquire a pitcher unless they are a "needle mover", then go with a guy like Miley as your #4. They may very well be able to trade for a TOR-type pitcher, but that pitcher will more than likely either be already on an expensive contract, or getting very close to it. It is also going to cost a much larger sum than whatever their 4th round draft pick would bring in.

If Lorenzo Cain wasn't going to be 32 in a few weeks, I'd be more on board with this line of thinking.

Those guys only made 35 total starts. You are basically swapping Miley for that group which is a parallel move at best. Now we are literally talking about Chacin replacing Nelson. That ain't an upgrade. Pretty sure Miley gets the ball tomorrow, and they need to decide by Thursday whether to pay him a roster bonus to retain him. If he gets shelled again tomorrow, it wouldn't surprise me if they cut bait. Despite his strong few starts to open camp, it doesn't make any sense for the team to start a guy that is going to get shelled every 3rd time out.

Good post. I think you hit the nail on the head here. Unfortunately, good experienced GMs have a Plan B, C and D already in place in case in case Plan A doesn't come to fruition. Perhaps Plan B and C is to roll with guys like Suter and Guerra, but to me that seems dubious at best. I would say as this offseason has turned out, it will serve as a strong mandate on the way Stearns is running the front office. They made huge commitments to shore up their offense and defense, but seemingly didn't see it all the way through, which has led to a roster that is constructed oddly, to say the least, and a pitching staff that leaves a lot to be desired in the eyes of most fans.

Super surprised he got this kind of deal this late in the game. Good for him for sticking to his price and not caving. I am disappointed he isn’t a Brewer, but it isn’t the end of the world. Anderson and Davies and pray for rain I guess. Gonna be rough in a dome though.

Allen Hurns is under consideration for the Packers. Big receiver at 6'3", 210. Ran a 4.55 coming out, which isn't blazing, but not slow either. He is only 26. Personally, I'd rather see them target a more explosive WR in a trade, but Hurns wouldn't be a bad depth signing. I have a feeling he's going to cost more than what the Packers are willing to pay, though.

And I would be willing to wager that there were plenty of Eagle fans calling the team's defensive backfield a disaster at this time last year. Thank you for researching this. It is a terrific way to put all the armchair GM stuff in perspective.

Unmitigated disaster? Come on LOL. It sure is a good thing player acquisition can happen after the month of March. There are several solid veteran free agents still readily available, and some younger guys that have talent. Plus there are plenty of other solid players available via trade, which is another route I expect them to pursue. No one is saying the signings of Graham and Wilkerson don't carry inherent risks, either. But I am 99% sure that Graham and Wilkerson, when combined, will have a greater impact on the 2018 team than the current version of Jordy Nelson would, at roughly the same salary cap hit.

Inside info? Speculation? Wishful thinking? All of the above? I guess I really have no problem with his getting shelled every 5th day in Colorado Springs, but I just don't want to see him taking a turn for the ML club.

LOL Hot Take alert! Please don't let Packer Twitter-like pronouncements take this thread over. Burnett is a solid player, but has declined as a playmaker and has had injury trouble. And Point Beer is 100% correct that Josh Jones was drafted exactly for this scenario. Also the team LOVES Kentrell Brice. The team has several bounce-back type DBs in mind that they can and will bring in on cheap deals. Pettine has had a habit of taking unheralded guys and turning them into good players in the defensive backfield in the past. Let this play out before writing them off. It's only March 20!

If Villar puts up a .265/.315/.400 line along with 40-45 SBs and solid defense at 2B, I wholeheartedly disagree that he won't have much trade value. I think that we'll see a Villar/Sogard soft platoon with Villar getting most of the time there. Perez will continue playing all over the place , and will be the main back-up at 3B and SS.

I saw that the team's official Twitter account deleted the original tweet and video that went viral, and replaced it with a new one. The only change was that the new one doesn't have Vogt singing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". I assume it must be a copyright issue, as apparently that particular song has had its share of those type of issues in the past. Too bad no one from the Brewers has actually explained what happened, though. You know, because that's kind of their job as social media people.

You make it sound like we know Miley is for sure not one of our best 5 starters. I'm not saying he is but I think there is definitely a chance he is. I disagree. He is not, and he's going to prove it very quickly if gifted a rotation spot, in my opinion. Nothing he's done in spring training has changed the idea that he is a pitcher capable of getting outs at times, but is prone to frequent blow-up games. That is not an effective pitcher.

I can’t believe Jake was acquired for so little. I would have loved him at that price. No kidding!! Anderson Davies Chacin Odorizzi I know why Odorizzi was acquired for so cheap. He's basically a right-handed Miley.

Who knows what it would take. The Nats stand to lose Cole on waivers if he doesn't make the 25 man roster. I'd probably offer a package of Trent Grisham and a lottery ticket. An arguable Top 10 prospect for a guy they are likely going to cut? No thanks! It would be a low-level minor leaguer or a non-prospect like Tristan Archer that they could stash for depth.
