  1. Yep, which is why I believe the makeup of this roster is odd, if not stupid. Everyone is going to agree that having depth is nice, but typically on MLB teams, there is a pecking order of guys who are superstars, guys who are clear starters, and guys who are role players and reserves. Professional athletes by and large have big egos, and taking guys who have the talent to be superstars and clear starters, and telling them they are going to be platoon players or even reserves typically doesn't play well in the locker room. That point is alluded to in Shaw's quotes in Nightengale's story yesterday. It points to the fact that these guys are in the dark as to what is happening, and that is causing frustration. We can scream until we're blue in the face that depth is a good thing and these guys need to man up and play their role, but that's not really how professional athletes are wired. I am bullish on the team's chances this year, but if they fail to live up to expectations, I fear it isn't going to be entirely because of a lack of solid starting pitching. The stupid roster make-up could theoretically cause locker room issues at some point. Both of those problems are going to be on Stearns's plate, too, because he's the only one that had the power to do something about them and decided not to.
  2. I think that there is probably a .005% chance that other MLB teams care about Thames' and Santana's spring training stats. I think the only time those come into play are for rookies trying to make their first MLB roster, or reclamation projects. Thames and Santana are neither. Thames is on a cheap deal, provides some positional flexibility and give you power, albeit streaky power. Santana is younger and cheaper. Both have a year of 30+ HRs that is much, much more valuable than a handful of Spring Training at-bats.
  3. Another case of the Brewers having an overabundance of corner OF/1B-types, but for some reason wanting to hang on to all of them. Trading one of our 18 first basemen to the Yankees makes almost too much sense, which means it won't happen. At this point I can't figure out if it's the market that is shutting the Brewers out of making a deal, or if Stearns is scared or hesitant to pull the trigger on one. I don't believe for a second that there isn't interest out there in guys like Santana, Broxton, Thames, Aguilar and even Choi (to a lesser degree). It isn't like these guys aren't moving. Souza got a pretty nice return back. I'd love to have Anthony Banda in the upper minors, or even in the #5 spot in the rotation.
  4. Awesome to be able to do this! Win-Loss Record: 92-70 Playoffs: Yes Highest Playoff Level Achieved: NLCS All Star Game Representatives: Yelich, Cain, Davies, Knebel Offensive Player of the Year: Shaw Pitcher of the Year: Zach Davies, who will make the jump to a TOR-type starter. Most Surprising Player: Brent Suter, who is going to put up solid #3 numbers. Nelson is also going to come back in early June and be his old self, giving the team a top 5 rotation Most Disappointing Player: Ryan Braun, because he's going to be fighting injuries again. I hope I'm wrong. Also, Santana will fight injury and ineffectiveness, and the team will be sorry they didn't trade him this offseason ... for whatever was being offered. Rookie of the Year: Taylor Williams is going to be dominant at the back end of that bullpen. A future closer.
  5. This is the thread that got locked: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=36521
  6. VERY interesting tidbit I got this morning. The Packers are doing their homework on Patrick Peterson, and have been in contact with the Cardinals regarding what he would cost via trade. The Cardinals are clearly rebuilding, and Peterson is under team control through the 2020 season. The Packers see him as a top-flight CB who is in his prime (27 years old), and his salary is roughly the same as what they would have paid Fuller had the Bears not matched the offer sheet. Obviously the draft capital cost is going to be pretty significant. Gute is extremely hesitant to deal #14, but the other picks are available. It would likely cost at least the team's 2nd Rounder, and probably a 4th and 5th as well, if not more.
  7. While I'm still a bit puzzled as to why they didn't acquire a starting pitcher, I believe they made the correct decision choosing Suter and Woodruff to round out the starting rotation. I do wonder if Suter would have been ticketed for long relief or AAA, though, had Miley not gotten hurt? Regardless, I'm sure the team is likely going to need Miley (ugh), along with Guerra, Wilkerson, and perhaps even Burnes and Derby before the year is out. Hopefully Suter and Woodruff can prove a lot of us wrong and their production will prove that the perceived need for more starting pitching was off-base. As for the position player group, not a lot of surprises here. I'm sure Stearns is tearing up the phones this week trying to find takers for Aguilar and/or Choi. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see a small trade or two done this week. It's also a little disappointing that they sent Phillips down, and that they haven't found a taker for Broxton yet. But having those guys at AAA, along with Wren and Stokes, is really solid OF depth.
  8. Packers meeting with Breaux tomorrow. Would be a solid signing if healthy.
  9. Physical traits very similar to Nelson, but obviously much younger. Not really a speed guy, but is faster than Nelson, as most WRs are. He wouldn't be a lid-lifter, but has the potential to be a solid #2. Most of his productivity has come out of the slot , though, which is also Cobb's preferred spot. I wonder if Cobb would be on the chopping block or may be trade bait if Matthews were brought in?
  10. Yep ... Williams excels as a slot corner as well, the position that Randall would have played if he weren't traded. Will also provide veteran leadership to that young group of corners. House is still on the radar as well, along with other veteran options (Breeland). The team is doing its homework on the top corners in the draft, and will very likely draft one high. Don't underestimate the idea of trading a pick for an established corner as well. The Packers are seeing talent being dealt for lower-level picks than you'd think, and are on the lookout for teams looking to dump perhaps a higher salaried CB for a 4th-5th round pick. That's where all those compensatory picks are really going to come into play. Also the top pick at the beginning of the 4th round (that they got from Cleveland) holds high value.
  11. I'd go with option 3. He's already said he doesn't want to go to a new team, and this would give him the opportunity to rehab as long as needed. I know $100,000 isn't a lot in the whole scheme of things, but why throw that money away? No one is going to be competing against the Brewers to sign an injured Wade Miley.
  12. I feel bad for Miley, but not bad for the Brewers, if that makes any sense. This actually isn't a bad situation, as they will be able to stash him at AAA more than likely, and he can rehab there and come back hopefully in a month or two. I honestly have no idea what the timeline is for an injury like this.
  13. As much as I don't want to agree with this, the tarot cards are lining up that way. Counsell's quotes after Miley's injury yesterday seemingly indicated that he had the team made. It wouldn't surprise me if they still sent Woodruff down, even if Miley is laid up for awhile. I agree that we are probably looking at Suter and Guerra to round out the rotation at this point. It wouldn't surprise me to see Broxton or Aguliar flipped for some bottom-of-the-roster lefty specialist to take Logan's place if his injury is significant.
  14. Its spring training. Unless something was way off in terms of mechanics or velocity that indicates an injury, I couldn't care less what results the pitchers get from game to game and there are many reasons why. Having said that, a guy like Suter is gonna have blow up games. He just doesn't have the stuff to overcome bad command. We saw this last year. It's what limits his ability to go deep into games. Same issue. Yep, unfortunately we are to the point of deciding who of Suter, Guerra, Miley or Woodruff is going to have the fewest blow-up games, and which of them is going to do the best job of keeping damage limited. With Miley's injury, who knows now? I like Suter, because when he's "on", he's a fun pitcher to watch. But when he's not "on" he doesn't have the stuff to work though it, and is going to get hit around pretty good. There have been some very good pitchers over the years that have been able to carve out great careers throwing Suter's sort of stuff (Jamie Moyer comes to mind), but they were typically command masters. I don't know if Suter will ever get there, but if he does, he's the type of guy who could have a long career.
  15. I think Villar is going to be the main 2B over Perez and Sogard, but I would say the rest of this looks about right. They might switch Villar and Arcia around, and if Villar starts hot, I could see him in the leadoff spot at times.
  16. I admittedly have not been pulling for the guy, but that really sucks. No one wants to lose a spot because of an injury. I wonder how that effects his opt-out clause?
  17. It's important to remember that he isn't the Dalai Lama of pitching coaches either. His coaching hasn't been the magic elixir for everyone. Wily Peralta arguably has had the best "stuff" of any pitcher with the team in the last decade, and Johnson couldn't get through to him. I am very happy he is the team's pitching coach, but I think some credit for their success does go to Anderson, Davies and Nelson as well. Sometimes pitchers just figure it out and go on to have success.
  18. Miley through 4 now. Two hits, no runs. I hope Woodruff has a lease ready to sign in Colorado Springs. I guess we're going to have to deal with the "Miley Blow-Up Game" every third or fourth time through the rotation for awhile. That's what makes me dislike pitchers like Miley. They show enough in 1/2 or 3/4 of their starts to give you hope, then lose focus and get destroyed. But teams regularly give them shots because the "potential is there", even if the same results seem to happen year after year.
  19. Miley is through two innings and is pitching well. One hit and a couple Ks.
  20. I understand it's very difficult to trade him so it's really moot, but the larger point I was trying to make is that I hope management doesn't push a failed plan too long if it's not going to work. No one likes admitting mistakes. But regardless of how it looks, once they have enough evidence that the window isn't currently open, they should be moving pieces that have comparatively high immediate value. As I said, maybe the plan will work and I'm all for giving it a chance. Heck, for as bad as Espino, Milone, Peralta and Garza were last year, as a group they went 11-10 in their starts by my count. So in bottom line wins and losses, the Brewers didn't fare much worse in games they started than in games started by everyone else. Maybe my math is wrong. How long is "too long"? You seemed to imply in your initial post that they should put guys on the market early this season if things don't start well.
  21. If the Brewers can't legitimately contend this year because they don't have the pitching, I wouldn't waste probably the most productive year of Cain's deal. If they have to restart the rebuild, a 34 year old center fielder is unlikely to be the cornerstone of that effort, especially at the price. Though I assume you were being sarcastic. Just my opinion. No sarcasm needed. You are advocating trading off a guy they just signed to a 5-year, $80 million deal in the first part of his first season if things don't go well. Not only is that impossible due to his no-trade protection, it would be very short-sighted. Could he be on the block a few years down the road? Maybe, but that likely wouldn't be until 2020, and a lot of bad things would need to happen to make that a possibility.
  22. That is an extremely myopic viewpoint. Spring Training stats don't really matter, unless you are a rookie or a reclamation project. And right now, that is what is vying for the 4-5 spots in the rotation. If Miley getting shelled now leads the team to cut bait, rather than getting shelled in games that matter, I'd rather Miley make the decision easy for them now. If ST stats don’t matter then why do you(others, whoever) hope Miley gets shelled? It literally does not matter apparently. If you realize that, and assuming it is true, I am pretty confident David Stearns Co. knows that too. That being said players fighting for roster spots I would say performance matters. Those guys likely aren’t experimenting like veterans who are assured their spot. Chase Anderson is tinkering around so that is a different story. A guy like Suter or Miley is likely giving their all every time. I am sure they have scouts looking at them and figuring out which is best well past their statistics etc. They will pick who they believe is the best option and I will be happy with that. I’m guessing most of the people who want him to get shelled haven’t watched him throw a single pitch this spring. They just hated the signing, hate Miley, and want nothing to do with him no matter what he does in spring training. Your argument makes absolutely no sense. Did you even read my post? Miley would most assuredly fall into the "reclamation project" category. Yes, Spring Training stats matter for those guys.
  23. Sorry, you lost me after "looking to move Cain ..."
  24. Yeah, it would seem more plausible to just ask for a great outing tonight from Suter, and a good outing from Woodruff next time out. I think Miley will need to do something amazing to get a job. I think the Crew really likes Suter and Woodruff. I hope you are right. The things that Counsell has said about Miley scare me, though. Haudricourt and McCalvy basically writing him into the rotation also scares me, although that could just be them being lazy too.
