  1. I want them to sign Cobb because he is 30 years old, has a history as a TOR pitcher, doesn't have a ton of milage on his arm, and is primed to put up good numbers two years removed from TJ surgery. I want Cobb for the playoffs, because I don't trust Chase Anderson as my #1 against Kershaw or Strasburg. Cobb also isn't in their class, but the gap becomes closer. At 30 years old, he is young enough to be a factor in 2018 and in 2020-21. Arrieta is much the same, but I see more red flags with him.
  2. That's the problem. You are removing variables, and you can't do that in the real world. Yes, if money, age and arm wear wasn't an issue, I'd take Arrieta. But then, if those weren't issues, he would have resigned with the Cubs long ago. Fact is, they are, and Cobb has him beat in all those variables. He is going to be cheaper, he is nearly 2 years younger, and he doesn't have near the milage on his arm. I mean, what are you trying to get at? In a vacuum, Arrieta is the better pitcher. But life doesn't operate in a vacuum. Arrietta being 1 year older doesn't really seem to move the needle for that variable. Cobb having 2 TJ also seems to push it towards Arrietta with how much he's pitched over the years. Also, Arrietta is a better overall pitcher when he's on. The only thing going for Cobb in this scenario is the money, and that he could get his change up back. Arrieta is 19 months older. So yes, that does make a difference. Cobb has had 2 Tj surgeries? I thought it was only one. Do you have a source that indicates he's had 2? I agree that Arrieta is better when "on". Dude, I am not anti Arrieta. I like him a lot. He's had a ton of success, and I think he's got a HUGE chip on his shoulder, especially against the Cubs. Depending on what he ends up signing for, he may very well have the better value. I just think Cobb is a solid choice as well.
  3. And with that, can we PLEASE stop talking about the Cubs, or at least create a "Cubs are Going to be Great" thread in the Major Leagues forum, led by our resident Cubby fan, so that I can NOT read it? I know we have heard next to nothing in days about Cobb, but lets not turn this into "we stand no chance this year" thread in March.

  5. I'd be in favor of either one. The milage on Arrieta's arm is worrisome, but he keeps himself in terrific shape, and is a bulldog on the mound. I like both of them much, much better than Lynn.
  6. Correct, he's a 2. If he get's his change-up back, he's a #1
  7. What’s his old number being used mean? Miley could be paid for luv to get it back or he could just choose a different number.. Blue writing = sarcasm
  8. Nostalgic ex-brewer love. Happens all the time... Well, in fairness, the Brewers are theoretically weak at catcher (or at least its an unknown), while Lucroy is technically the top choice on the market, and is still unsigned. Seeing the match isn't necessarily completely out of left field.
  9. The problem with that, at least with Adames, is that he has no major league track record, and doesn't profile as a major league shortstop defensively. You can't just stick guys wherever on defense and expect them to be able to hack it out there. The Brewers have a history of doing that (Braun at 3B, Betancourt at SS and 1B, Fransisco at 1B, Kotsay in CF, Villar at SS) that has backfired over and over again. No more video game defense! Play the players where they profile best!
  10. LOL, I would say the exact same thing for Davies. Clancy definitely has players that he likes, and those he doesn't like.
  11. I could see a deal like this happening IF the team signs a FA starting pitcher. Of course, it would also strengthen the system for a potential prospects for TOR starter as well. The Padres have some nice pieces in their system I'd love to have.
  12. They would probably set a record for most strikeouts in a season combined. Heck, Santana may do that all by himself.
  13. Can we get the topic back on Cobb and stop talking about how great the Cubs are going to be? It's giving me a stomach ache. So the Mets are signing Vargas (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/02/mets-sign-jason-vargas.html), which would indicate that they are probably done tinkering with their rotation. Not that they were ever really linked to the top FA starters, but it does eliminate a possibility. We are starting to finally see an uptick in FA movement now, which would indicate that we should be seeing some of these bigger fish go soon as well. There's not much left for secondary starting pitching, besides maybe Tillman, so if the Brewers are going to make another move, it will likely be for one of Arrieta, Cobb or Lynn. Obviously if money was no object, I'd love Arrieta, but when taking value into account, I think Cobb is the choice.
  14. I guess I'm also worried that if we don't sell high on Santana, he stands a good chance of losing value. I see him as a little more of a regression candidate than I do others, and he hasn't exactly been durable in his young career. Of course, it could be that other teams see that as well, and are making offers accordingly.
  15. Why does starting Santana or Braun in RF negate the defensive improvement in CF or LF? You still have 2/3 of your outfield able to play GG defense while RF gets no worse than it was last year. I guess what I'm arguing is that you don't acquire Yelich and Cain unless you are putting a stronger emphasis on defense. Leaving your worst 2017 defender in Santana in place negates that emphasis.
  16. For Lucroy, I'd go two years, $15 million with a pair of team options at $10 million each. Pina... maybe he can be an asset. At worst, he's a decent #2 catcher, and some teams may see him as an upgrade over their #1. The team control would be good, too. Sign Luc, go with Vogt as the #2, deal Pina for a couple of lottery tickets... Nope, you want a strong defender as your #2 catcher. If Lucroy ends up on this team, it would be Vogt taking the bullet. I'm not trading Pina for a couple rookie ballers. That doesn't make sense now or in the future.
  17. The long and short of it is that this roster makes little sense with Santana, Braun and Thames all on it. If Braun is the everyday LF, that means Cain or Yelich are playing out of position in RF. If Santana is the everyday RF, he largely negates the defensive upgrades Cain and Yelich bring to CF and LF, respectively. If Braun is the everyday RF, at this point in his career, he'd likely be similar to Santana defensively, which isn't good. The only OF that makes sense for the moves they made is Yelich in LF, Cain in CF and Phillips in RF. That would likely be the best defensive OF this team has ever fielded. Braun would be able to get occasional starts in LF, which would kick Yelich to CF and Cain to RF, where he would be a little bit of a waste, but at least he has the arm talent to play out there. Otherwise Braun is going to have to play 1B, perhaps in a platoon with Thames. I know a lot of you like Santana's bat. I do too. But there's just no logical fit for him on this roster, the way it's being constructed. You don't acquire Cain and Yelich, two superior defenders, and then stick with Santana in RF. I still say he'll be dealt, and likely soon.
  18. Because it's February 15th? Why would the Brewers offer it though? This late in the offseason, the teams should have all the negotiating power, especially with the bottom barrel free agents. All the incentives are what makes me think Stearns anticipates Miley coming north and hanging around for awhile. I think it's just the opposite. Stearns offered all the incentives knowing Miley likely wouldn't be in the Brewers' rotation, but would give them a veteran at Colorado Springs in case of injury. He's cheap insurance in AAA.
  19. Eduardo Rodriguez had a decent 2017 and doesn’t become a free agent until 2022. He’s a player I would love to receive in a deal for Domingo. He had knee surgery in November is is likely out until possibly June.
  20. While he may have been marginally more useful than Wade Miley, it wouldn't have been significantly enough to warrant any sort of contract offer. Just another #4-5-type, which the Brewers have plenty of.
  21. Well, at least it appears that the dominoes are slowly starting to call. Garcia is the perfect signing for the Blue Jays, because he will be easily flipped at the deadline when they are 15 games behind the Yankees and Red Sox. Lots of big names still out there, though. I imagine those guys are getting antsy.
  22. That's baseball, and these guys are professionals that get that. I doubt Stearns is worried about what Gallardo or Miley thinks if they sign Cobb.
  23. No, it really doesn't. That $12 million option was brokered to buy out his arbitration years when he was a young, promising, underpaid pitcher. There will be a problem and overpaid players in any system the MLB implements. The NBA has a hard cap and harsh penalties for going over it and there are hilariously overpaid vets. That's how things go. Miley's contract was one that bought out arbitration. Miley made $500k when he made the All Star game at age 25 and threw 200 good innings at age 26. He got a free agency buyout/arbitration buyout contract around then. That's what we want "smart" small markets to do. Miley struggled as the contract went on. I don't understand why people need to see every player compensated 100% fairly for the production that the player has at that millisecond of time. Why does it bother people so much? The system can be improved but Matt Garza was recently overpaid, Travis Shaw is underpaid. It evens out and for the most part those guys have their production get evened out over time and it evens out on most MLB rosters. Miley signed his arbitration buyout extension as a 28-year-old member of the Red Sox. Coming off a year where he went 8-12 with a 4.34 ERA. I agree there will be overpaid players regardless of the system in place, but this was a case of a big market team throwing money at an at-most league average pitcher. In any case, that doesn't change the fact that the market continues to move at a snail's pace, despite many agents claiming that Darvish was holding up the market.
  24. Well, I guess the people that thought that a Darvish signing, coupled with the opening of spring camps, would open up the floodgates on the rest of the market were flat-out wrong. The continued lack of activity is actually making me kind of mad, because I don't know who to blame. I waffle back and forth between blaming players who are pricing themselves out of the market, and greedy owners/GMs who are lowballing them. In truth, it's probably a little of both. But looking at the Wade Miley signing last night, and seeing that he only became a free agent because the Orioles declined a $12 million option, I think that kind of defines what's wrong with baseball's free agent market.
  25. Nope, I refuse to believe this will happen. ... but I will be very discouraged if/when it does.
