  1. Well, Pirates are officially in "tear it down" mode. The Giants don't exactly have a great system, either. Shaw and Beede seem to be their top two prospects.
  2. When presented with it at first it appeared that Haudricourt thought it was some random Twitter user throwing the idea at him, there was no reference to Jim Bowden. My perception was Haudricourt initially responded as a hey, look at this ridiculous thing this person just said to me type of response. He seemingly took it more seriously upon learning it was an actual report, stating: “What I have learned about Stearns and Co is that they "check in" on nearly every available player, just to make sure they know cost. Very big on due diligence. Doesn't mean it will hapoen.” My initial internal reaction to that was something along the lines of, well why don’t you “check in” with your team sources to see if there is any truth to the rumor?... but then decided to keep that thought to myself. That is pretty much the definition in the difference between the resources devoted to Packers coverage by Gannett compared to the Brewers. Among Gannett's army of Packer reporters is one guy (Aaron Nagler) who's only job is basically to search out Packers coverage from national sources every morning, then retweet it. I've found the Packers beat guys to pretty much be on top of most every breaking story, or close behind. But with Brewer coverage, with only Haudricourt, 1/2 time Roziak and McCalvy on the MLB side, coverage is spotty, especially this time of year. And Stearns seems much more willing to speak with media types than Ted Thompson ever was.
  3. No offense to our beat writers, but they kind of suck when it comes to rumors etc. Rumors/Big news always comes from the other teams local writers or a Rosenthal type. That's absolutely true that the national guys tend to break news on executed or just about to be executed trades/FA signings. I personally think our beat writers do have a good sense on general strategy of the front office. It's part of why I'm softening on my "Hader will start" and going with more of a "Hader should start". You can disagree if you want, the beat writers absolutely could be wrong...or maybe they are right, but a perfect storm of potential moves lines up for Stearns and he pulls the trigger...or maybe just the small obvious moves happen. I hope Stearns doesn't get too carried away in trying to be creative. These other GM's are sharp guys, it isn't like there are 29 Dombrowski's to take advantage of. When presented Bowden's rumor this morning, Haudricourt basically laughed it off. McCalvy at least took it as an outside possibility. Roziak is covering UWM basketball, so he's not going to be any help.
  4. I can't imagine the Yankees, Mets or Braves would have any problem fitting Moose into their salary structure. You are right about what would be needed to trade away Shaw. The return would have to be huge. I'm talking 2-3 Top 100 guys. Or a high-end starting pitcher. Maybe a Shaw for Archer deal? Show could take over for Longoria.
  5. This "rumor" seems to scream of Boras artificially creating a market for his guys. Besides a cheap salary, why would a team give up the haul of prospects its going to take to land Shaw when they could just go out and sign Moustakas? Also, I would imagine that Moustakas would be signed to play 3B, as he is great defensively, which would allow the Brewers to move Shaw over to 1B. That would make Thames and Aguilar trade bait.
  6. After two decent to good seasons in 2013 and 2014, Lohse fell off a cliff in 2015, seemingly out of nowhere. Suppan was decent to poor in 2007 and 2008 before falling off a cliff in 2009. Somehow Looper magically won 14 games for that same 2009 club, but did it with some of the best run support in the league. I guess what I'm getting at is if they sign Lynn, try to get him to sign a 2-year deal LOL. Or don't expect much out of him in the 2020 season.
  7. Choi is the new version of Cooper ... if he is playing MLB innings for the Brewers this year, I'll be surprised. Considering the team was signing retreads off the street to play 1B in Colorado, I'm sure that is the case. And it is almost a given that Choi is going to put up monster numbers in Colorado Springs, and have many Brewer fans begging for a call up at the first hint of a 2018 Thames slump.
  8. Not me. It sucked when the cubs finally got their first World Series win in 108 years or whatever it was, and I won't like it if the vikes finally get a SB win either. I enjoy being able to laugh at their zero championships, and I don't want to lose that. Yep, Packers/Vikings has overtaken Packers/Bears for me. The Vikings history of ineptness is the one saving grace the Packers have over them. I too want that to continue. Also, I know all teams have bandwagon fans, but the Vikings are the worst. Paper champions every year.
  9. Darvish - Sure, if he'd come to Milwaukee. Seems like he has his heart set on a big market, though. Cobb - Eh, he's OK, but I don't see what he's going to give you that Chacin isn't going to give you at a much, much lower salary. Lynn - Hard NO! I am jaded because every former Cardinal pitcher the Brewers pick up Seems to turn to crap. Thanks Suppan, Lohse and Looper! Arrieta - His signing would make me nervous due to the money involved, but he doesn't seem like the type that would go in the tank after signing a big deal. Very competitive dude. Keeps himself in top physical shape. Has been very durable. If they are intent on signing someone, and Darvish doesn't want to go to Milwaukee, I wouldn't mind Arrieta.
  10. But when you throw in the contract that will be needed to sign Walker, and the years of commitment that would likely overlap the readiness of Dubon, Diaz and Huera, it becomes a question of value. Also, if they sign Walker, they are pretty much giving up all hope for Villar, and bottoming-out his value.
  11. The team's history signing free agent starters has jaded many of us into believing that any starter they sign to a large deal isn't going to live up to his contract, especially in the last part of it. I think if the team operates with that mentality, it's a mistake. At the same time, the team's history also suggests that there isn't much success to be had home-growing successful MLB starting pitchers. Really, over the last decade, trades for top-end starters on reasonable contracts have proven to be the most successful ... but those are very expensive and rare.
  12. Matt Garza was never, ever in Arrieta's class as a pitcher. At his best, Garza was probably a #3-4 on a good team, and a marginal #2 on a bad one. Arrieta is a legit #1 pitcher. If you are looking at the Brewers from a few years ago, Garza was Marcum as far as upside, while Arrieta is Greinke/Sabathia/Sheets territory. Yes, I wish he was 28 years old, but like Briggs pointed out, the guy is a workout fanatic. And big contracts do not nearly come close to hamstringing teams as they did 10 years ago.
  13. Looking around the league, Walker may want 3-4 years at 10 million plus per year, but i see the odds being slim at best that he finds a team who meets those desires. I'm really curious to see if Villar can bounce back from his nightmare season, so i'm fine with standing pat at second base, but if Stearns can wait out Walker and get a deal for two years, i'd be fine with that also. There are going to be many free agents who went into this offseason with really lofty dollar amounts floating in their heads, but at some point will have to accept a reality that the market for their services simply isn't what they hoped for. What makes you think "standing pat" means Villar gets his job back? He was behind both Sogard and Perez at the end of 2017 and both those guys are still on the roster. Add in Walker and he was 4th string. In this case, "standing pat" means that Villar is given the opportunity to prove that he is the 2016 version and not the 2017 version. Because the 2016 version of Villar is infinitely better than anything Sogard or Perez, or Walker really, is going to provide. And I have a feeling you know that.
  14. I don't get the infatuation with Fangio. I mean, if they wanted to get away from the Capers defense, getting a guy who has been connected at the hip to Capers probably isn't the way to do it. Personally I would have rather seen Gus Bradley coaxed into coming to Green Bay, because I think the team's current defensive personnel lends itself a little better to his scheme. Pettine is a good choice, though, and is known for getting the most out of his talent. With the Jets and Bills, his scheme made poor players average, average players good, and good players great. There is a lot of talent on that side of the ball for him to work with. The main focus is getting pressure, and CBs locking up receivers with tight man-to-man coverage. I think that plays to the strengths of King and Randall. Getting QB pressure is the key, though. Look for them to spend pick #14 on an outside LB/pass rusher in the Terrell Suggs mold, or attack that position in free agency.
  15. Well, I'd certainly trade a big chunk of our 7, if not all of them, for a World Series title. Unfortunately, that trade deal is not available - and has never been available. The point is I'd take the Cubs World Series title and crappy farm over the Brewers' current situation. Top-end prospects are nice, but the end goal is always Major League success. If some of these stud prospects mature and can lead the Brewers to a title, great. But others are going to be used as currency.
  16. Nice find. I wouldn't be surprised if Arrieta doesn't sign until late February and after Cobb/Lynn/Darvish all sign. I'm expecting a front loaded 5/110 type deal, or 4/96ish with a 5th year vesting option. And I really hope it isn't the Brewers. Arrieta would be an "all in"-type move. There is a lot of risk involved, though. It would sure be nice to strength our rotation while weakening the Cubs', but I get the fear of backfire as well. If it happens, though, look for Stearns to immediately sign Walker and jettison Villar. I think another high-leverage reliever would be signed as well, and Santana would be taken off the trading block.
  17. Well, I'd certainly trade a big chunk of our 7, if not all of them, for a World Series title.
  18. Jungmann had a very nice 2nd half in 2015, so at least he made somewhat of an impact. Bradley retired in May. Lopez still has a shot as a possible reliever. Gagnon, Goforth and Reed have had cups of coffee. Houle has a chance. Mallex Smith and Carlos Rodon are quality major leagues. Wish they would have signed. David Lucroy at least looks like his brother.
  19. Well, Jorge Lopez, Nick Ramirez, Dustin Houle, Jacob Barnes and Parker Berberet are still kicking around at least. Mallex Smith and Carlos Rodon would have been nice signings. But yeah, rough year.
  20. Darn ... not the move I was hoping for. Jungmann pitched very well in Colorado last year, but I guess the writing was on the wall when he didn't get a call-up. There are 5 players on the 40-man I'd rather have seen go, though. 1. Oliver Drake 2. Wei-Chung Wang 3. Jett Bandy 4. Andrew Susac 5. Tyler Webb I imagine these guys are next on the chopping block should another signing happen.
  21. Would it be an upgrade over Walker or Villar circa 2016? No. but would it be an upgrade over career-average Sogard or the 2017 version of Villar? Yes.
  22. I like the Logan move. I think he has the potential to be the high-leverage LOOGY that the team desperately needed last year. I'm just excited to hear that the team is opening up a 40-man spot by cutting bait on one of the players that probably don't deserve to hold a spot any longer, or that there is a trade in place. At this point, I kind of expect to hear that a player was placed on waivers, and instead they were dealt, but like the spot that was created with the Baker move a couple weeks ago.
  23. If there's a delay, how tough would it be to contact Stearns, Boone's agent or Boone himself to find out what the hold-up is? That is what these guys are getting paid for. And you know this hasn't happened? Sometimes nothing is being reported because there's nothing to report. Then say that! Say "still awaiting official confirmation, which is why a 40-man move hasn't been made." Maybe it's because this offseason is just moving incredibly slow, but I just want to see some snippet of progress.
  24. Well, the current Packers personnel proved last year that they are completely ineffective in zone coverage. I'm sure you'll see some variation of the 46, along with a ton of different formations. If this is a defense that relies on players being in the right position, it wouldn't surprise me if the team makes a big effort to resign Burnett, while possibly cutting Matthews or moving him to ILB.
  25. Really depends on if you think Villar is salvageable. Maybe I'm being optimistic, but I think Villar has the talent to play closer to his 2016 level than what he did last year. Walker is a good, solid player who would make a great role player on a playoff contender. If Stearns feels that the team is a playoff contender, signing Walker wouldn't surprise me at all. But letting things ride with Villar wouldn't surprise me either, especially if he feels the team is still in the midst of a rebuild. Also, with Diaz, Dubon and Huera on the horizon at 2B, it would be nice to see Villar rebuild his trade value.
