  1. I thought they were going to lose him for sure (much like I thought when they took Perez off the 40 man after 2015 that they wouldn't get him back and that worked out well) and would have given him a 40 man spot instead of Webb. Forget his age, there's very little mileage on that arm and he can have value as a 13th pitcher by being an extra bench bat as well. This is an under the radar move with upside. Like it. He posted a 1.28 ERA and a microscopic 0.78 Whip in the 2nd half for Biloxi. He can get both lefties and righties out too. For his first year pitching, he was phenomenal. K rate wasn't spectacular but he didn't walk many. I like it as well. Ramirez is probably a pretty good sleeper pick to see MLB innings this season. The fact that he has some potential as a pinch hitter doesn't hurt, either. The fact that he can hit, play 1B and maybe even the OF in a pinch would allow the team to carry an extra reliever and be short-handed on the bench.
  2. If there's a delay, how tough would it be to contact Stearns, Boone's agent or Boone himself to find out what the hold-up is? That is what these guys are getting paid for.
  3. Why in the world would the Indians trade for Aguilar, a guy they dumped less than a year ago?
  4. If we don't bring in Walker, I think it's fair to at minimum give Villar a chance in open competition in ST to win the 2b job. Him/Sogard/Perez(if he's on the roster). And I agree with the poster on Braun, having him play some 1b would be beneficial for many reasons. Heck Aguilar probably has some trade value and might net us a Jason Rogers type return depending how the market shakes out if we moved him. Yep, if nothing happens, it will be an open competition between Villar and Sogard for the job. I'd prefer that Villar wins it if that is the case, as Sogard profiles much better as super sub than Villar would. Briggs, you have to face that, barring a big acquisition, Villar will be given every opportunity to right the ship as the starter at 2B.
  5. Why do they have to move anyone off the 40 man? it has been reported that boone logan has signed a major league contract with the brewers. the 40-man is currently full. And the team's intrepid beat reporters seem to be on hiatus. I mean, shouldn't something have come out by now on what is going on roster-wise? Perhaps the placed a player on waivers, and a deal is being worked out?
  6. It depends on if Stearns believes this team is a contender right now. If he doesn't, I think they roll with Villar and hope that he smooths out his kinks. If he does, though, I assume there is mutual interest in a reunion, but likely not at four years Walker's agent is looking for. I think if Walker would settle for two seasons, the Brewers would be all over that. Walker is exactly the high contact, low strike-out type of hitter that the team needs in the line-up. He slots in perfectly as a #2 hitter.
  7. Cleveland does have more prospects than two of the guys that were rumored to be part of the Lucroy deal. Why Chang and Allen, besides the fact that fans started doing their homework on them 1 1/2 years ago?
  8. It's getting a little crazy how long this process is taking. It was reported that Logan passed his physical on Friday. How long does MLB allow a team to carry over their limit of players before officially dropping someone?
  9. Makes me think that either Bandy or Susac will be jettisoned to open the 40-man spot needed for Logan. Either that or one of the 40-man catchers is involved in a deal soon to be announced. Which one of those two is getting traded for cash? Could be Nottingham too. He would have a lot more value in a package deal for a potential TOR starter. Teams are always on the lookout for young catching.
  10. Makes me think that either Bandy or Susac will be jettisoned to open the 40-man spot needed for Logan. Either that or one of the 40-man catchers is involved in a deal soon to be announced.
  11. I would assume Villar will be given first crack at it if he wins the 2B job. He was quite dynamic in that role in 2016. Otherwise, Sogard would likely be the guy if he wins the 2B job. If not those two, I imagine either Phillips or Brinson will be the guy, assuming that Broxton is dealt. While not ideal, Arcia also has the speed and on-base ability to be a top-of-the-order table setter. Of course, that ability hasn't been totally realized yet. I think any of those is a better option than Thames or Santana in the lead-off spot. Those guys are run producers, and need to be stationed lower in the line-up.
  12. If the players can't do better from another team, is it really a low ball offer? Good point. I'll further add, is it really a low ball offer when free agents are asking for almost double what previous comparable contracts dictate they deserve? Ha! Perhaps "low-ball" should be changed to "market-appropriate"?
  13. I'm starting to get the feeling that the Brewers have multiple low-ball offers sitting out there, and are waiting to hear back from players and/or their representatives. That is likely what happened with Chacin and Gallardo, and probably what is currently happening with Boone Logan. It just happens that the Logan info leaked somehow, while the other offers are being kept close to the vest. That is a stark difference from the way the Cardinals and Cubs seem to do business. Both teams have been linked to nearly every free agent or big-name potential trade acquisition out there. I have no doubt that info is being leaked deliberately in order to keep those fan bases interested and engaged. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.
  14. Not for the Brewers' beat writers apparently ...
  15. It would take more than Domingo Santana to get any of Francisco Mejia/ Carson Kelly/ Chance Sisco/ Jorge Alfaro. Not one of those 4 plus pitching to get DSantana... Now I could see DSantana & Mejia being part of multi player packages for each side in a trade but neither side believes its a fair deal 1 for 1 or 2 for 1/ 1 for 2. You are way undervaluing Santana and way overvaluing these prospects if you think that. Mejia is a high value prospect, but he's still just that, a prospect. Santana is a young middle of the order power bat. It would take Mejia+ to get him without a doubt. I mean, when was the last time you saw a large major league piece plus more traded for one prospect. That just doesn't happen.
  16. Are you really surprised that a prime-age, currently performing, relatively cheap, good pitcher with dominant stuff, that has 4 years of control exposed in the offseason to the entire MLB has generated an extremely high price tag? Chris Archer has 2 ASG appearances and a 3.6 ERA/3.46 over the past five years. Chris Sale, was coming off 5 straight ASG and a 3.04 ERA/3.06 FIP over the past five years when he was dealt for Moncada, Kopech, Diaz and Basabe. A package of Brinson, Burnes and Hiura + appears to be better than what the Red Sox received for Sale...so yes I am surprised that the lesser pitcher could command more in a trade. Moncada was perhaps the top prospect in all of baseball when he was dealt, and Kopech was perhaps the best power pitching prospect in all of baseball. Basabe was also a top 10 prospect for the Sox. There is no way Brinson, Burnes and Hiura compare to those three, even with the best Brewer-colored glasses on.
  17. This is a good point. Stearns' style to date would be to target controllable, pre-breakout players via trade. Signing a FA like Arietta, Darvish, Cobb, Lynn all fly in the face of what Stearns MO has been to date (granted the Brewers were in "rebuild" mode and not looking for FA). In regard to Archer, I would say that also isn't Stearns MO. Looking at a few trades in particular, Shaw, Villar and Anderson, I think Stearns is looking for SP in a similar vein. Archer has already "broken out" which doesn't make me think he is Stearns target at this point. All of this leads me to believe a trade target would be more a Sean Manaea-type if he is searching for SP via trade. Chacin seems to fit the Anderson profile, late 20s who could still bloom. Who else is a Sean Manaea type player that the Brewers could be targeting via trade? A few names come to mind that may be "buy low" types with breakout potential: 1. Dylan Bundy 2. Matt Harvey 3. Jake Odorizzi
  18. Chacin isn't going to put your beloved Suter in danger of not making the team. And if Suter proves to be one of the team's five best starting candidates, he'll be in the rotation. Chacin is what he is, a proven, durable mid-rotation starter, which is much more than what can be said for Suter, Woodruff, Ventura or Derby. I mean, I like all those guys too, and it is likely that two of the four (Suter and Woodruff) are going to play major roles from day 1 of the season. I think Derby is a darkhorse candidate for the bullpen. He's got a lot of Tyler Thornburg in him. I'm not as high on Ventura, but he's not a bad guy to have around as a depth piece. Also, I agree that the team signing Chacin has nothing to do with their ability or need to sign Walker. I imagine Walker is looking for a 4-year deal, and the Brewers don't want to commit to that many years on a player who isn't exactly young anymore. I liked Walker as well, but Villar or Dubon does offer much, much more upside at that position.
  19. That's a ton. Might be a bit too much from Brewer perspective. Substitute Nottingham for Dubon and include Villar and Guerra. It's not like Villar and Guerra are high-priced vets that bring negative value. Why would you say it's too much to give up, then attach more? Plus you are trading an above-average catcher and 5 of the team's top 10 prospects, including 4 Top 100 guys. I know the team has a deep system, but that one trade would decimate it. I like Yelich too, but not at that price. I don't think Realmuto is that much of an upgrade from Pina either.
  20. Drake serves a purpose I guess as a reverse split guy who is tough on righties. The only thing I can figure is they are hoping to throw one of Susac or Bandy in as an extra nugget in a bigger trade. I suppose there are catcher-needy teams out there that could use one of them. Too bad it appears that Tampa doesn't need catching. Maybe they could flip one to Florida if Realmuto gets moved?
  21. Hopefully he makes it through waivers. I like his upside. How he gets cut and guys like Drake and Susac survive is beyond me.
  22. No, it was said many times that he was a leader in the clubhouse especially with the young guys last year and was one of the biggest pranksters/practical jokers in all of MLB. He did a lot to keep a loose clubhouse. Whenever they interviewed guys on TV in the dugout and you saw sunflower seeds, Double Bubble, etc., being tossed on them, it was Garza. Also Garza had a very good 2014 season, and it could be argued that he was league average his other three years. Yes we all remember his blow-up games, and the unfortunate bullpen refusal, but he was ok. Certainly not up to what his contract was, but not useless either.
  23. We don't know either. There is still one starting position completely up in the air. Nothing they have done so far is preventing Hader from starting the season in the rotation, or adding Nelson whether that be in May or August. They have signed two starters and zero relievers. Hader isn't starting and that's that. Even if you believe Gallardo was signed as a reliever, he sure wasn't signed to be a high leverage late inning reliever which is what Hader is and that doesn't even factor in the huge loss of Swarzak to the late inning mix. Heck we haven't even replaced Hughes. It's still two months before P&C report but it's very clear that Hader is being positioned as a key member of the bullpen, and rightly so. This is not a slight to him or some sort of demotion. It's how teams are built in 2018 where high leverage innings > volume of innings. You are making your final determination on Hader's future in one line, while in the next noting that there's still two months before pitchers and catchers report. That's a little contradictory. While I'd like to see Hader be given a shot in the rotation, I'm just happy that we have him and that he'll be slated for important innings next year. There are still plenty of solid back-end bullpen arms available as well. I expect the team to jump on at least one, if not two of them.
  24. Prospect for prospect deals happen basically around never.
  25. I like it. Next to no risk financially. If he rebounds and the team is playing below expectations, he'll be a great trade chip in July.
