  1. Slowing the Grisham hype train would probably be healthy for a few people around these parts, but CC’s got a big old shovel full of coal for the fire box: We’re trying to get a player that’s playing really well and inject him into our big-league roster. He’s playing his butt off right now. What he’s been doing at Triple-A since he got there is out-of-this-world-type stuff. It’s like the stuff Yelich was doing last year, basically. Maybe even a little better. So we’ve taken note of it. The better than Yelich part sounds awesome, but I don’t like the sound of Grisham losing his butt. The glutes are a pretty important muscle group, and so a search party should be dispatched immediately to return Grisham’s butt. He’s going to need that.
  2. This is literally not a fact, and putting it in all caps won’t make it a fact, either. There’s a wide gulf between Saladino and Griffey. Everyone’s assessment of Grisham seems to fall somewhere in between those extremes, and rightly so, since they are, you know, sane. That still allows for a huge range of outcomes, which we can all hold in good faith and discuss with civility. They’re attempting to field the best 25-man team they have, which is all you can ask for post-deadline. That’s all you can ask for.
  3. This is sort of like when you were a kid, and Christmas was looking like a dud, and then your parents pull out the surprise present! Then you unbox it and it’s a bike, but it needs assembly first. And it’s wintertime, so it might not be really fun to ride it for a while. That’s how I feel about promoting Grisham. Is it fun? Yeah! Is it going to be everything it could be right away? Probably not. But still, pretty awesome. Let’s not blow a tire, though.
  4. If you want what the Astros have, then be ready to lose 100+ for three seasons or more. That’s the price. Me though, I’ve seen enough bad baseball in Milwaukee to last a while. I don’t mind the window staying open for a while longer, even if it’s only half open.
  5. The organizational ethos is depth and versatility. Injury and ineffectiveness have obliterated those qualities this year, and these trades can help get back to neutral on those fronts. I’d say a team that has performed as middlingly as the Brewers deserves nothing more or less than that. It’s up to the guys on the roster to do their jobs, and they’ll be competitive.
  6. Must mean the Mets were playing chicken with everybody on Wheeler. Nobody blinked. Good for the Astros.
  7. Dude is a butcher. He could add a win, though, if he is deployed correctly. Might make a difference, or it might not.
  8. I think I can give the FO some more slack on this one. They have proven that they know what they have in the minors well enough to deal guys they aren’t going to miss. I can’t think of a Stearns trade involving prospects that shipped out a guy I really wish was still in Milwaukee. I think some may be reading a bit too much into Dubon’s ranking (which is wildly subjective, and diluted by a weak overall system in the minors right now) and AAA numbers (that are clearly inflated across the board). I don’t think he had nearly as much value in the eyes of other GM’s as he does around here, and we likely would have been disappointed by the return just about any team gave us—but that’s just speculation on my part. In the end, Dubon was a cool story, but not a cornerstone, and maybe not even an average regular player. To those who fear he was our last hope of replacing Arcia for years, I say no, there is another...
  9. In the time it took you to write that, Ray walked two batters in a bullpen session. He isn’t a savior, and neither is Bumgarner or Wheeler, and all would be hugely expensive, meaning we’d waste practically all or most of our limited trade pieces on a guy that won’t be what most fans will expect—which is “the guy” that can anchor a staff. And Syndergaard is off the table. Face it, there is no Superman coming this year, no 2008 Sabbathia ready to lay waste to the division down the stretch. It isn’t happening. But once you accept that, there is peace on the other side. You can rest assured knowing the Brewers haven’t staked it all on this year, and pitchers will be healthier going into 2020, with another year of growth for Burnes and Peralta, and who knows, there’s always a chance we can land Cole this winter. That’s not so bad, is it? I just worry we’re going to lose you to a heart attack in the next two hours...
  10. The Rays are in a 40-man roster crunch after the season, and are flush with pitching. That's why these two teams matching up on a deal made a ton of sense. Good context, thanks!
  11. The thing that worries me a bit is that Tampa seems like a savvy club, and they have a pitcher’s park down there. If they ditched a player with years of control left and a supposedly live arm, that’s a head-scratcher for me. I know you have to give something to get something, and maybe they really like Aguilar, especially in a year where it looks like there will not be many impact bats moving at the wire. I just hope we can help this guy find something Tampa couldn’t.
  12. Faria is controllable, and looks like he has some upside. Interesting bullpen piece, although he did start 14 games for the Rays in 2017 and was very effective. Not so successful in 2018, which I assume prompted the bullpen shift (plus, Tampa gets more creative with their pitching staff than most clubs). I’m intrigued.
  13. Hader and Peralta can’t be trusted. Time for a hard sell and regroup. *half blue*
  14. 0-2 going into the deadline, two games back of 1st. Could be better...
  15. Uh oh, the dreaded non-save situation for a high-leverage reliever.
  16. Say what you want about the deception of Freddy’s fastball, but if it’s still dependent on hitters chasing out of the zone, patient hitters will kill him.
  17. Plus, Bauer has a widely publicized beef with several Astros players, including old UCLA teammate and rival Gerrit Cole. If it does happen, that’s must see tv—get your popcorn!
  18. He took a big step this year, but he has extreme fly-ball tendencies. Thus, he relies on pitching in a cavernous park—Miller would not play to his strengths at all.
  19. From Bob Nightengale on Twitter: The #Brewers' biggest regret over the winter has to be their decision not to re-sign Wade Miley, who has been fabulous for the #Astros, and earning just $4.5 million. He badly wanted to return to Milwaukee. They grabbed Jordan Lyles today but still out for more pitching. Granted, hindsight is 20/20, and Miley was working some smoke and mirrors last year, but still...dangit. Reading that hurts a bit.
  20. I’d say Stearns hasn’t shown the willingness—as opposed to ability—to get involved in a bidding war. He looks for his players at his price, I expect. That being said, one could argue the need for pitching on this team is more of a genuine need than it has been in years past, with the Brewers literally running out of healthy bodies to throw out there. Maybe these injuries will change his approach.
