  1. Numbers are so easily manipulated. People keep saying play Branyan because of his OPS. Maybe his OPS is high because of the judicious way in which he is used? What would happen if he faced more lefties? To me, Branyan is best suited to be a bat off the bench. I don't have any numbers to back this up but it seems like the more he plays the less productive he is, as if he becomes more undisciplined the more frequently he bats.
  2. I also would like to see Prince start. I can understand that Ned feels he should start Lyle more often than Prince. How can Bill Hall still be playing ahead of JJ. He is inferior defensively, and lately he is inferior offensively.
  3. I don't think we you blame Ned for not taking a strike in the 9th. You don't give the take sign in case it is a fastball right down the pipe. The hitter needs to be more disciplined. I seem to remember posting early in the summer about he danger of using the same relievers every game. Well, upon review, Santana hurt his arm and Bottalico ran out of luck. That left Wise who also got hurt. So then we hit August and had nobody we could count on left to set up. We should have spread around some of those 6th, 7th and 8th innings.
  4. Why is Helling starting? It is because managers like veteran arms down the stretch when they feel they have something to play for. They hope to get that one or two last good games left in their arm. We are not the only team to think that way. Most teams will get burned by doing this.
  5. I wonder how many people posting here saw Andre Dawson play for the Expos. He was one the best players in baseball (maybe the best in the early 1980s). Before he hurt his knees playing on the parking lot they called Olympic Stadium he was possibly the best defensive centerfielder in baseball. He had one of the greatest throwing arms I have seen from a CF, but he seldom got to throw baserunners out because people just wouldn't think of trying to advance on him. His power numbers look better when put in the context of the time he spent in Montreal, 30 home runs in a season were a lot during that time and especially in that park. He really overshadowed Gary Carter, a HOF catcher, in Montreal. The Hawk definitely belongs in the HOF. Also, I would rate him ahead of Dale Murphy. Dawson was better at his prime and his prime lasted longer. This may be sacriligious, but I think he was a more productive centerfielder than Robin Yount.
  6. I want to add on to the Prince not starting post. It would be one thing if we were starting the same nine every day, or if Prince were a defensive replacement type. He was red hot when the Brewers brought him up. He may have stayed hot had we used him once in awhile. In that time Lyle's average has dropped a few points. Also, it seems like we have gone out of our way to start Magruder and get him at bats. Pittsburgh has been a harbinger of disaster for us in 1998, 2001, and 2004. I have had a bad feeling about this series since the start of the homestand. I usually don't do Chicken Little posts like this. I apologize to those who are offended.
  7. I think it is interesting how they showed the mark left by Richie Sexson on that blue flag pole, yet when they ran the replay the flag pole was green. Did Richie hit the pole so hard that a paint job couldn't cover it up? Or, more likely, they are just talking for the sake of talking.
  8. I am tired about hearing how Victor is the victim of unearned runs. The reason why he gives up a lot of unearned is that he doesn't get hitter out after errors are committed, while the rest of our pitchers can.
  9. Tennessee is an Arizona farm team. Casey Daigle, who closed out Saturday's game, is Mr. Jennie Finch. He must have good Karma.
  10. The Brewers maybe playing in a near media vacuum today with the Packers playing tonight. Anybody know which Central Wisconsin radio stations are carrying the game tonight?
  11. I don't think Magrader hit a fair ball off of Clemens. His left-handed swing looks so bad, especially on high fastballs.
  12. Here are some random thoughts. I haven't read the whole thread so I apologize if I repeated some things. This reminded me of a high school game in that our pitcher throwing the shutout was also our best hitter. Coors Field has become an easier place to pitch now that you don't have to face the likes of Bichette, Castilla, and Walker. Maybe it was just me, but it seemed that we were determined NOT to walk. We still swing at too many pitches early in the count, or with the count in our advantage, that we can't do anything with.
  13. I think that 4 bases are too many for us. If we could score by reaching 3rd base we would be a lot better off.
  14. Hall's baserunning not only cost us his run, but Lyle's as well. Lyle would have advanced to third on the ground out if Hall had gone home and scored on the wild pitch. Don't blame either of those situations on the base coach. When the plays are in front of you like that you don't wait for the coach to tell you to go.
  15. This is a good decision to pinch hit. Victor has little command of his pitches tonight. But Magruder? Is it me, or has his left-handed swing deteriorated since the start of the season.
  16. The Brewers just won two series' from teams ahead of them in the standings while on the road. It was a great week. We just have to keep winning series' and we will reel in the competition.
  17. I think team streak's song was "The Beat Goes On". It is nice to be in a season where we still have chance. We have to keep winning series after series, and it would help to put some week long winning streaks in there as well. It won't be easy.
  18. We are back into the rut of swinging at the pitcher's pitches. How many times did swing at sliders early in the count tonight. Some comments are rather harsh again tonight. I think sometimes we overrate out talent. We have a solid, but not spectacular team. I am sure that many guys are taking this loss hard. I don't think it is fair to say that we have a team full of losers. We still have some improvements to make. Until we make them, guys will have to fill roles that maybe they don't have the ability to fill consistently. In the off-season we have to find another middle of the order hitter and we need to find a way to become faster. We are close. I think that, barring an unusual rash of injuries, that next year we will be in the playoffs. Back in April, most of the people on this board would have been pleased with that because that would be a year ahead of schedule.
  19. 6 innings is a quality start? Since when? I thought to get a quality start you had to go 7.
  20. I am sure that this post will be more odd than my usual, that was an emotionally wrenching win. Whenever the Brewers play the Cardinals I realize that I am still not over the 1982 World Series. I will go to my grave saying that Pete Ladd got squeezed in game two and that the Brewers really won that game. Plus, what if Fingers could pitch and what if Vuke wasn't pitching hurt. The bullpen was outstanding tonight. Our young guys really came through. And they had to do it by getting extra outs. We got some big hits tonight. Sometimes this team reminds of the 1991 Packers, their last losing season. That team made some good plays, but two or three bad ones were too much to overcome. This Brewer team shows flashes but has a hard time doing things right on a consistant enough basis. Things are turning around here.
  21. I think we got some young guys in Nashville who could do what Bottalico is doing. Unfortunately, Ricky may be pitching himself out of trade interest. It seems obvious to be like the Nationals have a lot better athletes than us. I have mentioned this before, but I think we need to get faster before we can start thinking about winning 90 games and making the playoffs. I am not ripping on anybody, it just seems like the Nats can take the extra base and can run the fly ball a lot better than us. Our people in the minors may solve that, I don't know. I just think that we have to get more athletic.
  22. I too was wondering about JDLR. These last couple of weeks have moved me out of Ned's corner. I just want to stay on plan and develop young players. Let's face it, Phelps isn't part of the future. I have heard and read DM and Gord talk about playing the young players, but it seems like they are the lowest on the totem pole. That is why I wonder if Ned and DM are on the same page. When JDLR is on, he is a lot better than Phelps is.
  23. EL CABALLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With Prince sitting again today, does anyone else think that Ned and DM aren't on the same page in regards on how to use the roster?
