  1. I From what the radio said yesterday; If nobody claims Perez he could accept an assignment to San Antonio and the Brewers would pay his entire salary. If he rejects the assignment and thereby becomes a free agent, the Brewers owe him nothing. I don't know, that doesn't sound right. It seems to me there is always a veteran every year that takes their time to pick the team they want to go to after being DFAd. And those teams are just paying the prorated minimum wage for the rest of the year. If a team claims Perez off waivers they have to pay his entire remaining amount. If Perez is not claimed and the Brewers let him go, any team signing him would pay only the mlb minimum and the Brewers pay the remaining balance.
  2. Saladino = Nate Orf. You be the judge. I think if the Giants had asked for Arcia, the Brewers would have brought up Dubon to play SS if they had any thought of making that trade. Saladino came up because of his versatility and to be the 5th OF if needed. He hadn't played much SS in San Antonio prior to being called up.

  4. Tues. will be the 7th day. I believe they are trying to work out a trade because somebody claimed him. No evidence, but I think somebody would want him. If not HP goes to San Antonio to keep his pay. The DFA occurred last Thursday evening, so wouldn’t the 7th day be Wednesday? Yup you're right.
  5. No risk signing. Good move. Smyly has awful, but a minor lg. contract hurts nothing.
  6. I gain more good prospects than I give up, because I sell super high on Hader. Kennedy is good but expensive, that’s why the $ coming back, I still have Jeffress Guerra Knebel and others next year. Duran is still highly rated, and so are the other 3. I can also trade 1 or 2 of those prospects for a quality big league ready player if I want. I guess I’m in the minority thinking Bauer is a stud pitcher, but I do, and between he and Woody and Houser, I’ll take my chances in the playoffs. I'm not as high on Jeffress, Guerra, and Knebel as you are. Jeffress is nothing near what he was last year. ERA and FIP are way up. Hits are up, HRs are up, Ks are way down. Guerra has allowed 12 runs in his last 14 IPs and going backward. Knebel coming off arm problems is iffy at best. I'm still far from convinced on Houser as a starter. He's done nothing so far to say he's going to do the job. Tonight he went only 5 and allowed 3 ERs and two bombs. His FB and CB play out well as a long man where he thrived, but highly questionable starting.

  8. Crew 92-- You are getting 3 guys still in A ball (Duran is in his 5th year and still in A ball). They are a long ways away from helping the Brewers. You give up Hader for a rental in Smith and have nothing other than Kennedy who is trying to reinvent himself as a reliever and nowhere near a Hader, for next year. Then you let Moose and Grandal go and maybe get replacements who aren't as good, but could fill a void IF MA ups the payroll to a ridiculous $180M next year. You give up the farm system and weaken the team for years. No thanks.
  9. I'm not so sure about Elias. 3.91 FIP - 4 BBs per 9 - more HRs and runs given up than he did all of last year. I'd love Giles, but he would be costly $6.3M this year and arby eligible, to keep for 2020. What would the Jays take to let him go? Smith or Doolittle too. Kennedy is trying to re-invent himself as a reliever and who knows? I don't think the Brewers have any package near what the Tigers would want for Greene and Boyd, but one can dream.
  10. I don't see Stearns being interested in Cashner unless he came extremely cheap. Terrible in '15, '16, rebounded in 2017 and then really bad again last year. He's too inconsistent to give up anything significant for. I doubt the Reds trade within the division, especially since they are close to contending. Gray would be nice. He's not the #1 or #2 they need, but he'd help for sure. Depends on the asking price. Homer Bailey has been awful for a long time. This year he is just bad. 4.87 ERA - 3.8 BBs per 9 - a hit per IP. He'd be a very cheap rental because the Dodgers are paying almost his entire contract, but is he any better than what they already have? I wouldn't want Leake for anything even if they included Elias. Leake far more hits than IPs. 5.13 FIP, 4.63 ERA, 23 dingers allowed already. Roark would be another rental and would help. I guess it depends on what the price was.
  11. Hart: 6.2 IPs - 4 hits -5 BBs.... Petricka: 8 IPs - 6 Hits - 7 BBs. Both had better ERAs than Burnes, but that's not saying a whole lot.
  12. Sano hasn't been nearly as bad as Shaw. In fact, in some respects he's been quite good. He's slugging .556. Shaw's slugging .290. The strikeouts for Sano are alarmingly high, but he's slugging .628 against LHP. If you could get him straight up for Shaw, you do that in a heartbeat. I'm not so sure Stearns would take Sano for Shaw. Sano is striking out 41% of the time against LH pitching and has been even worse against RH. Defense is also a problem. Shaw has done better in the past and this year both are horrible. No deal.
  13. I think you are way over-estimating Erceg's and Aguilar's current value. Erceg hit .248/.306 at AA last year. Currently at AAA he is hitting .205/.313..Not the kind of prospect who headlines a deal. Aguilar right now is a negative in almost all catagories. Nottingham is nowhere near a center piece of this deal. I doubt the Tigers would give up Greene for the 3 much less Greene and a top 100 prospect.
  14. Tampa Bay was a very good team in a great league last year. A league in which 97 wins was only good for the 2nd WC spot and 90 wins left them 18 back in the division. They traded their best pitcher(Archer) and got a massive haul in return. I have been against doing the same with Hader, but I think it's something we should start to consider. I don't want to give up Turang, Hiura, Burnes. I'd trade Grisham, but that's is out of ignorance as I know little about him beyond what you can read on the back of his card and on scouting reports. My ideal way forward would be to try and move Moose, Grandal, Anderson, Thames, save some money this year, try to acquire a couple big league ready(or close to) players for the next 2-3 years(the Yelich window) and then go out and spend money next year in a loaded FA market to get a guy like Cole, and then spend to get Will Smith. I'd guess that'd be 6/160 and 2/12. I'm not a "Brewers can spend 180 because they only spent 70 this year" type guy, but they have money coming off the books with Braun and the players I mentioned and they can afford to spend on a pitcher when they have so many young, talented pitchers. Cole and Woodruff give you a 1-2 punch and I believe you throw Burnes in there and you WILL have a great 1-3 with a plethora of 4/5 options and you have a lot of BP options. Hader is great, but we get back Knebel, Wahl and we have a lot of arms coming up this year and in a years time, who knows how many more may be here? Rasmussen? Even Snell could be a left handed weapon late in the year for us(that's very optimistic, but my point is we have a ton of arms and should be able to find 7-10 good arms in the org and if you sign someone like Smith to pair with Knebel, Jeffress, Wahl, that's potentially a very good BP). I am sure many will disagree and if the price gets too outrageous, I wouldn't give up any flexibility for the next few years to sign him. But if not him, I wouldn't touch Strausburg with a 10 foot pole given what he'll likely command(though his stuff, even with his velocity now in "just" the mid 90's is ridiculous). And while there are several other good vets, they don't fit the mold that we need. That's the most likely path to a true contender in MY opinion. I'm sure many will disagree. Who plays 3B is Moose is gone? Who catches if Grandal is traded? Neither one will bring a near ready MLB prospect to replace them next year. Stearns would have to spend a ton of money to replace them so why not try and re-sign them and build from there. With Shaw is such a funk with the stick, who knows if he's going to recover. Right now you'd be lucky to get a med. level A ball prospect for Anderson. A lot of stock is being placed on Wahl on these blogs. Wahl has done nothing to warrent such high expectations. He throws very hard, but now he will be coming off arm problems. I wouldn't count on him for anything and if he does do well it's an added bonus. Jeffress is just a shadow of his old self. He has lost 3-4 mph on his fastball and his other pitches aren't nearly as effective. He's already allowed more runs than he did all of last year. His BBs per 9 are up. His hits per 9 are up and his Ks per 9 are down significantly. Knebel will be coming off arm surgery as well and nobody knows how that will end up. If Hader is gone the bull pen is a gigantic mess.
  15. I think the same way about Wilkerson; start him or outright him back to San Antonio. He is a Davies type pitcher who needs everything perfect to be effective. His high 80s-low, low 90s FB won't get many outs unless it's perfectly located. Slow curve and a low 80s change also are BP type pitches unless precisely located. One thing for sure, he stinks out of the pen. With the way CC's starters have been going, what can it hurt to give him a start? He can't do much worse than Peralta, Burnes, Chacin, Nelson, Houser, etc...
  16. It's not just FB command. Burnes can't throw his "stuff" for strikes when he needs it. He gets behind in the count and has to come in with a FB that catches too much of the plate and the Brewer OFs watch another ball sail out of the park. He has shown the same thing as a reliever. He needs to stay in AAA and get his mechanics corrected to where he was last year.
  17. If it had beed Yelich this year would you be calling for automatic pinch runners?
  18. You want to give up on the entire season for 4 guys who aren't even out of A ball? Losing Hader leaves CC with zero closing options and losing Grandal severly limits an already shakey offense. Honeywell isn't even going to start pitching again until sometime next year! I doubt the Rays clean out the farm for a reliever and a rental anyways.
  19. That rotation that's a mess could look very different in just a year though. I don't think it's hard to envision Corbin Burnes following Woodruff to be a #2 type starter and we've got depth. Either way, I don't think this team need to sell Yelich and Hader and hope that we can turn around and become a winner again in short order. I think it's very hard to envision Burnes being anything but a pen arm. He has done absolutely nothing as a starter to indicate he will be a #5 much less a #2. They have mound depth but nobody even close to helping. Anybody even close to a starter has been tried and been an abysmal failure so far with the exception of Woodruff and Davies. Davies has been horrible his last three starts, Gio got rocked in two of his five starts and is a 4-5 inning guy. Chacin, Anderson, Nelson, Burnes, Peralta, and Houser (tonight) have been terrible. Brown has been awful in AAA.
  20. I think the whole thing comes down to: does Stearns want to get rid of Aguilar? If he lets Aguilar go there will be 4-5 teams that put in claims immediately. Aguilar's trade value is just about nil, so he isn't going to bring much more than a bag of used balls.
  21. Ok, Guerra’s a better pitcher this year, because of the curve, is what I should have said. Woodruff has added velo, imo, thru better mechanics. He has room to improve and will. Guerra is about the same as he was last year once he was demoted to the pen. His big numbers came mostly as a starter. He controls the curve better, but he has lost feel for the splitter. One replaces the other.
  22. If CC keeps getting horrendous starts from his pitchers, he'll need an 8 man pen for the foreseeable future. The pen is being taxed to the limit with 8 guys with all the short starts. Nothing I've seen indicates things are going to get significantly better any time soon. Remember, once sent down, a pitcher has to wait at least 10 days before recall. Claudio, Hader, Jeffress, Albers, Guerra, Nelson are not going to be sent down. If CC went with a 7 man pen only one arm would be yo-yoing. With the pen needing to cover 4-6 innings nearly every day, CC would run out of options quickly. If Hiura comes back up, a position player (Shaw or Aguilar) will have to be removed.
  23. Santana WAS a 4th OF for the Brewers. So they traded a 4th OF and got back a 4th OF and a pitcher. Plus now the 4th OF is a decent defender who can play all 3 OF positions.
  24. I think Stearns looked at how much playing time Santana would get with Braun also being RH. They obviously don't want Braun at 1B, and so Santana would be sitting a lot. Plus he Ks a bunch and he is one of the worst defensive OFs in baseball.
  25. Perez's career numbers are better than Saladino's, plus he is a better OF. Numbers are almost equal, but Saladino wouldn't be any kind of upgrade over Perez.
