  1. Is this in blue? Feels like Burnes has been awful this year, both as a reliever AND a starter... We are talking about 11 outings here....that is a pretty darn small sample. Overall the stats may not look good, but those 7 outings where he didn't give up an earned run were almost all really impressive. It isn't like he is struggling when he puts up zeros...usually he is dominant. I am not really a fan of getting rid of someone who looks dominant that often. I will take a few speed bumps to see if he can iron out the few kinks he has run into. 7/11 dominant performances means he is having good outings 64% of the time. For comparison Claudio is at something like 40% and Albers is floating around 53% as far as good outing frequency (calculated by using their last 10-12 outings). Yah, Burnes blowing up when he struggles isn't exactly good, but I think it would be unwise to demote someone finding success as often as he is. Woodruff was the same way to start the year, but in the rotation. His stats overall looked pretty bad, but most of the time he was really dominating...just had too many hiccups. Patience. Burnes has been awful as a reliever. 15 IPs - 16 hits - 15 ERs - 9 BBs - 1.67 WHIP. Obviously much worse as a starter. Either way he has been terrible and needs to go down to work things out.
  2. Agree with not sending Burnes down. I believe the crew will be rewarded with their patience. Imo, no way the crew goes with 7 pen arms, not with the consistent short starts from Anderson Chacín and CCs M/O with the pen. Hiura’s gone on Monday, and won’t be back, barring injury, until Aguilar and or Thames are traded, which I hope is well before the deadline. Burnes has been hit hard too many times to stay in the big leagues. CC can't risk losing games by continually throwing Burnes out there. The majors is not where a young guy should work out his problems. With the Brewer starters not going even 6 innings, CC needs reliable long men. Burnes isn't it right now.
  3. Are you saying an average AAA player is a #90 type player? Ray hit some HRs, but his BA/OBP and 179 whiffs say he's not close to a top 100 type player. Look at his A+ numbers. Again very low BA/OBP and extremely high whiff rate. Before he got hurt his AAA numbers were horrible. The Giants would take about a 1/2 second to turn down a Ray for Madbum deal.
  4. The problem with your scenario is that next year they would add $16M, plus they need to pick up the $11M for Moustakas, and if the re-sign Smoak that's another $9-11M added on. They also have Knebel, Shaw, Davies, Perez, Guerra, Gamel, Arcia, and Suter arby eligible. With the payroll already at a Brewer record, money becomes a major factor. No Grandal > 18 mil No moose > 9 mil That’s = 27 mil New Fox deal > 9 mil That’s = 36 mil - 16 mil = +20 mil to keep payroll where it’s at now. Then in the last year of Kimbrel’s contract: New turner & Espn deal > 10 mil(EST.) New local tv deal > 8 mil(EST.) No Braun contract > 14 mil( less 2 mil buyout) That’s 32 mil. - 16 mil. kimbrel = +16 mil. To keep payroll the same. That doesn’t include extra revenue from attendance, corporate sponsors, licensing, playoff revenue.[/quote You're assuming they aren't going to keep their #4 hitter (Moose) who is doing very well. I think Stearns jumps to keep him at the chance and look to trade Shaw or put him at 1B. They also will need a replacement for Grandal. They didn't like Pena as a starter this year so nothing will change and Nottingham isn't the answer. Plus you forget the 9 arby eligible guys.
  5. How about surplus value in the following years? The Brewers have to look at the future too. They don't have the cash nor the farm system to lose high end prospects for a 3 month rental.
  6. The problem with your scenario is that next year they would add $16M, plus they need to pick up the $11M for Moustakas, and if the re-sign Smoak that's another $9-11M added on. 7. The way Ray has been playing for the last three years, he wouldn't bring anything. He has been awful from A+ through this year at AAA and he's currently hurt.
  8. That's kind of the point though. Nobody is going to trade for Corey Ray, he's hurt all the time, and hasn't exactly lit the world on fire with his play when he is healthy. With respect to Burnes, what other chips do they have that another team would actually covet? With Ray not hitting and injured, Dubon not hitting, and Brown pitching poorly the Brewers have Turang and Lutz as guys teams could build a deal around for top talent assuming Burnes and Hiura aren't being moved. I agree about Turang. I saw him play on the 28th. He looks pretty darn good. He went 2 for 4 with a 3B and a RBI. Smooth fielder. He has a high ceiling. You're right about Ray. He has been awful, but Dubon hasn't been doing badly. .285/.327.. He doesn't K very much and plays good defense. Lutz is struggling at Carolina right now. .228/.307. Not sure how he is viewed by other teams.
  9. Ray has little value as a prospect now. He has been terrible at all three of the high minor lgs.. A+ .238/.307/156 Ks -- AA .239/.323/176 Ks -- AAA .178/.259/49 Ks in only 101 ABs. He maybe a throw-in with other prospects, but certainly not the major part of the trade.
  10. No on the bear, pitching terrible. Colome will be very expensive prospect wise and salary. Just sign Kimbrel. Costs only $. and we’d get him for 2 1/2 years. Colome is a rental. Free agent after this year, on a $7.325 million deal. Cost will likely not be astronomical because of this. He is pitching very well. Very similar situation to Soria last year, and acquiring him certainly didn't break the bank. Regarding Kimbrel, I think that dead horse is beaten to a pulp by now, isn't it? Colome is arby eligible in 2020 and a FA in 2021. He'd cost a lot more than Soria because he's better than Soria and still controllable (if the team wants to pay him) for another year.
  11. No on the bear, pitching terrible. Colome will be very expensive prospect wise and salary. Just sign Kimbrel. Costs only $. and we’d get him for 2 1/2 years. $$ is the problem in signing Kimbrel. He reportedly hasn't backed off his demand of $15.5 per yr on minimum 3 yr. deal.
  12. The White Sox have turned down much more than Hill and Coca already. Abreu is worth much more to an AL club.
  13. Where you were selected means next to nothing when you start lacing them up. In evaluating a prospect, do you grade draft position or what you see on the field? Is Rasmussen, a guy with almost identical stuff to Burnes and maybe just a tick less, a better prospect than Burnes simply b/c of where he "could" have been drafted if not for injury? That premise seems to fly in the face of the concept of development. There have been many, many top ten picks that have flamed out and never reached their ceiling.....See Corey Ray. Perdomo has actually had three bad outings (8 games) at San Antonio. 1.2 IPs/4 Hits/3 BBs/3 ERs. His next game: 2IPs/1 hit/4 BBs/2 ERs. Three games later: 2/3 of an inning/2 hits/2 ERs. He is struggling with his controll, but still striking out a ton of hitters. If he can get his secondary stuff over for strikes, he could be a major help in the bigs.
  14. I not sure Hiura has been even "serviceable". In his 10 games played he has struck out 2,3, or 4 times in 5 of those games. Right now he is whiffing at a 40% rate (17/42PAs). He's come up with 17 runners in scoring position and driven in one. His other RBI came on a solo HR. 4 times he has whiffed with a runner on 3rd. Very poor no matter how you look at it. Granted it's a small sample size, but he's not hitting like expected. The good side is that he's doing so much better than Shaw.
  15. David Stearns has said repeatedly, he wants to wait until around Memorial Day to see how players/team does before he makes judgements on what to do moving forward. We’re there now. And unless moves are made( money spent )this team probably won’t make the wild card game. Imo the teams weaknesses: - Shaw’s hitting slump is so deep, he probably can’t recover from it this year, he needs to see a sports psychologist. - Aguilar needs to go, he’s almost as bad as Shaw, without the pedigree. - statistically the worst team in baseball at getting a runner in from 3rd with less than 2 out. Also, and just as important, manufacturing runs non- existent. I believe this teams pitching is good enough to win the division, but the aforementioned hitting issues will keep this team from beating out the cubbies. Right now there’s a pretty big gap between them. Imo Stearn’s has work to do, and zero prospect capital in which to fix the hitting issues. So that leaves taking on large contracts as the only way to solve our weaknesses. Now we can pretend Shaw will magically find his stroke, and Aguilar will suddenly lose 60 lbs so as not to clog the bases, since his power stroke is gone. Not sure that’s going to happen. Encarnacion is needed. Once again if done before July: Encarnacion + 5 mil. > Aguilar + Diplan Diplan has little value right now to Seattle. He was bad last year at AA: 57 IPs - 58 Hits - 29 ERs - 1.65 WHIP. This year again at AA he's even worse: 32 IPs - 32 hits - 26 runs - 6.61 ERA - 1.56 WHIP. They don't want a struggling pitcher at AA plus a really struggling 1B. If they are also going to send $5M with Encarnacion, they could get a much better package from an A.L. contender.
  16. two games in, and shaw has struck out three times in nine appearances at the plate. one hit. one of his strikeouts was yesterday with the bases loaded and one out. Brutal. Hard to believe he suddenly shows enough life by the end of the weekend to want to activate him. Wonder how long they'll let the rehab assignment run, and if it could end with being optioned. The way Shaw is going he should be optioned to get his swing back. He is a whiff machine right now. He's of no use to CC at this time.
  17. Without seeing Rasmussen yet, that’s a tall order. K-Rod has a slider that was the best I had ever seen, and he was throwing straight gas when not many guys did. Tall order yes, but he’s already done what no pitcher in baseball has done this year > low A to high A to AA in a little over a month. 96-99 with a plus slider gives him more than just a chance. Rasmussen was originally scheduled to go to high A because of his age (23). He played only one game for Appleton before moving to Carolina. Let's see what he can do at AA and then AAA before letting him face major lg. hitters. Perdomo was doing great at A+ and AA before he went to San Antonio. At AAA he is still striking out a bunch of guys, but he is also allowing a lot of runs (7 in 10 IPs and walking 10). Rasmussen will probably be in San Antonio this year and let's see what he can do there.
  18. Really? .260/.376/.902 36 runs. 13 HR 34 rbi 29 bb. 36 ks Ops+ > 146 Edwin Encarnacion ^^ 29 walks and 36 ks = professional hitter ^^ 2017-2019 stats: Edwin Encarnacion, .362 wOBA Eric Thames vs. RHP, .366 wOBA Danny Valencia vs. LHP, .353 wOBA (This is actually an unfriendly data sample for Valencia, whose has a career .371 wOBA vs. LHP) Meanwhile, Encarnacion is a DH-only player who shouldn't really be playing in the field. Is Valencia playing for anybody right now? I can't find any stats for 2019.
  19. A handful of pitchers. Notable ones? Brown would come to mind. Ray's been absolutely awful in AAA, so hard to imagine them bringing him up and hoping they get much out of him at the big league level. Taylor too has been bad, although not as bad as Ray. Taylor:.245/.298. Striking out 35% of his ABs. Stokes has been worse. .211/.297 with 20 Ks in 64 PAs. None of them would be a MLB option for the Brewers right now.
  20. The pitching is rounding into shape, same as it did last year, and the offense is still frustrating as heck, same as last year. Give me Encarnacion even if it means losing Aguilar. Which, quite frankly, I don't think would be as big of a loss as many are making it out to be. The biggest problem with Encarnacion is that it will take prospects PLUS between $16-17M dollars for a rental. I just can't see Stearns putting out that kind of cash plus losing prospects for a 1/2 year of Encarnacion.
  21. With Japan's limit on foreign players, they usually prefer proven MLB players. They don't usually have spots for unproven, rookie hitters. This won't become a trend.
  22. After another terrible outing today, I think it's time to send Burnes down and work on getting it right. He has an 11ERA and just loses it mid inning. He's nowhere near what he was last year. Let him go down, not have the pressure of the big leagues, and work on his fastball location and his off speed stuff. I'm not so sure about Anderson out of the pen either. Early results have been awful: 5 games - 10 IPs - 11 hits - 5 ERs - 4 BBs - 3 HRs. We'll see soon.
  23. Encarnacion is making close to $22M this year so Stearns is going to take on $11-12M plus $5M for next year. I don't see Stearns putting out another $16M or more for a rental. Aguilar isn't as bad as many are making him out to be. Way too much money for a rental.
  24. CC has to send someone down to get Nelson on the 25-man roster. If they activate Shaw then another player has to be sent down unless CC wants to go with a 7-man pen. Either way if Shaw is activated Hiura has to go down or somebody has to be sent packing.
  25. The scouting report I saw on Dubon had him at a 34 OFP. A fringe MLB bench player at best. Little value in a trade. I guess it depends on how you see Dubon.
