  1. I just wanted to point out that outside a horrendous 4-game start, Sabathia has been completely ridiculous this year! Since April 17th: 14 GS, 104.3 IP (7.5 IP/G), 9.4 K/G, 1.7 BB/G, 2.16 ERA, 1.01 WHIP That makes me very happy!
  2. The idea of adding a LH bat to the lineup is interesting. The only positions I could see them replacing a full-time player at are 2nd, 3rd or an outfield spot (keeping Hart and Braun and possibly shifting Hart to center if needed). Looking at sOPS+ for team stats by position (via baseball-reference.com), we're actually doing pretty well in the outfield (118, 110 and 112) and the 3rd base platoon is working pretty well (106 on the year and probably better since adding Branyan). So that leaves 2nd base (79)... Is it time to give up on Weeks? Brian Roberts is a switch hitter and could immediately turn 2nd base into a well above average position for this team for the rest of this year and next year (128 OPS+ this year, 139, 96, 112 the previous three seasons). We might kick ourselves during Weeks final two seasons before becoming a free agent, but Roberts is probably a more reliable option for the next year and a half. I'm really on the fence on this one, as Weeks could still get hot like he did at the end of last year. If nothing else, I still would like us to get Maddux on the cheap. As for relievers, I'd be willing to gamble with what we have, but obviously wouldn't be opposed to getting another solid option for the pen. This is exciting!
  3. I'd hate to lose both LaPorta and Gamel, however, 2012 is a long ways out still and I think it's shortsighted to think they are the only possible replacements for Fielder in three and a half years. We're likely to have a bulk of high draft picks again this next year and even if we don't develop a first baseman within our own system, we should have a lot more trading chips available to us in three years as well.
  4. Actually, Roberts is signed through next year at $8mil in 2009, which is more than fine with me if we trade for him.
  5. Atkins would be an interesting pickup. I wonder what it would take to get him. Although his stats are pretty skewed in favor of playing at Coors field.
  6. I'd do it! Let's go for it! Heck, let's flip Gwynn over to SD for Maddux while we're at it. I'm totally serious, I'd be stoked to have Roberts leading off the next year and a half and have a rotation of Sheets, Sabathia, Parra, Maddux and Suppan going into a possible playoff berth for the first time since the year I was born.
  7. I would really love to see us go for it and acquire Sabathia. If we can put a package together that doesn't include either LaPorta or Gamel, it's a no-brainer, but even if we have to deal one of them, we still have the other to take his future position. I know they both could fit into the lineup, especially if Fielder gets traded away, but they fill similar roles for the team and losing one doesn't create a huge hole because the other one is there. Additionally, if we can't sign either Sheets or Sabathia longterm, we're going to be set up with quite a wave of prospects with 12+ picks in the first two rounds of this year and next year's drafts. Not only does that allow for new, young talent in the system, but that much more flexibility to trade for an arm later if we need to.
  8. Well, technically you could include Hart in a trade for Holliday. I love Hart, but you'd have to consider it at least. But I agree, I doubt that's the kind of trade we're looking to make.
  9. I was just perusing CC's statistics and noticed this nugget of bonus that makes me want him in Brewers blue just that much more: Career: 40 ABs, 12 H, 1 2B, 2 HR, 300/317/475 I love pitchers that can swing the bat a little! Anyone seen him atbat? Does he look legit or is it just a small sample size?
  10. How does the Olympics fit in with signing with a team? The Olympic baseball games run between August 13th and August 23rd. Can he sign before August 15th and still qualify to play at the Olympics?
  11. My prediction for a Russell Branyan HR Derby appearance: HR HR Strike HR Ball Ball HR HR Strike Strike Strike HR Strike HR HR Strike Strike HR HR HR IBB HR Strike Strike Strike Final Line: 12 HR, 2 K, 1 IBB
  12. Oh man, at first I thought you meant Dave Roberts again! Weeks for Brian Roberts is kind of tempting, especially if they can throw in a young pitcher as suggested in the article.
  13. Yes. Considering there's like 100-some players in the minors for the Brewers each year... that means we have $500mil devoted to developing minor league players each year. Pretty sure if that was true, we might as well scrap the minor league system and just have a $580 million payroll.
  14. Does ESPN/MLB enforce using the full 5 minutes between picks to allow for media coverage? It's pretty cool having the analysis and stuff, but I kind of miss the amusement of the MLB draft having a whole round being announced in like 2 minutes, haha.
  15. I have this same gripe. It's really annoying when a graphic is shown to illustrate that some player has hit the majority of his homeruns against right handed pitching, but they completely neglect to show the number of at bats he's had against each side of the mound.
  16. Well, I thought it was pretty obvious that Sheets doesn't know how to win games by this point...
  17. Judging third base coaches can be tricky... With less than two outs, if it's questionable, you hold the runner and try to score him while you still have an out to burn. However, with two outs, you have to be pretty aggressive and if runners aren't being thrown out at home, you're probably not being aggressive enough. You don't want to send a dead duck around third, but there's enough that has to go right on throws and catches that the breaking point for maximizing your run production is probably right around being safe 40% of the time on close plays at the plate. Otherwise, with a good hitter coming up, you'll probably have about a 30% chance of him knocking the run in with two outs (albeit there is also a chance he knocks one out and scores you two or more). I kind of just threw those numbers out there, but the gist is that something's wrong if guys aren't being thrown out at home on close plays. Now some of these weren't close and some weren't with two outs, but I had no problem with the Fielder play. Does anyone know if a study has been done to evaluate third base coach performance and what a good success rate is for sending guys home on close plays? I think that could be pretty interesting.
  18. Awesome -- Jenkins just threw out Carlos Lee trying to score from second on a single in the Astros-Phillies game. Hee hee.
  19. Vargas was integral to our spring training success. Money well spent!
  20. Not to bring it up after the fact, but if Yost is going to bat Kendall 9th, why not bat Counsell 9th today? I understand not batting Rivera there because it "takes a certain type of player" to do it, but it seems like Counsell's a similar "type" of player as Kendall in terms of OBP-minded, gritty, leadoff batter mentality.
  21. Haha, I was flipping through channels last night and stopped on HSN for awhile because I saw them selling the Esteban Cadillac guitar. Guitars and cars all night!
  22. 1st game, 5th inning, Billy Hall, Get up, get up, get oughta here, GONE! How'd you like that one folks!
  23. Thanks again for all the insight! I tried out a couple dozen guitars at three different stores this weekend and nearly settled on the Martin DX1 JoeHova pointed out before coming across the Martin 000X1. I was waiting for that guitar that just felt right and found it in the 000X1! It feels and sounds great, and at $450, it was a great deal for a guitar I know I won't regret getting! The only problem now is between the Brewers and playing around on the guitar... how am I supposed to be expected to get any studying done for school!?!?!
  24. Thanks for the replies! JoeHova, that Fender Telecoustic looks pretty sweet! I'll have to try one out. I'll be primarily using it as a straight up acoustic guitar, but it might be nice to have the amp connectivity. Do you know of any downsides of getting an acoustic-electric guitar over a regular acoustic? Is the sound quality diminished at all due to the design differences?
  25. For the past few months I've been teaching myself the guitar on a cheap acoustic I got in middle school. For my birthday, my parents agreed to take me shopping for a new guitar in the $300-400 price range. I know the only way to find a "good guitar for me" is to go to the store and try them out, however, I was wondering if anyone had any pointers? Which brands to avoid due to durability issues? I know to get a solid wood top, but are there certain types of wood to look for/avoid? I'll be playing just for fun and in family/friend situations, is there any real reason to look at acoustic/electric guitars? Is their quality of sound much worse than a regular acoustic when not plugged into an amp? I have smaller hands, are there certain brands that generally have thinner necks that would be easier to play? Anything else to look out for? I've heard some good things about Ibanez (having thinner necks) and the Seagull S6. Any opinions on these? Thanks a bunch! I'm going out shopping this weekend and it would be great to have some guidance going in!
