  1. From Tom Haudricourt's blog: Here's a quick reference for these players and our current projected starters. Three year splits (as a starter) / 2010 CHONE Projections ERA IP SO AVG WHIP vs.L vs.R Age Doug Davis 4.22 542.0 402 .276 1.54 .795 .774 34 4.69 167.0 116 1.56 Jarrod Washburn 4.26 521.1 301 .266 1.34 .596 .805 35 4.63 167.0 98 1.40 Jon Garland 4.37 609.0 297 .285 1.41 .765 .778 30 4.60 186.0 94 1.43 ERA IP SO AVG WHIP vs.L vs.R Age Yovani Gallardo 3.59 310.2 317 .231 1.30 .675 .705 23 3.66 145.0 160 1.29 Randy Wolf 3.94 507.1 416 .250 1.41 .634 .730 33 4.23 164.0 129 1.35 Dave Bush 5.11 477.2 328 .271 1.32 .784 .800 30 4.78 160.0 112 1.38 Manny Parra 5.23 308.0 263 .290 1.68 .708 .821 27 4.81 159.0 129 1.53 Jeff Suppan 4.93 546.0 284 .301 1.57 .865 .817 35 5.43 169.0 86 1.61 With two lefties already in the rotation, I'd prefer Garland of the three, however his OPS splits are pretty similar to Davis'. It's hard to argue that any of the three wouldn't be our third best pitcher and really solidify a currently shaky rotation. Add a Mulder minor league signing and I'd feel pretty good going into the season.
  2. There are two ways of looking at this question and it's causing a lot of the disagreement in this thread. 1.) Will the team that is currently assembled have better results than last year's team did? 2.) Does the currently assembled team project to do better this season than the team we ended up with at the end of last season would have projected to do this season? Both are completely valid questions, but yield different analysis and arguments. If you can't keep them separate, there's going to be a lot of disagreement on this topic. Personally, I think this is still to-be-determined. If we somehow obtain another solid starter, I think the answer to both questions is yes. But until then, it's hard to expect this team to be a whole lot different than last year's team.
  3. I really like how the bullpen is shaping up, but there doesn't seem like there will be room for some of our quality arms on the big league roster. How do you see the bullpen rounding out to start the season? Who do you consider locks? Here's my guess (with CHONE projections): CL Trevor Hoffman (3.45, 1.17, 39 K, 47 IP) RP LaTroy Hawkins (3.60, 1.31, 40 K, 55 IP) RP Todd Coffey (3.91, 1.29, 56 K, 69 IP) RP Mitch Stetter (3.64, 1.31, 41 K, 42 IP) RP Claudio Vargas (3.86, 1.29, 40 K, 49 IP) RP David Riske (4.14, 1.38, 28 K, 37 IP) RP Chuck Lofgren (no CHONE projection available) I like Villanueva and Narveson, but if Riske's ready to go, I don't see Villanueva getting a spot over him with that contract. So hopefully Villy can be included in a trade for some starting pitching. I think Narveson will be sent to AAA to stay stretched out as a starter and first-called up for the rotation when needed. RP Carlos Villanueva (3.86, 1.26, 68 K, 77 IP) RP Chris Narveson (4.18, 1.30, 54 K, 56 IP)
  4. So by this logic, was Suppan REALLY good at keeping us in games? Games allowing less than or equal to... 0 ER: Suppan - 13.3% / Looper - 5.8% 1 ER: Suppan - 30.0% / Looper - 20.6% 2 ER: Suppan - 43.3% / Looper - 35.3% 3 ER: Suppan - 60.0% / Looper - 52.9% 4 ER: Suppan - 73.3% / Looper - 67.6% Looper was even worse than Suppan at keeping the Crew in games, he just got bailed out by the offense a lot last year. By comparison, here are the same rates for Gallardo... 0 ER: 20.0% 1 ER: 33.3% 2 ER: 56.7% 3 ER: 80.0% 4 ER: 83.3% No one should be upset about us replacing Looper. Now let's hope we can somehow delegate Suppan to the bullpen...
  5. Watching the press conference... it is kind of creepy. Edit: Hahahah, Doug just referenced how Wolf looks like Jenkins.
  6. I thought it might be nice to compile all the rumored targets of the Brewers in one location here. Since we're mainly concerned with how the players WILL produce rather than how they HAVE produced, I've included their Bill James' projections and ordered them by ERA: W L ERA WHIP AVG Yovani Gallardo 12 8 3.53 1.30 .230 Dave Bush 6 6 4.29 1.30 .271 Manny Parra 7 9 4.59 1.53 .276 Chris Narveson 4 5 4.73 1.42 .259 Jeff Suppan 7 10 5.09 1.51 .290 Justin Duchscherer 10 6 3.16 1.12 .235 Rich Harden 10 5 3.33 1.23 .219 John Smoltz 3 2 3.42 1.18 .254 Eric Bedard 5 5 3.58 1.28 .239 Javier Vazquez 15 9 3.60 1.20 .253 Josh Johnson 14 9 3.63 1.32 .255 John Lackey 13 10 3.81 1.28 .261 John Maine 9 9 3.86 1.35 .244 Randy Wolf 12 10 3.87 1.29 .253 Joe Blanton 13 11 4.06 1.34 .273 Derek Lowe 12 9 4.06 1.38 .279 Jarrod Washburn 8 8 4.09 1.32 .267 Kevin Correia 11 13 4.23 1.41 .269 Doug Davis 11 12 4.46 1.49 .267 Edwin Jackson 10 14 4.75 1.50 .274 [Bill James projection not available] Chris Capuano, John Halama, Mark Mulder, Ben Sheets One thing is clear, there are A LOT of options to upgrade our rotation.
  7. I would take Damien Miller's production as a Brewer in a second out of Zaun if we sign him. Signing Zaun gives us stability in case Lucroy/Salome aren't ready and Kottaras/Rivera aren't productive in a larger role. Going into the season with any combo of Lucroy/Salome/Kottaras/Rivera behind the plate leaves me a bit uneasy and Zaun is an improvement over Kendall. I'd welcome any reasonably priced signing of Zaun.
  8. Mine may be more so a list of my "favorite" movies of the decade rather than the "best": 1. Donnie Darko 2. (500) Days of Summer 3. The 40 Year Old Virgin 4. Juno 5. The Wrestler 6. Dark Knight 7. Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 8. Sean of the Dead 9. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan 10. Napoleon Dynamite
  9. I love it when the fans rush the court to celebrate with the players, so I had no problem with it. But it does make me chuckle to think what it would look like if the Brewers beat the Yankees in a regular season game and the fans rushed the field, haha.
  10. I wouldn't mind Randy Wolf as one of our two new pitchers, but I think I'd rather take a shorter term risk on a Sheets/Bedard/Harden-type and remain financially flexible after this season. Either way I really hope we can trade for another young pitcher to go along with whomever we obtain (ala Jackson, Johnson, etc.).
  11. I'm not opposed to signing Zaun for $2mil or less. In the last five seasons he hasn't had an OPS below .700 or an OBP below .340, he has a little pop in his bat and he's had WARs of 1.8, 1.2 and 1.8 the past three seasons. Definitely an upgrade from Kendall at $5mil and would provide some stability in case none of our young catchers are effective and at $2mil he isn't being paid enough to block any of them if someone does emerge. It would definitely make me feel "safer" about the catching position going into next season.
  12. What would people think of signing Jack Cust if he's non-tendered to free up Corey Hart as trade bait? MLBTradeRumors.com reports this from Buster Olney: How bad is he defensively? He played 51 games in rightfield last year. But he'd be a nice left-handed bat to put in the lineup if you can stomach the strikeouts: 2007-09 Averages: .241/.378/.462/.840 - 463 AB, 75 R, 28 HR, 76 RBI, 103 BB, 182 K
  13. I would take that deal in a second. Frees up payroll space and adds a low-cost-high-reward pitcher to the staff. Doesn't Morrow seem like the exact type of pitcher that would flourish under Peterson's tutelage?
  14. It might be worth a call to check. Wrigley Field wouldn't serve me alcohol until I got an ID post-turning 21... even though my ID explicitly said I was under 21 until [insert date before alcohol purchase]. Then again, it was Wrigley Field...
  15. I'm visiting a friend in Baltimore for a week next month and was wondering if anyone's been there and have any must-see attractions. She works at the National Aquarium, so I'm already seeing that for sure and spending time in the Inner Harbor. She just moved there from Wisconsin a couple months ago as well, so any lesser known places to checkout would be much appreciated! Thanks!
  16. I usually make it to one Brewer-Cub game at Wrigley each year and I have to agree with this as well. The Cub fans at Wrigley on average are much friendlier than the average Cub fan that makes its lowly way up to Miller Park. I think a lot come up just to stir up trouble and it doesn't help that they don't know how to tailgate without getting trashed.
  17. I didn't read it that way. I think he means that some horrible fielders play in leftfield and Braun grades out as a below average even with them pulling the average down. I think in time Braun will be more than acceptable as a corner outfielder, I think he's very Jenkins-like there, but he's still learning.
  18. I'm working on a little project that I want a DVD case that can hold 4 disks for and I was wondering if anyone knows of a local store in the Madison area that would sell them? I know I can order them online, but I'd like them by this weekend and don't want to pay $15 in shipping to get them here in time. Something like this is what I'm looking for: http://www.cheapmediasupplies.com/USERIMAGES/4_WAY_DVD_CASE.JPG Thanks for any help!
  19. I agree, it's hard to watch how the guy has performed this year and think he's not legit, but we've really only been privy to a couple hundred at-bats and they happen to be some of his most impressive at-bats as a professional. I have a feeling if he's still around this time next year, especially if he's a starter, people will be complaining that we didn't trade him while his value was high. That said, we don't have to trade him this offseason and I'd still love him off the bench, but if we can get something valuable for him or include him in a package for an impact player, this offseason will be a good time to move him. Reminds me a lot of the Scott Podsednik situation, although Pods did get a lot more playing time to prove himself before he was moved for El Caballo.
  20. I would love Cam back on a discount. I think he's one of the most under-appreciated players in the league. I'd also love to bring back Lopez and have him and Weeks getting on base in front of the big boys all year. Keep Cam in center and Rickie at 2nd, move Lopez to 3rd, Gamel to left and Braun to right. It's a lot of shifting, but I think it puts everyone in their proper places. Then trade Hardy and Hart for some pitching. Lopez, Weeks, Braun, Fielder, Cameron, Gamel, Salome, Escobar to start off the year would be very nice.
  21. Great minds think alike brewcrew! I just wandered back to this thread to ask the exact same thing! I've always thought it would be hard to eat enough during each meal 6-7 times a day to feel full/content without overeating, as when I start snacking on something, it's hard to stop... So I'm also curious with what kind of meals and timing people pull this off.
  22. I went through these videos off and on with my brother for a couple months, here are my thoughts: - The videos are intense, but have a lot of variety to keep it interesting, and I personally found Tony to be hilarious and kept things fun - If you stick to the plan and do these videos everyday and do everything on them, you will lose a ton of body fat and be incredibly ripped - That said, it really is an intense workout. My brother and I never made it through a full video without skipping certain exercises and we found it very difficult to actually do them more than 3-4 days in a row I recently moved further away from my brother and don't really have the room to do these videos in my apartment, so I joined an Anytime Fitness (which I really like so far) and just alternate upper body and lower body routines each day with half an hour of cardio to finish each routine. But I think I'd like to get out to my brother's place and do the p90x routines every once in awhile to keep it mixed up. They're really a great workout and especially fun to do with someone so you can laugh at how pathetically exhausted and weak you each feel throughout it, lol.
  23. In no particular order: 1. The Joker - The Dark Knight 2. Dexter Morgan - Dexter (Not sure if I would really consider him a villain though...) 3. Hannibal Lector - Silence of the Lambs 4. Toby - The Office (At least according to Michael, lol) 5. T-1000 - T2 6. The Velociraptors - Jurassic Park 7. Mr. Burns - The Simpsons 8. Dark Helmet - Spaceballs 9. Kim Jong Il - Team America 10. Satan - South Park
  24. Nice pickup. I highly doubt anything significant was given up for him. I think it's a little too late and the Brewers are a little too shaky to risk making a big splash move that could gamble away our future to make a serious run this year, but it's nice to see Doug still making minor improvements to stay in the race.
